Really wasn't sure where to post this since the actual Looking For Group subforum is not for java edition. I'm trying to get back into modded minecraft, but I don't really know where to go to find people to play with. I don't really want to join a server as all the mods are predetermined by the owners and generally have a ton of options turned off for the sake of security, and plus (in my experience) you're pretty much treated as a nobody or a number unless you already know people on the server. I have the ability to host a server myself if I have to. I dunno... I'm just looking for people to play with casually, but with a lot of mods. I am aware that not everyone has a machine that can handle a lot of mods and this cuts my options down by a lot, but still.
Oh, and if there's another place I can post this, please let me know.
I never know how to answer this question either. Though I have mostly joined servers as a Youtuber in recent years and hanging out with the creators of Datapacks/Mods after helping them out with some things so it's not the same thing as years ago where I was on servers with a friend.
But yeah looking at threads or finding a server is the way to go if you don't have/want to make a server yourself. I agree the restrictions can be annoying sometimes though. That's why I say maybe just go with LAN if possible or a generic server if possible. Or find a good modpack with a good mix of types you haven't tried/favourites and see what you get out of it. And yes having different hardware can be a factor if they can only run so many while others can run a 100 mods, and if they are even familiar with the mods also can be a challenge.
I haven't had many moments where joining up with someone one on one has lasted very long but I guess that could be worth a go if you can make it last.
For me, I find it kind of difficult at least these days as I look for different mods all the time to use compared to just using the most popular favourites that make up 90% of modpacks and may or may not be skyblock, have recipe changes or have very few differences. I get this whenever I've reviewed or made my own modpack and see the differences and never find a modpack I want to play because they all end up so similar.

I replied to that thread but I kinda doubt anything will come of it. I don't have faith in mass listing threads like that. I gave up trying to do youtube a long time ago so that doesn't really interest me, sorry. I just want to enjoy the game again. I used to do LAN via tunngle, but apparently that's gone now so oh well. Unless there's a modern alternative to this, I will just set up a legitimate server. Whatever is easiest. Tbh skyblock got boring for me so I all I ever do is build now. My current modpack has around 240 different mods, but it needs to be gone through and updated since I stopped playing several months ago. The majority of mods I use I have for building purposes, even if the mod isn't strictly for that.

There is the looking for people to play with thread here: https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/2485318-need-a-friend-to-play-minecraft-with-click-here for Java Edition, it can be hard to find though sometimes.
