So I opened this same thread on the Java edition discussion forum and thought I would drop a word here as well.
I'm about to download and play Minecraft for the first time on my PC and can't decide weather I should get the older Java version of the game from the Minecraft website or the newer Windows10 version.
On a side note, I would also like to ask about the multiplayer aspect of Minecraft on PC:
Which version has a better support for Multiplayer?
Are you only able to play with other people if you pay to host a realm or join a realm? Or are there other ways as well?
Get the Java version which still includes a free copy of the Windows 10/Bedrock Engine version as well. So you get a two-for-one in this deal.
As for multiplayer... both offer about the same for multiplayer support.
The Windows 10 version makes it a little easier to connect to other players as it uses the Xbox Live service to handle it (you just need the free silver version of Xbox Live, not the paid Gold version). The Windows 10/Bedrock Engine version will also allow you to play with any platform that is using the Bedrock Engine. This currently includes: Windows 10, Mobile (Android and iOS), Xbox One, and later this year Nintendo Switch.
The Java Edition can only play with other Java Edition users. However, there are thousands of servers running for the Java Edition, and you can easily set one of your own up. This will give you a lot of freedom as to where you can play.
One other thing to consider is if you want to get into modded Minecraft. The Bedrock Engine uses what are known as "Add-Ons" that you can install that change a few things. It's not really the same modded experience as the Java Edition as it only changes existing entities in the game and doesn't add anything new. With the Java Edition, the sky is you limit when it comes to modded.
I play both, and enjoy both for what they are. Again, if you buy the Java Edition, you can still get the Windows 10 version for free and be able to play both.
Mods are modifications to the game. They make rule changes and add additional blocks, items, and mobs to the game. If you want a good example, take a look at WelsKnight's YouTube channel. He runs a lot of modded Minecraft series as well as vanilla Minecraft. His current modded series is called "Sprout" which is a quest based mod pack.
Well it depends on what computer your using. Like lower end computers can run Minecraft windows 10 MUCH better than java. And for multiplayer... Well I thing java might be ahead in the game on that problem. SO. Its up to you!
* There's two main editions of the game. One is "Minecraft" (made by combining the Windows 10, Pocket Edition, Xbox One, and Switch editions), and then there's "Minecraft: Java Edition" (same game as before, just renamed).
Saying "Minecraft: Windows 10, PE, Xbox, and Switch Edition" is kinda silly, so it's just shortened it to simply "Minecraft".
* "Minecraft") doesn't use mods. It uses the new way to customize the program: add-ons. Mods (for the java version) have been around several years longer and are more powerful... but have a major disadvantage: they are "version specific". By that I mean you have to use a "Launcher" to choose which older version of the java edition to load up (that you have to download) because a mod will only work with a specific (java) version. That also means that 1) you'll be playing older versions of the game, foregoing any new features or bug fixes of the newer versions, and 2) you may not be able to use all your favorite mods at the same time because they don't use the same version.
Add-ons don't have that problem. They are not version specific. They work with any version, and keep right on working even if the game is updated. (They're "future proof"). While add-ons are not as powerful as mods are, they're working on improving them (there's already been one update).
* "Minecraft" works on most any platform- computers, tablets, smartphones, Xbox One, and Switch- and each one of them can multiplay with the other platforms. In other words, there's one Minecraft that can be used by most everyone. They're all the same, they all receive the same updates at the same time, etc.
Minecraft: Java Edition only works on computers, and you can only play with other java edition players. Nothing from the "Minecraft: Java Edition" works with "Minecraft" edition. And vice-versa. Of course, you also need to install Java for the java edition to run it.
* Minecraft runs great all by itself (it's written in C++ instead of Java). For instance, I flew, at speed ("sprint flying") in one direction constantly for 4 game-days. No lag, no studder, no chunk loading problem. Ran smooth as glass. There's no way I could do that with the java version. Unlike the java edition, it doesn't need a "Launcher", nor does it need the popular 3rd party optimization program "Optifine" to make it tolerable to use or run.
* There's two editions of the game: one multiplatform, one not, one the "old, original", one the "new" one. They are alike in major ways, but they're different in minor ways too... and becoming more different almost daily. Each has it's own feature set. One isn't "better" than the other.... but they are different.
* The java version advocates push three reasons to get the java version:
1- It's the "original" version so it's the "best" version. That's good and bad.
2- It has mods. I've already discussed that.
3- They play the "Free Card", meaning once you buy the game, everything else is free (skins, texture and resource packs, mods, etc.) What you don't hear is those same things can be downloaded for free for "Minecraft". Yes, there is also those things that you can buy, but those are professionally designed and written. All the java ones are written by "the community" (amateurs).
All that said, for now if you get the java edition you get "Minecraft" (Win10 as you're thinking of it) for free. (I'd hurry, this "free" offer may not last much longer!). They're two completely separate games. One won't interfere with the other. In fact, you can even run both at the same time and Alt-Tab between them. Therefore, you could get both and then make up your own mind.
skinnydip is right. I'm old enough to remember the "DOS forever!" posts. The same things they say about upgrading to Windows 10 was said virtually word-for-word about upgrading to Windows 8.3 from Windows 3.1.
Herb_ is correct that the "Bedrock" has only 3 (community) servers.
"Bedrock", for those who's confused, is the engine used by Mojang to write the new Minecraft program with. The Better Together Update (BTU) is the update, using the Bedrock engine, that enabled the combining of Win10, PE, Xbox One, and Switch versions into one single MC edition.
What he didn't mention was:
* BTU just came out. It's just the beginning and this is just the first version. You ain't seen nuthin yet! More servers (and game updates/new features) will be added shortly.
* He also failed to mention that there's thousands of Realms servers that you can play on for free. (Only the Realms server owners have to pay. Everyone else joining those servers plays for free). "Realms" is Mojang's own servers that you basically rent so you can easily set up your own server (or play on other's servers). You can learn more about it here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/realms/ and check out the FAQ here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/realms/faq/
* That all those "9000" servers are run by individuals and most are pretty bad, have few people on them, and constantly beg you for "donations". (Contrary to popular belief, trying to run your own server is not as glamorous or "free" as you may think.)
* To be fair, are all Realms servers "good"? Of course not. But the "3" that are chosen (they had to apply and be approved) is because of their stability, quality, and consistently high number of players. In other words, they're the best of the best. And yes, those "3" are free to play.
Naw, it will be better than the java version, simply because even if it does the exact same things the java version does, it can do them faster and smoother.
Java lovers think it's normal to download and have multiple old versions of the game on their computer.
Java lovers think it's normal to use a Launcher, whose only reason for existence is to choose which old version of the game to run.
Java lovers think it's normal to have to use Optifine to make the game run worth a darn.
Java lovers think it's normal to run old versions of the game so their mods will work.
Java lovers think all that is the way Minecraft should be and expect everyone to resist any kind of change from the way they do things (I guess because of the ole "That's the way we've always done it....", or because they've just gotten used to driving nails with a rock instead of using a hammer.)
Seriously? Really?
That they think that way is sad... really sad. Why the java lovers put up with the above nonsense is beyond me. They don't put up with that for their other games, why do they treat MC different?
Sorry, but I don't think the java-way is how it should be, nor do I believe that's "normal" in the gaming world. (I can't imagine playing only Civ2 just because some mod I like only runs in that version).
I too am with Mojang/MS on this one. One common version of the game for everyone, that's always up-to-date, runs great, simple to run, and will help MC stay relevant in today's market.
Buy the Java version, and you get the windows 10 version for free. Problem solved.
If you've never played minecraft before. you wont know what you're missing with the windows 10 version. I've been playing since the beginning. I quit playing because they never got a mod API working, and my favorite mods werent getting updated.
I just started again, because I got an occulous rift. I cant get vivecraft to work, so Im playing the windows 10 version. THe performance is great. I'll give it that, but its really frustrating that it doesnt have the versatility that Java has. The controls are messed up. As far as addons and resource packs, there are hardly any, and despite what Geneo says, they DO need updated, as there is a resource pack or two, that I like and cant use, and a couple addons that I want to use, but cant.
I just built a huge item sorter, only to find out that it wont ever work, because I cant pick up a stack of items to organize the insides of chests for some stupid reason. If you open the crafting menu, you can pick up a stack and put them down where needed, but you cant do that inside chests. That right there is almost enough to make me abandon the game. And theres no mods for a workaround. Theres a couple simple things they got wrong with the controls that are almost game breaking for me as well.
Basically, the reason minecraft got so popular, is that its so unlimited, and customizable. Windows 10 version is very limited, and barely customizable. But, if you've never played, you wont know what you're missing. A dog thats never been off its leash doesnt realize what he's missing.
If I can get vivecraft to work, Im ditching the windows 10 version.
A lot of modders quit updating their mods. Why should they? Java players can play old versions, so there's no reason to put themselves out and update their mod (if they're still around).
The controls aren't "messed up". They work just fine.... but they aren't what you're used to. Contrary to popular belief, Win10/Bedrock was never suppose to be just like the java version (thank goodness).
Sorry, add-ons and resource packs DON'T need to be updated, and to say they do is totally false. I've used the same resource pack for the last 6 updates and it has never needed updating. Now, there was an update (expanded functionality) to add-ons. While most kept right on working... and those that didn't were automatically updated for you so they would continue to work. In other words, you don't have to depend on a modder to do the updating.
Virtually every game, including MC, uses the same formula:
* Here's the rules.
* Here's the situation.
* Do the best you can.
Java MC's are unique in that they totally ignore that formula. To heck with how the developers intend for you to play the game. Rules? Change 'em. Situation? Make your own. Doing your "best" is too hard? Cheat. They think MC is their game to do with whatever they want to with- and they do.
No, Bedrock doesn't have the "versatility" (some call it "creativity") of the java version- on purpose. You actually have to play Mojang's game instead of playing your own game you made up.

The controls ARE messed up. Think Im wrong? Tell me how to open a chest, grab a stack of items and organize them inside a chest. Please explain to me how I can put a single snowball in every single slot in a chest if I want. cuz I NEED this for my item sorter to function. Dont tell me the controls arent messed up, cuz they ARE.
Heres another way the controls are messed up. Go in creative mode , fly and try to make some vertical stacks of chests and hoppers.. You have to press 'sneak' to place a block next to chest, hopper, dropper, or anything else that holds items inside. Now, for some reason, they bound sneak, and fly down to the same button. So, to place a block next to a chest in the air, you press shift, which makes you drop very fast. The only workaround is to press space at the same time, which, in theory, would make you hover, but it doesnt, it makes you fall slowly, so building any elaborate hopper contraptions while flying is EXTREMELY frustrating.
Here. Try to make this item sorter in creative. Not only is it a pain in the ass due to the flying, and block placing bug, but it is literally impossible to make work, because you cant organize the insides of the chests. So no, IM NOT WRONG.
And you're wrong about addons and resource packs too. Every update that adds or changes a block, breaks the resource pack. Same thing with certain mods. I downloaded a bunch of resourse packs that dont work. And the only add on I like, that actually works is the coordinates add on. The mini map add-on is out of date, Ender horse is out of date, lucky drop, and more drops makes my game crash.
And there is NO SUCH THING AS CHEATING with SP minecraft. Its not a "game." It was made to be fully customizable to the limits of your own imagination. The new version totally stifles that vision. You seem to think its a good thing, that Microsoft is making us play how THEY feel we should play. They want to limit us on our control customization, our resource packs. I used to combine three different packs into my own personal pack. I cant do that anymore. Maybe YOU think mods are cheating. The rest of us think they are a way to make the game better. I understand microsoft wanting to make some dough by selling resource packs and stuff, but they dont even have any good ones. However, there is no reason for them to limit us on control customization.
We used to have complete control and freedom, at the expense of an inferior game engine, and other PITA glitches. Now we have a MUCH smoother running game, but they put us on a leash. Newcomers wont understand what theyre missing, however. Like I said, the only reason Im even playing it is because I recently got an occulous. Im gonna get fed up rather quickly not being able to build my contraptions though.
You can try to defend it all you want, but most of us loved the freedom of the old game that isnt there anymore.
See this right here, is a bunch of crap: "No, Bedrock doesn't have the "versatility" (some call it "creativity") of the java version- on purpose[/i]. You actually have to play Mojang's[/i] game instead of playing your own game you made up"
WTF do they care how we play as long as they get their money?

Game Nazi much?
WTF do they care how we play as long as they get their money?
It's really hard to make a decision, so many valid points on both sides.
It would seem logical to go with the Windows10 version since it seems this is the version that would be receiving most updates and is really the future of Minecraft. The only factor that would hold me back from not playing the Java version would be the mods, which apparently change the gameplay drastically for those looking for more freedom in their playstyle.
I'm leaning more towards the Windows10 version but I guess the best thing to do is play both versions for a while and then decide.
The controls are messed up... compared to what? The java version? Who ever said Bedrock, Win10, etc. was suppose to be "just like" the java version??? Why should it be? They're two different, completely separate games, one designed for multiple platforms and various types of input, one not. Of course they're different- they have to be. What people don't get is there's two Minecraft's now. Play the one you like... but don't expect one to be like the other or you'll always be disappointed and frustrated.
All you're worried about is the ability to arrange/sort items in chests so your sorter works. No, you can't do that in Minecraft... yet. There was a lot of things you couldn't do in Minecraft (Win10) before.... but you can now. More stuff will be added soon, and they may even add some goodies that you can't do in the java version.
Blah blah blah. You act like I dont have a right to complain about not being able to build the same machines I did before.
Tell me, why would they take that detail out in the first place? Its still there with the crafting menu... You can right click a stack and move it around and drop items one at a time. Yet, they leave it out of the chest menu... And its a HUGE issue for me, and thousands of others, and I know damn well, they will never implement it.
And they are not two separate games. They're both MINECRAFT. They should only be different where/when necessary. New minecraft has a much better game engine now, but we cant take advantage of it.
Like the old saying, if it aint broke, dont fix it. They fixed the broken stuff, but they kept fixing, and thats why we're all upset. All they needed to do was transfer it over to a new engine, and make it all compatible with each other, not limit our options. Everytime someone tries to improve something, they take away a bunch of the good stuff... "Hey I know. Lets make it so you cant pick up stacks of blocks while a chest or hopper is open. That way, people cant arrange the insides of their chests. And, lets prevent people from making a mod so they still can if they choose." What reason is there to do such a stupid, stupid thing?
how many features are in vanilla minecraft now after starting as a mod? I remember when Pistons were still a mod. Wolves and horses were mods. The End come form the Aether mod. The PLAYERS and MODDERS made minecraft what it is, just as much as the developers.
Im only playing this version cuz of Oculous, cuz you are right about Java version in that the mods break with every update, so I got frustrated and quit. They kept promising a mod API and it never happened. I can kind of deal with the lack of mods, but the control issues may be where I draw the line.

Well said! Bedrock engine isn't just gonna stop getting updated. Some day I may even be identical to java
Naw, it will be better than the java version, simply because even if it does the exact same things the java version does, it can do them faster and smoother.
You nailed it.
And that is how it should be.
* Here's the rules.
* Here's the situation.

Thanks for the advice guys.
