I love tamed animals in Minecraft, especially in survival--it helps to feel as though you have someone or something else in the loneliness. But, I wish we had more options with them. With tamed wolves, aside from wishing, like I've seen a few others suggest, that they would have custom skins upon taming similar to cats, that they would also just... do more. Some ideas I have are listed here, but some I think I could use community help to flesh out. I also have one issue with all my ideas: I'm not really sure how it would be coded in. Admittedly, I know very little about the structure of Minecraft's code, so if this is all completely useless impossibilities, I'm sorry and willing to be brought back down to Earth, but here we go!:
Free Will Mode: Instead of just sitting your dog down (and sometimes forgetting to ever let him stand back up again and go on a journey with you) whenever you don't want to risk your dog on an adventure through hostile territory, you could allow him to wander about like other tamed mobs, including horses. Perhaps he would only wander in a fifty block radius from where you activated this mode (which you could control by fencing him in or putting him in a pet room, which would make pet rooms a lot neater of a build to do!), so you wouldn't worry if you set him loose around a Minecraft city. An item of feature of which to call him back if you are in his fifty block radius would also be neat. (Another purpose for that new bell, perhaps?
This idea I feel is the most reasonable and potentially addable. What I am about to say next, others may not share the sentiment or feel it would be interesting, but I feel it would make the game a tiny bit more lively.
Sheep dogs: Perhaps these sheep dogs would only be if a dog is tamed in to it by chance, or maybe it would apply to all dogs--the choice could be anything. But ultimately, my idea is since wolves interact with sheep, then dogs could be used to one: guard sheep from other wolves that spawn, round sheep up, or lead them around (the effectiveness would be determined by having multiple sheep dogs to hold up both sides + plus perhaps the back, as sheep would naturally run from dogs like skeletons do, mistaking them as wolves.)
This would be, to me personally, a cool feature because I love playing with the farming and wildlife features of Minecraft, but this is a part I am not sure anyone else would enjoy. I also feel it needs a lot more fleshing out, if anyone is interested in it.
For the most part, the thing I want the most if the first suggestion, that dogs could act on their own accord if you let them. Please, let me know what you think and if you have any ideas for tamed wolves.
I have an unrealistic but fun one: new breeds of wild wolves. They come in different packs, and when two packs both go for the same animal to kill, the packs fight. Maybe now they hunt once an ingame day, and maybe there are biome specific breeds. (Snow dogs, German shepherds are more common in the Taiga because it fits the color, etc)
