Wouldn't it be nice to be able to reclaim leather from leather items, especially since we can smelt down tools and armor? For example, you could take your excess leather armor pieces to the crafting table (or anvil) and by placing that piece beside a set of shears you can cut it down to obtain/reclaim once piece of leather.
This would be great, especially for those who have zombie grinders and acquire quite a few of these items.
given that leather can already be sourced from cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, rabbits (by crafting skins), and fishing…
I don't see much added utility.
NEUTRAL
If the point is to give some utility to found leather armor (rather than to introduce an alternative leather source), I'd rather see these used as an alternative dog food. (Even if the result is purely cosmetic — like parrots dancing to jukeboxes.)

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
In regards to all the other leather sources, there are some biomes where they are difficult to come by. This technique would provide slightly easier way to accumulate leather than curing zombie villagers to get a leather worker.
Maybe for you it isn't hard to come by. For some people it's more difficult especially depending on where you spawned in your world and where your home base is. I never use leather armor but I'm always making enchantment rooms in all of my houses/ bases which requires leather for books and I use a lot of item frames which also requires leather.
To add to this suggestion, when you melt down armor and even tools like iron, gold and chain mail, you should get more than just one nugget of the ore. I think it should depend on the health of the item. Like if it isn't damaged at all you should get at least 3/4th's of what was used to make it. For example it takes 8 ingots of gold to make a gold chest plate. That's 72 gold nuggets. Now obviously that won't stack so that's why you would get a percentage back even if it has no damage. And maybe if it's damaged to the point where it's about to break you can get one nugget back.

You know you can get leather from horses and cows right? Are you saying you can't find cows, really?? Also, four rabbit skins makes one leather and rabbits are super easy to catch if you live in a desert
I know where leather comes from. I have a realm world on the bedrock edition which has had a lot of issues with spawn rates. I haven't found a single rabbit yet. There are horses and cows but personally I don't like killing horses. Ya I can easily breed a bunch of cows and I do but I wouldn't mind being able to reclaim leather armor to use the leather for other things because I don't use leather armor at all. It's pointless in my opinion but I get a lot of it from mobs. So why not give me the option to repurpose it instead of just throwing it all away? And I'd rather spend my time building and doing things I want to do rather than breeding a bunch of cows and killing them. That's just my opinion though. I know it's just a game and the animals aren't real but that's how I prefer to play it.

Rabbit skins? It's almost bed time, so pardon if my math is wrong. That's 540 rabbit skins to make an enchanting room! Wandering across a vast mesa or desert in search for leather sources is just boring.
Another idea that could be interesting is making it so you can use leather to make colored accents for your armor that doesn't add any protection but just adds something that makes your armor unique. Personally I think it's pointless to try to get enough leather at the beginning of starting your world to make leather armor when it doesn't take very long to get iron and make iron armor. But being able to use the leather as a colored accent would be awesome.

I wasn't suggesting you do, I was merely pointing out that leather is readily available from a variety of sources and not hard to get. Of course, if you decide to play the game as a hardcore vegan, then yes, it does pose a problem. Generally I get all the books I need from ransacking villagers libraries or libraries in dungeons.

Everyone plays the game differently. Just because I prefer not to kill horses doesn't mean I play like a hardcore vegan lol. I kill plenty of other animals and eat their meat. I just like the aesthetic of having horses roaming around. I get plenty of leather anyways. Ya I said that it can be difficult for some people but that was a bit of a stretch. What I should have done was emphasize the fact that leather armor is very weak and pretty much pointless to use at the beginning because it's very easy to get iron armor. But once you've been playing in a world for a while you end up collecting a lot of leather armor from mobs so to make it more useful either allow us to reclaim it or give it a new purpose of being a colored accent to other types of armor? Just a thought.

I also like the idea of reclaiming leather from armor pieces, I use a zombie and skele farm and have no use for the leather items as I have diamond, but the chain , and iron and gold I can smelt down
I'd also like to see a renewable source for Lava, like if you put Diorite next to a lava source block then it also becomes a lava source block
and renewable quartz, if you smelted Andesite in a furnace with a lava bucket
I'd also like to see droppers or dispensers able to place a block, maybe a combo Observer/Dispenser, when it detects the spot is open in front of it, it places a block

exactly, I am an item hoarder, so I use a lot of item frames to mark my treasure room chests, currently I have 500(298 used) double chests, plus books for enchant room and librarians trades, thanks for the support

A logical enough idea, but

This can easily be done with custom crafting recipes in 1.13. Hopefully custom recipes will come to the Bedrock version soon afterwards.
Giving a dog a chew toy would be a neat idea.

I don't really see the point as leather isn't hard to come by and has limited use anyway

regardless of all the discussion about how hard it is to get leather, this is a really good idea.
I like the idea of combining all the damaged leather armor from zombies, then crafting it back into one piece of leather.
