(I hope this is the right section. I'm still pretty new to win10 but I hear that the resource pack format is practically the same as PE.)
I've been working on a resource pack for Windows 10 edition lately, but when it comes to adding in the grass side textures, I've been having a bit of an issue. The transparency doesn't seem to work and the sides of my grass blocks look like this.
I've double checked to make sure I saved everything properly using the default vanilla pack that Mojang provided as a reference, and I tried using both .tga and .png files. Not sure where to go from here.

I'm having the same problem- did you just change the grass_side.tga ? I cannot even get a grass side to work.... (is it just the dirt.png + the grass_side.tga, or is there an actual independent grass_side texture?)
I've managed to fix it. The semitransparent grass side texture needs to include the dirt, and then you use a layer mask to block it out. Then export as .tga
I'm not the best at putting it into words, and I know the process differs a bit among image editors.
For GIMP (The program I'm using):
Open up the grass_side texture (The one that includes the dirt in the texture). Make sure the grassy part is gray so the game can recolour it properly using the biome palette.
Right click on the layer and select "Add Layer Mask > White"
Select all of the dirt pixels, and fill in the area with black on the layer mask image. (Areas of the mask filled in with black instead of white will be unaffected by the biome palette.)
Fellas i made an account here specifically to tell yall how i fixed the same issue. delete the PNG side_grass so you should only have the TGA file, and make sure that texture has your black and white grass overlay, with the dirt part of the texture at 1% opacity!!!
U had to create texture wheres dirt have opacity from 1% to 15% in normal color; the opacity here causes coloring by BIOM, so more opacity % mean more green on texture.
And grass with 100% opacity but in B&W.
(png) size: 256x256 pixels
Format that works for me here is PNG for all kind of grass.
So in the end I have just 3 textures that contain grass: grass_side.png, grass_side_snowed.png, grass_top.png (grass_top must be in same B&W like on side)
Hope I helped you
Screenshot have opacity of DIRT on 15% cause I had some problem with little white stripe under grass.
What you need to do is open an image as new layer and that image is the dirt texture (without the grass) and then you want to put the layer's opacity from 1% to 15%.After that you need to open another image as layer and this will be the grass side (without the dirt) which will have to be gray scaled and leave its opacity at 100%.Lastly make sure the grass layer is on top of the dirt layer and then export as .tga and you'll be good to go!
No thanks but if you want that fix you need to let me know if you going for grid or what it is the actual problem of grass. I followed sixfootblue instructions and that helped me out with my grass.
Thank you so much for sharing this method. The other ones with the opacity set to 1% displayed slight color differences in the block textures. You helped me out a bunch!

@Mouldycatskin
I have had the same problem as this guy, i followed your instructions and my grass turns out like this?
So I found out how to fix it (I am on android version Minecraft PE version 1.12.0) (and I made textures in photoshop cs6)
MouldycatSkin was actually right.

I know this thread is decently old, but do you just save it under the name of grass_side.tga to replace the old one? Or...?
can anyone help me my texture pack is broken
can anyone help me my texture pack is broken
grass_side_carried should include non transparent lower grass texture (dirt) grass_side should include transparent gray grass texture without dirt.
For people who don't understand in 2020
@Mouldycatskin what do you mean by "black and white"
please help why is the grass like this
