This is my looping item sorter. I took out the overflow due to issues with items being sortes. A few items would get sorted the rest would flow to the overflow. This way they just keep moving until they are sorted.
The solution I found to the items not getting sorted was to put a dropper on a 2-tick timer delay on the front-end of the hopper chain. So it feeds the items in one at a time rather than in a flood. You'll have to build an item reservoir to hold the backlog of items while the dropper trickle-feeds out. I get very few missed items in any of the sorter storage systems I've built since doing this.
And the infinite loop is nice until you get items not in your storage filters. The hopper system will just sit there infinitely using up your CPU going around in circles.
I do wish they'd get that hopper issue worked out though. It's got to be something buried deep in the way hoppers work though, or they'd have fixed it before now. The bug's been around for quite a while.
Why do t you just make a water course over the hoppers that would be a lot cheaper in resources?
I've thought about using one in mine, but it requires ice. I don't know if hoppers will pull an item from under a block of ice. Minecart hoppers would, but that would make it even more expensive.
Or it means that every 8 blocks, your storage system has to drop 1 block so that the flow continues onward.
I don't know about any of that - I've never tried any of those. However, I do think I'm going to try the water idea - I'm going to try to build a vertically spiral storage system, so the water does drop as it flows around.
I've found out why it won't work to run water over hoppers - hoppers have a spot in the center where things can drop down and get stuck. Items flowing down the middle of the channel don't go anywhere.
