Hi! I need to know what the absolute best AM2 (not AM2+) processor is! I have an old computer given to me by a friend, but the processor doesn't work. The board only takes AM2 processors! I want to turn it into a server (TeamSpeak or a small Minecraft server or something...).
So...what's the best processor I could get for this thing? I've tried searching NewEgg for some AM2 processors but to no results...all I get are AM3 processors.

You can use AM3 processors on AM2 boards, all you have to do is update the bios. I am not the best with server stuff, so ask someone else.
Oh, but the best processor would be the phenom II x6 1100T (I think).
Sorry guys, should have specified: It's an old desktop that I'm going to use as a small server. I can't update the BIOS because I can't power on the machine because the processor does not work.
I need specifically an AM2 processor. It seems like since they were phased out for AM2+, which don't seem to work in this board, it's hard to find a processor that works. I have an Athlon X2 7850 lying around, and the computer won't even POST with that in.
The site Pacific Geek (I never have ordered from them so I can't say anything on quality, support, or otherwise) has older parts like a few AM2 processors.
Also the site Geeks.com has one AM2 and plenty of AM2+ (which I've heard work in some motherboards even without upgrades to the BIOS but with limited power. Check your motherboard and the CPU to see it it can happen.)

Personal Computers are like Air Conditioning Units. They don't work when you run them with Windows. (I would know. I own three of each.)
Get an AM3 motherboard based on 880G chipset (do NOT get an MSI) and get an X6 1055T. If you want to reuse your DDR2 memory get a 790X-based AM2+ board. Gigabyte if possible (They make the best bang for the buck 790X AM2+ board out there)
True AM2 processors aren't powerful enough to run a SMP server with 10-12 players on it.
I have an Opteron 1214 socket AM2 clocked at 2.95GHz (can't get it stable any higher on current cooling), under Win server 2008 Enterprise x64 and with a couple of players it has a CPU load of 85-90% on both cores.
If you want to make something else that's not as demanding as an SMP server (even if vanilla), check the Athlon X2 4400+ 65nm version.
AM2 socket, relatively cheap (on eBay they're around $45) and they run pretty cool. If you board supports it, it can be overclocked up to 3.1GHz on a cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212+.
If you want the absolute maximum and don't wanna overclock, an X2 6400+ 65nm version is your best choice.
See, the SMP server would be a vanilla one, and even then, would only be for about four or five other people plus me, and it would only be to get the server off of my personal desktop. So, upgrading this just to have a nice AM3 processor would be great, but it's not worth it right now.

Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.
If it's for a server then I assume it would be these.

Wrong socket.

Those are specifically for server motherboards that you have to purchase, not just typical motherboards that would be in an everyday use PC.

Here is a link to one of them. PacificGeek

I'll check out that 6400+ though! Thanks!
