This is a suggestion I thought of for a while now, and I think it'd be really cool to add Mice into the game. In this post, I'm going to show you what the mice will do, why they will exist, and more. In this post, I'll be admitting the good things about adding these to the game and also some possible issues it could have. So let's get into it!
What will mice do and how will they work?
If these were added, I'd like to see them take a little nibble out of a wood plank that players have placed in their home- but not very often will they do this because that would completely destroy the players home. Why will they do this? To make a mouse hole, of course. If they also spot Redstone in the house, they will bite it much like they bite cords in real life- so redstoners might have a tougher time doing their thing if they have a rodent over their back, biting carelessly at their hard work.
Mice will make these holes to store their food. Stealing the idea from the vulture in the Biome vote, they'll take items from players when they drop them, die, or do any activity that forces them to drop an item. Mice will not, however, steal every kind of item and food. They will steal food like fruits (apples, berries, melon slices), seeds, and mice are sweet tooths, so if they're lucky they will happily snatch some sugar or pumpkin pie you left behind. Speaking of sweet foods, if you leave a cake out they could take a bite out of it.
Since this animal just sounds plain rude and with no care in the world, we need some solutions to stop these pesky rodents getting in our house. Here are some ideas: Mice will be petrified of all tamable mobs. Including parrots, dogs, horses, cats, etc. So if you leave your dog to guard your house against this rodent, they won't be coming out of their mouse hole! Allergic to pets? Make a Mouse Trap. A mousetrap can be crafted with 3 wood planks and 2 iron, I'd imagine. When you craft it, place it down somewhere and right-click the trap with any sort of food. The mousetrap is going to work more effectively if you put more hard-to-get food inside. E.G; The mouse wouldn't be as interested Seeds as it would with a Cake or Pumpkin Pie. This poor thing will not die however if you do catch it. It'll trap and stun the mouse in the same position for a couple minutes. You can choose what to do with that time. Or, uh, to avoid wasting iron or going through hard efforts to get a pet, you could just kill it... I don't mind... not... not at all...
However, f you could just swing at the mice and hit it in one shot, what's the point of the mouse traps? Well, I think mice should be incredibly fast. Whenever you swing at it, it'll run away before you even complete the motion- you'll only get the mouse if you're lucky. Even then, with an Iron sword, it will take 2 hits to completely kill the rodent. Unless you time it perfectly, good luck killing that mouse!
Mice will only be attracted to houses with wood planks in them, or generally will just be attracted to rustic, wood houses in general. There will possibly also be Field Mice. These little mice will occasionally steal vegetables from farms, slowing down the process.
In my vision, if this did get added, mice will, unfortunately, not be tamable. Since Minecraft is an educational game, we don't want to add tamable mice because we don't want little kids finding some mouse and picking it up with their bare hands. If it's untamable in real life, it shouldn't be tamable here. The mouse might have the fox kind of feature, where if you feed it food, or get the mouse to trust you when it's first born, the mouse might be cool with you.
Why would they be added to the game?
Players seem a bit too reliant on their homes, being safe from mobs and having the ability to cook food, sleep, etc. But with mice, players will be a bit more on edge when they see a little mouse hole starting to form. To destroy this mouse hole you would need to break it with a sword- if you try to break the hole, if the mouse is inside, it will bite you and take away half a heart of damage.
Instead of players wanting to get back home for safety, they would want to get home because a mouse could possibly be in there, nibbling away at those delicious chunks of wood so they can make your life worse, this adds an interesting challenge to the game, which involves problem-solving. I think you should be able to hook up traps with Redstone, and you could create a mousetrap kind of mini-game.
We also do not have any kind of rodents in the game, so adding these creatures would give Minecraft more life, i think. Also, I'm pretty sure we can all agree mice are absolutely adorable.
That's my suggestion, and I hope to hear some of you guy's opinions on it. All of the features of the mouse that I said above aren't set in stone and it would be awesome to see all of you change my ideas for the mouse or even add new suggestions. What do you think of this lil rodent?
I love this idea so much, very detailed and well written. I agree that people are way too safe in their homes this would make you more on edge while not at total risk of dying. I think they should probably die in one hit from an iron sword, but be very hard to hit as you said. Overall a great idea that would make a fantastic addition to Minecraft!

yeah it is probably a good idea to make it 1 hit, thanks for the feedback

This is a very well thought out suggestion! I could see these mobs getting out of hand, especially if you added a breeding mechanic where two mice will make more baby mice if they get 3+ food items (as an example). You could make them about the same size as Endermites. Love the mousehole idea! That would make me so mad, come back from mining, and seeing that little hole in my plank! Little thief keeps stealing my berries!
If your cat caught one, it would go into love mode. There could be a special animation with a tail hanging out of the cat's mouth.
What would they drop though? String? Cheese? ....leather (eww)?
What would be really neat is to walk through a tall grass biome, and see these little guys leaping out of your way for the safety of trees, like rabbits.

I like the breeding mechanic idea! I think the mice would drop maybe mouse fur, or, like the rabbit, it may drop a mouse foot if you're lucky (or a mouse tail!), or it would possibly drop some of the food it stole from you. : 0
