My Xbox disc drive took a jump to the shitter quite some time ago and I'm finally fed up with it. (It doesn't read discs any longer, and if by some miracle it does, I get an "Unreadable Disc" error.)
I have an Xbox 360 Elite with the malfunctioning disc drive and my friend has a launch X360 with a functioning one. If I swap the disc drives will the console remain safe to play on Xbox Live?

But only do that if your warranty has expired as it will void your warranty like the above poster wrote. Sending it for repairs is much easier.
