Agree completely. Are we to believe that Steve can fashion a magical beacon that gives him super strength and speed, but he can't measure from A to B and keep records on his maps? He's too stupid or incompetent to make graph paper?!?
I mean, getting lost within a 32 million by 32 million world is annoying. Not having coordinates is not going to help.
I know what you mean, but...INFINITE WORLDS. It's right there on the (virtual) box!
I'm waiting for the first kid to rubber-band his controller, travel overland until he hits the X or Z overflow value, and break the game. Then call for a petition to sue "M$" for a refund. If I had to guess, the limit is +/- 2 billion, given that I think all supported architectures/operating systems are 32-bit (at least).
And now that I typed that, I have to do some back-of-the-envelope math. Assuming the player starts at 0,0 and the limit on the X axis is +2,147,483,648 (2^31) and flying in creative mode covers 16 blocks per second (I don't actually know how fast it is):
2^31 blocks to cover / 16 blocks per second = 134,217,728 seconds / 3600 seconds per hour = 37,282 hours / 24 hours per day = 1554 days = about 5 years, not including pause time to replace controller batteries.
Doing it in the Nether would take 1/8 as long, so about 194 days or ~6.5 months.
So if the coordinate system is based on 32-bit integers, I think it's possible we'll see the first demand for refunds some time around April 2018.
The Bedrock Edition dev team is one of the most stubborn I've ever seen. They still wont add quasi-connectivity despite how many people have been begging them to. They don't care what the community thinks, they won't listen. They will just continue to further their Microtran$action$. Sad truth.
You get to choose between getting Achievements or having Coordinates.
You can't have both. That's how this game is played, and how Mojang apparently intends for it to be played. Look in the game's Help under "Navigation"- coordinates are never mentioned.
The problem is using coordinates helps you get (some) Achievements, therefore they're considered "cheats".
You've done without coordinates for almost 2 years. I don't understand the fuss- it's not that big a deal. I never missed them. Coordinates maybe nice to have, but they're not needed to play the game.
That said, remember that BT isn't a final product. This is just the beginning with lots of updates, additions, and changes coming. They may change the cheat/coordinate thing in the future. Cross your fingers.

That's not true. I've been playing the Java edition for two years...that has coordinates, and doesn't consider it a cheat..
I've wanted to move to the Win10 edition, so I've been patiently waiting for it to ramp up. I periodically check in when a new update is announced.
No coords wouldn't be so bad if your spawn point updated to wherever you slept last. But that's probably not going to happen.
How many people build a base at or near spawn point....
It appears that MJ wants to move Win10 in a completely different direction. Oh well. As long as they don't mess with the Java edition, I'm good.

That's not true. I've been playing the Java edition for two years...that has coordinates, and doesn't consider it a cheat.. This isn't the java edition.
I've wanted to move to the Win10 edition, so I've been patiently waiting for it to ramp up. I periodically check in when a new update is announced.
No coords wouldn't be so bad if your spawn point updated to wherever you slept last. But that's probably not going to happen. Agreed, probably not.
How many people build a base at or near spawn point.... I do!!! For me a Compass is much more useful to find your way home than coordinates or maps are. (If I don't like my spawn point, I just create a new world.)
It appears that MJ wants to move Win10 in a completely different direction. Absolutely! Thank goodness! Oh well. As long as they don't mess with the Java edition, I'm good. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
You've done without coordinates for almost 2 years.
I have had coordinates, right on my map, for two years. Console Edition has always had them. Now that we are Better Together, there are all different viewpoints coming to bear, so we can't assume everybody has been playing MC:PE, or MC:JE, or MC:Win10.
Love your avatar. Some say he's actually an android manufactured by Lotus to embarrass human drivers.
Thanks. Too bad Top Gear went down the tube- loved that show. The Stig was my hero (and brought me many a giggle).
As for what I have against the java version.... most everything. When I got my new laptop, I didn't even bother installing the java version. Win10 spoiled me rotten. I'm really happy with the new MC. I flew fast in one direction constantly for 4 game days straight. No studdering, no lag with chunk creation (including during rain and snow).... it just worked as you'd expect it to.
But that was off topic and I don't want the mods after me (or us).
We were discussing if having to turn on cheats (and therefore losing Achievements) was worth it to get coordinates. To me, that's an individual decision. Some people have no trouble making that decision, some resent having to make that decision.
Personally I don't see how coords makes any achievement easier to get. As ha been stated earlier, console has always had coords. I only ever really use them to check for y12 and maybe for arranging portals (don't recall any achievements for that) but I can live without them. in fact, if I'm honest, I am.getting used to it and enjoying the extra challenge. Infinite worlds are scary, nearly lost my base a few times already!
To me, starting out is the best part. It's an unknown world full of bad things who's sole purpose in life is to get me! It's little ole me against the big, bad world. I've "lost" my base several times and it's not fun- which is why I always build mine near the spawn point. No matter how far I wander, I can always get home with my trusty Compass.
I've never needed coordinates. To me, they're a crutch that some lean on, but they're not needed.
How are coordinates cheating? Makes no sense whatsoever. If you explored an area, it only makes sense that you mapped and made coordinates. I rarely use the coordinates on xbox, but they were helpful when trying to line up tunnels from opposite ends. Maps and compasses are fine, but trying to survey a build area needs coordinates.
With coordinates you never get lost, no matter how far away or Deep in a mine you are, you just have to hit f3 and done. If you think that that doesn't change the game and was intended in an exploration/survival/building game than we have different opinions on what an exploration/survival/bullding game should be. I think people just want it easy and in my opinion coordinates took a lot of fun away from minecraft.
But if we use your reasoning, we could say beds are cheating because it allows you to avoid hostile mobs.

Huh, I guess I never considered using coordinates for "not getting lost". That's what maps and nerdpoles are for.
When significant game mechanics depend on being exactly X or more than Y blocks from this or that thing, having a way to easily count X and Y is important. I don't think it's game-destroying to not have coords, but man it makes a lot of things harder to build.
But the discussion isn't even about "have coords" vs. "not have coords", since it's a toggle. It's about why it's considered a "cheat" when the only effect of enabling said "cheat(s)" is to disable achievements. I guess there's an achievement or two that is made much easier with coordinates on? I don't really hunt achievements so I dunno what those cheatable ones might be.
Java version is akin to fine dining, high fashion, high creativity, master-builders. What will be formerly known as Windows 10, is for mass distribution, akin to WalMart, Sam's, big box stores, fashion knock-offs, and fast food joints. There is a place for both, and most likely more money to be milked out of the audience for mass production products. I started with Microsoft WIndows 10 in June, then PC/Mac Java early September. Java has far more options for the creative end. I do hope the Better Together, which has somewhat forcefully upgraded itself to what was formerly know as Minecraft Windows 10, does include the map option. I do home that Mojang retains it's hold on the Java version, and keeps Microsoft away from that. There is likely a reason, from my perspective as a new comer, that the master artists using 2009 Minecraft, and older versions of forge, etc. Hopefully, those older versions, and all associated add-ons, will remain available. I do not see that it is possible to install what was Minecraft Windows 10 1.1.5. Better Together will be what one gets if one needs to uninstall and reinstall what was in place before. I do not see in Xbox|Microsoft any way to get previous versions. There, I see that we will get what they interpret to be as most marketable. And if most persons do not want, or use, maps, maps will not happen. Time will tell.
I was thrilled when I found out that coordinates were added to MC Win10.
However, coords are only available under cheats....
Using coordinates isn't cheating. Just ask any Java MC player...
How else could you properly space out Nether portals...

"Achievements" are earned.
It's pretty simple to me:
You get to choose between getting Achievements or having Coordinates.
You can't have both. That's how this game is played, and how Mojang apparently intends for it to be played. Look in the game's Help under "Navigation"- coordinates are never mentioned.
