Some people prefer playing Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 to the more recent versions. For those players, I've decided to put up this convenient little archive of mods that offer better performance, bug fixes and other miscellaneous little add-ons.
At the moment, none of these mods require use of ModLoader or any other extensions to work. Just delete the META-INF folder.
This mod hardly needs any introduction. Adds support for HD textures and a lot of options for better looks and performance. Doubling the FPS is common.
OptiTick is a quick optimization of one critical part of the World.tick method on the client.
In short, this avoids creating Integer and ChunkCoordIntPair objects where they were most common. This helps keep memory usage down and saves a lot of CPU cycles.
In greater detail, this uses a subset of the "fastutil" Java library to avoid object creation and get a good speed improvement. It replaces HashMap<integer, object> with Int2ObjectOpenHashMap and HashSet with IntOpenHashSet.
You should NOT see an FPS improvement. You will see your memory increase slower and you will see less GC "thrashing" which massively improves playability on slower machines. Fast CPUs and JDK7 reduces the visibility of the problems this mod fixes.
Normally custom sounds in versions of Minecraft before resource packs are impossible because Minecraft automatically downloads and overwrites default sound assets upon startup. This mod prevents that from happening.
Changes Minecraft's default 8-bit depth buffer to a 32-bit one. Fixes z-fighting issues that occur on some graphics cards.
Below are some screenshots of the issues Minecraft was giving me on my Radeon R9 270X. If you're experiencing similiar issues on your machine, this mod is for you!
Does exactly what it says on the tin: it rids Minecraft of that incessant little "Achievement Get!" popup once and for all!
Please note: this mod doesn't get rid of achievements completely. You can still hunt for achievements if you wish, this just gets rid of the notification.
This is a very simple mod that removes all tall grass and dead shrubs from the world. It also brings back the ability to harvest seeds from grass blocks with a hoe.
This mod prevents tall grass being generated in new worlds. However, worlds with pre-existing tallgrass will have to wait for chunks to update before all tall grass is removed.

edit - For some reason I was having a lot of trouble modding beta 1.7.3 in the new launcher. Whenever I tried the manual way of copying the jar file and editing the json and such, it would always redownload the jar and delete my mods. The way I got it to work was by finding any existing jar/json file, such as the "Skin fix" one in this thread, and choosing that in the profile. It didn't redownload it then.
With that said, I would really love that depth buffer fix, but it crashes my game every time I try it. I specifically followed the folders and made sure I was just replacing the Minecraft.class file, and I don't have any other mods that change that, but it still crashes the game. I searched in Google and I can't find much about this outside of this thread. Any ideas? Is anyone else able to use this successfully?
Here's what I get when it crashes:

Seems Minecraft has trouble finding a modified Minecraft.class, which is what my depth buffer fix uses. Hence the "ClassNotFoundException".
The only solution I have at the moment is to copy your b1.7.3.jar, paste it to your "\.minecraft\bin\" folder, rename it to "minecraft.jar", put the depth buffer fix in it and use Magic Launcher to launch Minecraft in a "classic" environment. This will run the modified minecraft.jar without overwriting it.
I'm sure there is a more sophisticated fix to this, but my unfortunately my Java skills are limited. Sorry for the headache.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I tried what you said, although admittingly I'm not too familiar with this magic launcher. It seems to want to crash every time I start it with the following message:
*** MagicMinecraftLauncher 1.3.2 ***
LCP: ;bin/jinput.jar;bin/lwjgl.jar;bin/lwjgl_util.jar;C:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar

Here's what I did:
- For safety, renamed default .minecraft folder to something else (using command prompt, which is a pain), and left a mostly empty .minecraft folder with only the files for beta 1.7.3
- Tried starting with both the modified jar with the fix, and the vanilla jar downloaded from the internet, both inside the bin folder as minecraft.jar
Both instances I get that message. Does the magic launcher need more files than what the default launcher downloads for the old versions? I understand in the default launcher, which I set up profiles with different directories, the file structure is different than what it originally was when beta came out. Not sure if the Magic Launcher is expecting there to be more files there and they don't exist.
I am shocked how hard it is to mod a simple file, and I'm looking into other launchers, but most seem to be discontinued in favor of the current default launcher (which doesn't work! :(). I appreciate all of your help. I did find another mod that fixes the depth buffer, but I got the exact same crash when using that. I contacted the author of that to see if he could provide any help, still waiting on a reply.
I included a picture showing what I'm getting, and my file structure.

in lwjgl-2.9.3.zip, there is a folder called "jar". Copy the "lwjgl", "lwjgl_util" and "jinput" ,jars and put them in your bin folder. It should look like this:
Then, in lwjgl-2.9.3.zip again, there's a folder called "native". Copy the "windows" folder from that, paste it to your bin folder and rename it to "natives". It should have all this stuff in it:
Jeez, what a lot of mess for such a simple mod. I'm gonna try and see if there's a work-around for not finding the Minecraft.class so we don't have to do this stupid classic environment crap.

Thanks so much for the tip, it works perfectly now! I've attached pictures to show just how atrocious the graphics were before, and how much better they look now with the fix applied . (Also, I can now actually visit a snow biome without being disgusted, especially with how it showed the borders of chunks.)
I will say that I do recognize those files... when you start a game in a beta version with the default launcher, those files appear in the "versions" folder, I believe. However, they disappear when you close the Minecraft client. Apparently that's why beta versions can't be played offline, cause it literally downloads those every time :/. What an inefficient way of porting the old versions to the new launcher.
Also, thanks for your suggestion with the magic launcher. I think I will be using it for playing non-stock versions from now on, because it seems to actually handle different directories properly. With the default launcher, 1 in 2 times it will still pick the default Minecraft directory, which immediately erases my settings on 1.8.9, and also poses the risk of me clicking to start a world and erasing it due to version incompatibility.

I have made a mod for 1.7.3 that makes tools effective against blocks it originally wasn't effective against, even though it should have been. Specifically, I made pickaxes effective against brick, redstone ore, furnaces, cobblestone stairs. Axes are effective against wooden stairs, fences, doors, and crafting tables. That is all I changed. You can download it here.
Here are some mods I've made or otherwise recompiled from various sources around the net. These are for Beta 1.7.3 only (I have no interest modding other versions at the moment).
Ravines
With this mod, I backported ravine code from Beta 1.8.1 into Beta 1.7.3. They spawn just like in newer versions of Minecraft, on the surface or all the way down to lava level. There can even be multiple ravines running into eachother. I'm sure you're familiar with how they work at this point. If you use the 404 seed, you'll likely find one.
This mod doesn't change any other terrain generation. Caves and dungeon spawns should be the same, except for the added ravines, of course.
Improved Terrain + Ravines
This mod does three things:
Firstly, it adds ravines to the underground cave systems, as seen in the above mod.
Secondly, it fixes several bugs/artifacts in the overworld terrain generator. Beaches and biome edges no longer get "cut off" in weird ways, and gravel areas have a proper surface layer. This thread goes into way more detail about it than I ever could.
Finally, it fixes a bug in cave generation where flat walls would spawn at chunk borders, effectively "cutting off" caves. In Beta 1.8, this was fixed, so I simply backported the fixed code to Beta 1.7.3. You can read more about this bug in [MC-7196]. Nether still has this bug because I'm too lazy to fix it there, and the Nether didn't have this fix in Beta 1.8 anyway.
Do not expect seeds to be 100% accurate with this mod installed. Cave entrances and tunnels may be altered and dungeon spawns completely different as a result. Some areas may be sandy instead of grassy, with slightly different height levels and block patterns. Fortunately, biome regions stay the same, as well as the location of cave systems (even though the tunnels may be different).
If you want to keep caves and dungeons the same, don't use sq.class from this mod.
In Beta 1.5 the Minecart booster glitch was severely nerfed, with Notch encouraging players to use Powered Rails instead. This mod simply restores the old glitch back to its full glory. Powered Rails can still be used if desired.
Reverts "Severely nerfed fire so it spread slower, and doesn't spread infinitely" from Beta 1.6. Fires spread infinitely and at a much faster rate, just like Alpha / early Beta.
Left: Without the mod, water currents won't cooperate. Right: With the mod, it's a lot easier to create artificial ponds and lakes.
Old Beta Texture Pack
A nostalgic texture pack I made that brings the old cobblestone and brick textures back, along with the purple "Mojang Specifications" logo.

Thank you so much for the Depth Buffer Fix mod! I have that exact graphical issue on my RX 480. However, the game doesn't launch when I click play after installing the mod (and replacing SHA1 hashes and whatnot)... Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks so much for the Depth Buffer fix .. I've been trying to find a fix ever since I built my new computer last spring. I have a Radeon R9 280x card, and the glitchy clouds were bugging me to no end.
Are you trying to load the depth buffer fix through magic launcher? Because that doesn't work. You have to set up beta 1.7.3 as a classic environment and put the mod directly in the minecraft.jar, like how I showed Mincegamer.
Also, I put a mirror for the skin fix in the OP. Just thought I'd let everyone know.
I suppose this is the best place to ask, does anybody have the baby animals mod for 1.7.3? It was one of my must have mods when playing back then and I remember being so disappointed with the ugly baby animals that were officially added to MC.
I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can find the mod, or even a link to a working download, I did find one link to a mediafire file but it was dead.

Fortunately, biome regions stay the same, as well as the location of cave systems (even though the tunnels may be different).
If you want to keep caves and dungeons the same, don't use sq.class from this mod.

Restored Minecart Boosters
In Beta 1.5 the Minecart booster glitch was severely nerfed, with Notch encouraging players to use Powered Rails instead. This mod simply restores the old glitch back to its full glory. Powered Rails can still be used if desired.

Restored Water Lifts
Reverts "Fixed submerged boats rising very very fast" from Beta 1.6. Useful for builds/contraptions, getting to floating islands very quickly, etc.

Old Fire Spread
Reverts "Severely nerfed fire so it spread slower, and doesn't spread infinitely" from Beta 1.6. Fires spread infinitely and at a much faster rate, just like Alpha / early Beta.

Water Spring Propagation Fix
Corrects the spread of water source blocks (springs) so that the surface of water deeper than one block will fill in correctly. More details here.

Beta 1.7.3 Mods | Classicube
Thank you so much for the Depth Buffer Fix mod! I have that exact graphical issue on my RX 480. However, the game doesn't launch when I click play after installing the mod (and replacing SHA1 hashes and whatnot)... Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks so much for the Depth Buffer fix .. I've been trying to find a fix ever since I built my new computer last spring. I have a Radeon R9 280x card, and the glitchy clouds were bugging me to no end.
Does anyone have the Player skins fix file? The link is broken...
EDIT: I didn't realize Minecegamer posted a link. Nevermind.
If I helped, or you just like my post, please press the button.
My mods...
Yeah TemplarEnoch had asked for the skin fix download, but he edited his post since then. Glad you found it. =]
You're probably missing LWJGL. Make sure all the DLLs are in ".minecraft\bin\natives", and the JARs are all in ".minecraft\bin".
