Ok so im getting a new laptop and I have the option of the getting the:
1GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7470M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
OR
2GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
Could someone tell me how the performance would differ between these two cards. I plan to play minecraft (obviously) but also plan to use things like Fraps to record minecraft, ill be doing some video editing, watch HD video and I want to be able to play fallout new vegas and skyrim on a decent FPS without setting graphics to low.
For the things i want to do which would be a better choice? I guess what im saying is for the things i want to do, do i need the 2gb one? (Keeping in mind the 2gb is $75 more)
If you need more info like the laptop specs to answer my question i can post that to.
The 7690 is a better choice at first glance, but I would have to look up the models to check everything on them. To be honest if you have an NVIDIA option get it instead.
From experience, I can tell you that you'll need that extra Gigabyte for running Skyrim. 2GB is is.
Memory is like money, all purpose. And the more you have, the better quality the things you use it on.
well yeah i know but would the 2gb allow me to render higher quality graphics or would it simply be faster?
The difference as far as filming would go. You will render things slightly faster in sony vegas and such, but you won't really notice a difference otherwise.

im only offered those and the 7690 is $75 more which makes the laptop go above my budget but im willing to put in a little more money if my performance will be changed reasonably drastically

These are mobile cards, extra memory for graphics cards is only needed when your running AA/AF as high as can be or a triple monitor setup, which is obviously not an option with a laptop

After reading the specifications on both cards. If you want to save 75 dollars you could, but there will be a slight difference in higher end games. In minecraft you will most likely not see any change until you are recording. Knowing the CPU, and HDD would help a bit as well as how much RAM you currently have.

Looks like it would offer about 10-15 fps on everything over the other one, so it's up to you if you think it is worth it
No. You will not see a drastic difference. The core clock and memory clock on them are both almost identical. VRAM is not as important as everyone thinks.

The CPU is a: 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz (Quad Core)
Hard Drive is: 750GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

Well said, VRAM is really not needed unless your trying to run 3+ monitors at max graphics

And comes with 8gb of ddr3 system memory
Honestly with the laptop as is I would save the 75 dollars. You won't notice much of a difference about like said about 10-15 fps difference on High-Ultra settings in newer games. That being said they are both mid range cards. Both will run Minecraft as smooth as possible for recording at 30 or 60 fps.

i dont plan to record fallout so would they be able to run New Vegas on decent or good settings?

With the clocks I saw on the 7470 you should be able to run New Vegas on max settings. Possibly needing to drop one or two view distances down a little bit, but you shouldn't have any issues.

ok thats sound great :biggrin.gif: does the amount of video ram i have affect me watching HD videos or even video editing?

Watching video, no. When editing video you would shave maybe one minute off rendering times, but to be honest one minute per render is not worth 75 dollars in my opinion.

ok thats sounds fine also... besides what i have listed is there anything else video ram effects?
