I am looking to start an ice farm on a server I am in and I am looking for some answers to some basic icy questions.
Does an ice farm have to be open to the sky? This server has some ...issues... with griefers and staying hidden is a good goal. So, if nice square object is open to the sky, this becomes quite obvious. Can half slabs be used to cover the farm, and still get the freezing effect? Will placing just a pool of water over the Y 95 mark in an extreme hills biome create ice (again without the open to sky concept). Would using an armor stand with Frostwalker boots on it make this pool freeze for later collection (even though Frosted Ice isn't collectible, would it freeze nearby blocks?)? What about using blue ice in the corners?
In short, is there any way to make an ice farm that is not open to the sky?
No. And you could have saved yourself the walk on these forums by just opening up a creative world and testing yourself. That's what creative is for: creating ideas and contraptions, just playing the game mate. And then there is the wiki that explains in detail every single aspect of minecraft.
Actually the entry on ice and packed ice on the wiki are anything but useful. I did check there first. And the suggestion about Creative doesn't work, as the game behaves differently in that mode.
See, I thought I would ask the community, as sometimes thoughts can come up that I hadn't thought of. Humans are social creatures, 'mate'. This is why I thought I would get more opinions on this. Sorry to offend you.

Don't worry, I'm a doctor.
No.
Okay, nice and simple answer.
What if half slabs were used? They act weird with lighting. Would the game consider those as "sky"?

Creative doesn't behave any differently at all, as you can switch between creative and survival without even leaving the world...
Okay.
