But the AVI file size limit thing is not as straightforward as I thought...
For AVI 1.0 the limit is about 2GB. I think Camstudio uses this but I might remember it wrong. I'll check it later...
Some sources state that it's about 4GB (3.9GB?) but this might be wrong. With OpenDML extension the max AVI file size is much larger but Fraps might split the files because the FAT32 file system has maximum file size of about 4GB. Nowadays most (Windows) machines use NTFS so this is no longer a problem.
About MS Expression Encoder: It works but the videos have more lag than those recorded with Camstudio+Huffyuv. The worst thing is that the Expression editor software is very laggy and horrible to use. The Microsoft screen capture codec is also incompatible with many other editing software. It might work better on a faster computer though, my computer isn't especially powerful.
I use Camtasia 7 and it works great. The finished products are usually under 50 MB in 320p, but if you want 1080p it's gonna be around 100 MB. The raw .camrec files are over 5 GB so make sure that once you have your finished product that you delete the .camrec files. I wub Camtasia 7.

Go get Fraps. It's free (I think for a while), but it would be plenty enough for your purpose.

I would never recommend Hypercam to anyone. When I tested it a long time ago the video quality was bad and there was a watermark in the video. Camstudio has reasonable performance when properly configured, I think it's usually the best free recorder available. Fraps is better for game recording and it isn't very expensive, only 37$.
there is also a free version of Fraps (for a temporary period, I think), and I've got it.
