Alright so it's been years since I really played on PC, but now that the Windows 10 version adds cross-platform play I'm interested again. The only problem I've seen is that I can't freely download and insert resource packs anymore, and that was a huge draw to the game for me. I've searched through every folder in program files and put resource packs in all of them and they won't show up in the resource pack menu in-game. I've found little help online on actually making/downloading a pack and getting it to work in the newest update of the Windows 10 edition, so I guess my real question is:
Is freely modifying Minecraft dead for Windows 10?

No, it's not dead. It's simply done different.
For Minecraft: Bedrock Edition there are *.mcpack files that will install texture packs, add-ons, etc. It's a little easier.

Ohhh ok thanks for the info, there's not a lot of resources on this. Makes sense to have just one file type for everything.
