Ok, i've got a minecraft server running on an old Tsunami Thunder motherboard, it runs good and everything but one thing has always been on my mind. it has 2 built on LAN ports and i've always wondered if it's possible to daisy chain it so I can connect another computer to the 2nd LAN port for internet. i've read it's possible with Ubuntu and crossover cables but a bit of explanation wouldn't hurt.
and my server is running ubuntu server (I think version 13.04).
This is about 4 button clicks in windows and you probably don't need crossover cables auto-midix is in basically all network adapters now.
This can be done with knowledge of iptables with your version of Ubuntu. 14.04 has an update and a way to do this through the GUI though this could have been back ported.
If you are still on 13.04 you should upgrade to 14.04 support for 13.04 has been dropped if you want long term support stay on LTS.
I myself was curious about it due to the fact my network switch only has 8 ports and almost every one of them is taken up. one problem with the GUI, it's server version, no GUI just dos prompts so to speak, and I was curious if it would actually work and it would be good to be bale to utilize the 2nd port on the board.

Buy a bigger switch is my recommendation, then you need to do it by terminal or start up a GUI. Use GUI tools when they work better and use CLI when it works better. Enable a GUI you can leave it disabled by default on boot, you can start it up and do the configuration if they are experienced just use the GUI.
If you are going to then bring up some argument about a GUI wasting ram or some other line. I have never seen a windows admin start with the GUI off and leave it off on a server. Most either leave the GUI on or disable it after configurations are done. So why is it so many Linux users have this taboo about just having a GUI installed when it is so easy to turn off and on. Unless you are in some super restrictive environment just use a GUI when it works better.
i'm not trying to be an idiot, i'm just not too familiar with ubuntu, i'm more of a windows guy, anyway, is it more preferable to run the desktop version of ubuntu then or is there a GUI that can be installed afterwards in the server version, or am I completely misunderstanding this?

Never called or implied you were, you are inexperienced with Ubuntu(or Linux in general) a lack of knowledge on a topic does not make one stupid.
I had incorrectly assumed that because you were running it you had knowledge of it so I am not trying to insult your knowledge just trying to make sure you understand it now.
The server edition of Ubuntu is a very basic install because they know a person setting up a server is going to install and only want the specific services and applications installed. You would probably be fine just running the desktop version I doubt you care to much about the extra resource consumption. However I am going to walk you through some stuff if you want to remain on the server version. This will be a good learning opportunity for you.
I do recommend you actually educate yourself if you plan on hosting and using Ubuntu.
First I want to get you on 14.04 or make sure you are running it.
In the command line enter
lsb_release -a
That should tell you the version you are running if it is anything but 14.04 you should upgrade. This could take some time and will bring the server down for a restart.
sudo do-release-upgrade
That should bring you to the newest Ubuntu version, next we will install x11, compiz, and Unity.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
If it asks if it can install anything just accept it, if it asks about lightdm or GDM pick lightdm.
After that finishes and you don't get brought to an GUI interface by default enter startx will start the GUI.
While slightly older there is the Ubuntu manual project that provides a more written guide rather then just a wiki. https://ubuntu-manual.org/downloads
I did lsb_release -a and it's 12.04, I didn't think it was that version. and I tried the update but it said no new release available. i'm probly going to have to manually update it I think.

You are fine with 12.04 it is still getting updates, as it is a LTS release and intended for people who want stability and a system that is getting security updates, but not updates that might break things.
looks like i'll have to manually reinstall it all, it went to desktop then I selected updates, then it restarted and it's errors galore. I DO thank you for all the help and i'm not mad about the errors and lockup, it's life. i'll PM you to let you know how things are going with it.

For that to break things I would guess there was some other issues, what do you mean it went to desktop and you selected updates?
I suggest you just use the desktop version for learning especially having the GUI is going to help you.

Here they also talk about the server GUI that I just walked you through.
