In a few months, I'm going to build my own computer. I'm planning to run the Minecraft server on it 24/7, and it should be able to run the Minecraft client as well.
Now, I have three options:
-Intel i5 2500K (3,3 MHz x4)
-AMD Phenom II 1100T (3,3 MHz x6)
-AMD Phenom II 980 (3,7 MHz x4)
All three processors have an advantage, but I have no idea which one will outperform the others.
The Intel i5 is, well, Intel. According to benchmarks and a lot of people, Intel is (slightly) better than AMD.
The Phenom II x6 has 2 extra cores. I don't know if Minecraft uses 2 cores, or just 1, but if it does use 2 cores, the extra cores of this processor may be useful for dividing the background programs, the server, and the client over those 6 cores.
The Phenom II x4 has a higher clock speed. Theoretically, it should do stuff faster than the i5. Theoretically.
So, if anybody would be able to help me with this decision, that would be awesome.
What about the non-K version of the intel processor?
Or are you going to overclock it or something?
Forgot to say that. Overclocking is a possibility. As long as it can be done with air cooling, and without making my PC sound like an airplane taking off. Also, the K version is just €5 more.
I got a phenomII 965 x4, running @3.4Ghz, and it works well. I can run the game, two servers, a web browser, a skype call, and a teamspeak server; while only using ~85% CPU. :cool.gif:
Intel i7 with 16-23 gb of ram all allocated to minecraft. Use nvidia
You're clearly just spouting out names of parts you know, MC won't benefit from 26GB of ram when it's running a server off of a residential internet connection.

Which i7? There are x4 and x6 versions.. Also, 16GB of RAM sounds like heavy overkill. Minecraft client runs fine with 500mb. The server never went over 2 GB for me.
Really any decent modern hardware will run what you need no problem. With a server it depends on your internet connection. I run my server on an i5-750 quadcore(2.66Ghz) on the older 1156 socket. I gave it about 2 out of 8Gb of ram to play with. I also host my own media server on that computer. And a team speak sever when the need arises. So any of those CPU's should be fine.
Edit: I just use a gtx 520 for the graphics card as the mobo doesn't have on board video
@CentrallyProcessed: It's going to be a normal computer, used for playing Minecraft, running the server, internet browsing, casual gaming, that sort of stuff.
@DarthJonny: The only thing I know is that a Core 2 Duo can't handle the server and client at the same time. If any modern processor can, then that's great.
i5-2500k all the way. Cycle for cycle it is faster. It is also a quad-core. The i7 really only just adds hyper-threading to the quad core, which is unnecessary in most applications. Phenoms are okay for super budget builds, but and i5 will outperform it.

Even if it did, the 2500k would probably be better.
I meant the runtime environment with the server software running.
