With the new version, I decided to start a new world, one with more variety, so I could see more of the new things (like squid). Arkel was a nice world, but there was no snow, no oceans, no deserts, anywhere nearby.
So I found the world Rhageos (name and seed). It has desert, ocean, and snow all within immediate walking distance. Hills can be found a short distance away.
End of Day 2: I have seen the Squid gamboling in the waves! I have collected the rotten meat from decomposed zombies. This should be an interesting world.
So far all I've done is dig myself a shelter along the shore, started a garden, collected and planted some sugar cane, and started my first mineshaft. A fairly productive 2 days' work. More to come in the future. I have a plan for an underwater house I'd like to build out in the bay. I wonder if the squid will try to interfere?

A minor change at the original camp: I changed the Glowstone lanterns into Redstone lanterns with inverted daylight sensors.
Because it may create gates floating in mid-air, and once you've fallen off it, there's no way back up except by building a huge one-block bridge from the nearest land.
I went exploring, looking for swampland to harvest some vines from, and instead found a region of very pretty Ice Spires. It took me quite a bit of work, but I eventually managed to find where to place a Nether Portal to reach it quickly thru the Nether.

I even indulged in a scary bit of cave-diving:
Unfortunately it didn't result in any hidden riches, although it might be a fun place to stick a hidden chest to hide all my valuable loots in.
The ghasts were becoming a more major nuisance, so I indulged in a large-scale improvement plan, especially since I had the new path to the Ice Spires gate to protect.
I don't plan on deleting it. I even put in a bit of work the other day extending the elevated track to the northern village. But I'm not really a great architect or builder. I don't come up with elaborate plans of things I want to build ahead of time, I just get occasional inspirations, usually from something I find in the map. The problem with Arkel was that I pretty much run out of different terrain. Almost everything around me was the same or very similar biome. Plains and hills. The only variation I found was a Spruce forest, and other than the wolves I found there, it didn't grab me, for some reason. With Rhageos, I have 3 different biomes within a short walk, 4 if you count the ocean/lakes, which I do. I like building underwater, for some reason.
I'm hoping Rhageos will turn out even bigger and better than Arkel, and it gives me the additional thrill of exploring something new again, which I had lost with Arkel. You can probably expect to see some of the same ideas from Arkel show up in some form in Rhageos. The roadsystem will probably return, at the very least. I already made up a mockup of the house I plan on building as soon as I collect the resources in a creative world.
If/when Realms opens up for MCPE, I can see me creating a world for my, my kids and my nephew, and then it would be possible to let folks in occasionally for visits if they wanted. A collaboratively-built world would be interesting, although since all of the collaborators mentioned above are under 10, don't expect high art from any of us. I'd probably be up for a different shared world with other players though.
Dear Diary,
Overall, I'm doing pretty well in this new world. I've built myself a fairly secure shelter, dug a mineshaft all the way down to bedrock, I have a small farm and some tree stock to keep me provided with food and wood (fwood?). I am having some issues with the local monsters, although nothing I haven't been able to handle so far. Because my shelter is dug into the side of the hill, it's possible for things to climb on the roof and then jump down on me when I come out the front door. Creepers have done that a couple of times. One of them even collapsed a sand cave that was just down slope from me. I'm going to try and turn that into a natural sheep and cow pen. I finally put up a fence around the edge of the hilltop that should stop most of the jumpers. If I can get some netherrack together, a flame barrier would be a nice finishing touch, I think.
To enjoy the sea breeze off the bay, I set up the front of my shelter with alternating fenceposts, one high, one low. That way I could slip in and out any time without having to use the door. I thought it would keep out the mobs, but a zombie managed to find a gap and come through (by accident, I think - all others tried to use the front door). And one time, this tiny little zombie riding a chicken just ran right in and started attacking me! That was the weirdest thing I've seen so far! I've blocked up the gaps with half-slabs. I think that will keep them from getting in, although I can't slip between the bars anymore either.
I built a boat and fishing pole the other day. I've only tried fishing once, and didn't catch anything. But I could see them out there. Maybe the squid scared them away?
I'll add some pictures to you soon, Diary. Right now everything's still pretty rough looking, but I don't have the resources to really polish things off yet.
Another week has passed. I've been fairly busy, but have still made some decent progress with building things up. Since mobs liked spawning on top of my hill, I opened up the top of my mineshaft and built a monster spawner on top of the hill. I built it way overscale, and it used up all my cobblestone. I've never run out of cobblestone before. The building itself is currently a huge ugly monstrosity on the landscape, but I plan on prettying it up as I'm able. First though, I need to landscape and light up the surroundings, so that the only dark place is inside the building.
A funny thing happened the other day... my boat got hijacked.
And I've prettied up the inside of my workshop quite a bit.
Phase 1 of Landscaping, the workshop path and dock.
I'm enjoying architecting a bit more this time around. I attribute it to reading Sacheverell's articles on the topic. Who knows, maybe Rhageos will look a lot better in the end than Arkel?
I haven't produced a whole lot lately. I've done a bit more on the animal farm outside, but still haven't come up with a design I really like. The mob spawner is not producing mobs. I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe the platforms aren't big enough? I've tried expanding the light sources outside to leave no other spawn locations available, but that hasn't seemed to help any.
So for something new to do to distract myself, I started prepping the space for my underwater house. Trying a new method - rather than deep sea diving to place each block one at a time, I'm pushing the waters back. Then when I'm done it will be easy to take down the barriers and let the sea flow back in.
This was an early stage of the preparation. The open area is now about 4 times larger, about 10x10, and I still have a bit more to do. I need a 13x13 area of clear space.
I actually got to work and accomplished something! *shock!*
The Underwater House is essentially built, although I've still got some decorating to do. It's made out of cobblestone, I may change that in places to worked stone, but the cobblestone helps it blend into the seafloor better.
Appreciate that! My son's tablet stopped working, so he's been glomming mine a lot, and I've been playing another game on my PC that is a good timekiller on its own.
I've only barely started on the new additions. I've built an Anvil, but not used it. I went and turned a bunch of lava into obsidian and built some Gates to the Nether. They all took me to the same place inside the Nether, and I haven't explored much there yet. I'm being cautious so I don't die in the Nether. I finally moved the Gate in the real world into a small locked cavern under my main workshop, so that if anything comes through it's trapped. And I'm not certain of this, but I think I have to build a new Gate in both the Nether and the real world to link them, so I'll give that a try too. If that works I'll be able to have a nice transport network covering long distances.
In the meantime, I've built a Snow Golem (he melted), and collected some Soul Sand, Netherrack and Marble. I've also collected a few experience points.
The only part that might be worth pictures is the Gate and Nether, and I'll post those some time later, when I have more to show.
I've been playing around in the Nether when I've had a chance. Collecting basic raw materials seems to be easy, but navigation is rough. I wound up getting lost last night and had to commit suicide to get back home. I didn't lose anything critical (I'd left my diamond pickaxe at home this time). But I either need to come up with some sort of tracks to leave behind me, or build roads wherever I go. Or carry 14 obsidians and a flint so I can build an emergency exit when I need. Or, y'know, both.
I'm thinking about tearing down the big mob spawner building over my lair. Nothing's spawning in it, and due to the glitch where my guy spawns a half block above the surface, he keeps jumping up into it when I start the game. In fact, twice now he hasn't even gone all the way up - he spawned inside the floor. He suffocated from it once, and I was ready to dig myself out the next time.
Attached are some pics from my basic work on my starting gate in the Nether. I assume my goal is to find a Nether Fortress and move my gate there. That is, if building a gate there doesn't link it to my second prime world gate. I'll have to see how that works.
I placed the arrows on the ground here so that if I get lost and manage to get a look down, I can get a clue where my gate is:
This is the gate down to the lava fields, so I can convert my netherrack into nether bricks for my paths.
I had to build a staircase up from my starting gate since it's so close to the bottom of the Nether.
I don't really get into mods for the game. There are mods that will auto-mine as large a stretch of the world as I want; mods like yours to grow all the food I could ever want; probably mods to construct pre-fab buildings for me too. In fact, mods to take all the challenge out of the game, leaving me with nothing to do at all, except wander around a randomly generated map and click-kill random mobs. And if I want to beat on mobs, Minecraft isn't the most exciting game out there for that.
Thanks, but for me, managing all of that extra work is part of the charm of the game. I have a small farm that takes little effort to give me all the food I need. in fact, now that hunger is a thing, I'll probably have to visit it more often to make sure it gets harvested properly. I've a tendency to let it sit idle.
Ah, by calling it an 'auto-harvest' I thought you meant it was a mod. If you mean a patch of ground where you run water over it to auto-pluck the plants, I've built one of those before. My current farm is not one of that style, but it wouldn't take much to turn it into one. I just haven't done it yet. In Arkel, I had a 4-story auto-farm. Just remove the plug at the top, the water would hit every floor on the way down and harvest all the plants for me. There were a few corners the crops could get jammed in, but for the most part it worked well.
Right. Sorry for the confusion. I've given some thought to building an underwater farm next to my underwater house, but hadn't decided on a design for it yet when the update came out, and I've been concentrating on the Nether since then. With hunger now an issue to be managed, I should probably work on that. Right now I've been subsisting on Mushroom stew from mushrooms collected in the Nether. Maybe I should build myself a shroom farm there too while I'm at it. Can't use water to auto-harvest it though.
After my base got shelled by a ghast, I decided to move it into a more sheltered location. I dug out the side of the hill next to me and moved the gate into it.
This is the view from the top of the stairs. I've since dug a staircase into the hill straight ahead, trying to find a Nether Fortress, but I ran into the ceiling first.
I have found out that lava burns don't hurt if your hunger bar is fully stocked. You heal just as fast as you burn. Opens up an avenue for crossing a lava lake if needed.
I have found out that lava burns don't hurt if your hunger bar is fully stocked. You heal just as fast as you burn. Opens up an avenue for crossing a lava lake if needed.
Correction: You heal faster than you burn when you're on fire if your hunger bar is full. Being in lava is still very quickly fatal. I didn't die, but was brought down to 3 hearts very quickly before I managed to get back out of the lava. But I healed very quickly once I got out, even though I was still burning.
