Use it at home my workstation at work and really any chance I get. I like the interface much better then Win7, it is still a little poor on tablets and hopeing windows on tablets gets improved a bit with Win10. Though WinRT tablets are very nice i have a bunch sitting above my desk that we loan out to teachers going to conferences and other places.
I don't really have a problem with 8.1. I went from 7 to 8.1 because I got a new computer. I would recommend 8.1, but its not really designed for desktops.
Really what about it is not designed for desktops, keyboard shortcuts still work mouse still works. If it is because the start screen has buttons instead of 20 tab menus I will ask you what is quicker to search through not to mention program files tendency to sometimes label things by application or company that owns it.
Use it on my pc for the reason of games. I would fully switch to linux within a heartbeat but unfortunate it doesn't have that wider support for those applications.
8.1 is a really nice and most important much faster os over windows 7. Once you figure out how everything works At first glance it's confusing and unstructured for productivity thats why I use linux for productivity and not 8.1. So I'd pick 8.1 over 7 anytime. But still linux > windows.
Really just the Linux Kernel nothing else? Funny you bring up a Linux Distro considering every major one runs an UI similar to Win8, Unity Gnome3. KDE is even moving to a interface based more around searching under a menu then a bunch of tabs for your applications. I like Win8 because it brought the UI closer to the Linux DE I use often.
Personally, I use Ubuntu, as it has everything I honestly need, and more and more games are being added. (For example, Shadow of Mordor, some Batman games, Grid autosport, Payday, etc. have been announced by Feral Interactive.) Gets a bit frustrating at times, but all in all not bad. It also has decent recorders and editing tools out now to allow to me to record good-quality videos. I just hope Vulkan will be an improvement from OpenGL.
Since this thread is about Windows 8/8.1, I've never used them, but I have used XP and 7, and I absolutely hate the layout and it was always quite buggy. (Can't say Linux isn't, as it is.) 8/8.1 don't look bad though to be honest.

Same here. Windows has good games support, but linux is still the best in general. I havent used win8 personally, but after a little experience with win10, its nice and a good upgrade from win7, but that start menu... ugh. Also, everything seems to be more and more clicks away, or everything is a massive, screen consuming pane that takes a few seconds to load. Like the wifi pane. Those little dots circling each other on a single colour background seems to be what windows has become....

Haven't thought that much someone would understand linux here as most users are on windows. Ofc I use an ui. Plasma 5 kde beta with arch as main distro. Kernel 3.19.
Yeah it will be free for everyone in the first year who have bought 7 or 8/8.1 so we can all expirience the same bugs this year. Didn't find windows slow as ssd's should be affordable for everyone now. Still windows keeps on crashing, have its issues with updates and probably they will fight with security flaws forever. With linux I've something that gives me zero fuss, is suitable for working, doesn't distract me with its blinking/flashing tiles <.< and I can customize it to whatever I want. Means tools for just work which I have on the desktop or penetration tool which I have on a netbook. Because there they make more sense being on a portable device.
I quite agree with this. Only problems I've really had are drivers.
So you mean gpu drivers? Have used fglrx updates from proprietary source. Means just amd catalyst from the amd repos. Worked off the bat. Only problem I had where wifi drivers so used ndiswrapper and and ndiswrapper common. Allows to use windows wifi drivers under linux. Quiet handy package.
Yep I do. For some odd reason the original ones from Nvidia would freeze whenever installing them and cause my monitor to go black. Found an alternative driver code somewhere and it works like a charm now.

Would have been fixed by reconfiguring x-server and mesa but you probably refering to ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates which is an alternate driversource for nvidia
Tried reconfiguring but it would just simply crash and black screen then too..Anyways, I don't know exactly what it was, but probably what you're talking about.

I'd definitely pick Windows 8 over Windows 7 but I like Windows 10 the best <3
Even though it can be annoying at times when trying to work on school work when bug after bug stops me from doing it. ESPECIALLY when my teachers think I'm lying about there even being a Windows 10 xP
When I built my computer late 2012. Windows 8 was just out. But the bad reviews were spewing out from the internet. So I went with Windows 7. I am not upgrading to Windows 8 now because Microsoft are giving Windows 7 users a free upgrade

Yeah! I know, I am upgrading my laptop (Which is running Win 8.1) to Windows 10 when it comes out! I so Can barely wait till Summer!
Concerning the GUI, I much prefer Windows 7. So with that in mind, I voted "hate." Don't get me wrong; it's very usable (at least once I set it up more to my liking). It's just excessively and unnecessarily ugly. Even the newer Windows icon/key looks bad. I'm also not particularly fond of the Charms menu. I prefer my old, boring, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing pop-up branch menus, windows, and menu bars. I don't even use desktop icons on both Windows 7 and 8.1, preferring pop-up Taskbar menus instead for things like program shortcuts, Computer/This PC, and links.
Someone earlier mentioned using Linux. I frequently use Debian with a KDE desktop interface. If GNU/Linux (specifically Debian) had the same hardware/driver and software compatibility and support, I would have little use for Windows.

Yes you will, As long as you upgrade it within the first year of its release. Read this to see full details. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/about?ocid=WIN10_0_WOL_Hero_Home_Windows-10_Null_01
