We're always getting so much cobblestone that we literally throw it into lava to get rid of it, but you almost never have enough sand... So why not add some use for all that extra cobblestone by grinding or crushing it into sand, which can then be used in a number of recipes?
Even if you don't like the idea of making a crafting bench of some sort for it, you could even add some functionality to the Redstone Pistons to where if 2 Pistons are facing each other and they push into 1 stone block(resulting in the pistons touching, but not overlapping, to clarify), it could crush it that way? I mean, this would even work in the Education Edition, because that's similar to how you make sand(have to specify similar because scientifically they're different kinds of stone).
