I currently have Minecraft version 1.17.1 and I want to install mods on it, but I don't know what I need to be able to do that. I have read that I need Forge but do not know what version of Forge I need or if there is a version for the new version of Minecraft. Any help would be appreciated.
1.17/1.17.1 only supports Fabric right now. Forge's 1.17 development is still a work in progress. Encase you didn't know there is two modloaders. Always look at mods by the names/fabric icon. Forge and Fabric mods are not compatible so you have to choice between them or use both separately. They both take 1 minute to install you just need the right steps to set them up
Watch some Youtube tutorials if need be to help you know where to get the installer for that modloader, get mods from Curseforge as they are safe, (some websites are dodgey and can have malware/viruses in the files or sell the files from Mod Creators. Curseforge has files posted by the Mod Creators themselves), can tell you where the mods folder/.minecraft folder is and to use the installed profile the Fabric/Forge installer applies once installed and visible to access in the launcher.
You will need Java 16 also for 1.17/1.17.1 for Minecraft and Fabric but Java 8 will do for 1.16.5 and below. Tutorials should cover that and link to how to get it.
Like Majestyc2k1 said Curseforge's launcher or MultiMC are good options and made installing mods/modloaders easier and also work better than Mojang's launcher for mods. They are safe third party launchers.

Forge for MC 1.17 isn't out yet, so you'll need to wait.
Good news, you can play other versions of modded MC (1.16, 1.12, etc.).
The easiest way is to use a app like CurseForge or MultiMC. These apps make it very easy to create Profiles, install Forge and mods.
