I'd love to hear from someone else who has made a turtle farm. My daughter made a huge enclosure in a deep lake where dolphins and turtles naturally spawn. I encouraged 4 turtles to come into it. Now, all but one turtle are not moving. Are the turtles depressed because they can't get out? They just sit there. One turtle is still fine. Before the turtles appeared to be dead, I was able to get them to lay many eggs. They are taking FOREVER to hatch. I mean seriously. We have had hours of game play. Do they need night? Maybe we sleep/skip to day too much? Are they broken?
I caused some turtles to breed in the 'wild' and then used a silk touch pickaxe to collect their eggs. I then placed the eggs on a homemade beach with a pond, all enclosed and well light up. I use bonemeal to keep growing sea grass in the pond. I've got about 30 turtles milling about now.
There are some more elaborate semi-automatic turtle farms, you can find them on youtube.

Just in case someone is looking for info.... It seems turtles can live in captivity if they are in captivity on their home beach. If you encouraged the turtle to follow you into the enclosure from somewhere else, they will try to go back to their home beach to lay eggs. When they can't, they just stop doing anything. It's like they are dead, but they don't turn red and die. I have not had luck getting eggs to hatch when closed in by a fence. They hatched pretty quickly after I broke the fence.
I fenced in 'wild' turtle eggs and they hatched at a normal pace. I then got the hatched ones to breed while inside the fence. Attached is a screenshot of turtles that hatched from transplanted eggs, and laying more eggs.
Edit: Oh, I quickly learned to remove those cactii, the turtles take quite a bit of damage being so slow to get away from them!
Can you place eggs on sand underwater? I have a fish aquarium and I dont know how I would get them in there without hatching them inside it first. Can you pick up turtles using a bucket? Maybe the baby turtles?

Nope and nope. You'll want to temporarily put a block in there that's not in water... not sure if removing that layer will mess up the turtles or not.
Or you could wall a little area under water off, remove the water, hatch the turtles, then remove the wall and let the water fill it back in. That way you aren't actually removing the block they hatched on.

Turtles will call the beach they hatch on home. Get a silk touch pick, grab 2 eggs, and hatch them in your enclosed area... then you are on your way!
