It does for me too now, every time. Must've been a one-time glitch that made them unbreakable. Like I said, when I reloaded the world, they were one-punch gone. Very strange.
Another weird thing, when I loaded my 0.2.2 survival world with a bunch of hacked-in items in 0.3.0, some of the items, such as 248, 249, and 255, stayed in my inventory, though not infinite anymore. Others jumped out and spread drops around me like I had died. As soon as the world loaded, I looked around to see drops of lapis blocks, mossy cobble, TNT, water, and block 254 (shown above) on the ground. I was able to pick up the lapis, mossystone, and 254, but the TNT and water were uncollectable.
PE's inventory system is just bewildering to me...
EDIT: As I just found out in another thread, my inventory was full. I couldn't pick some items up because my inv was full of crap, like 5 stacks of sand, 4 stacks of obsidian, and a bunch of those glitchy blocks from a few posts up. So problem solved.
Hey 500, I just figured out what the 255s in slots 1-8 0-8 are! They're the hotbar!
Each of those 9 slots represents a hotbar square, with 0 on the left, and 8 on the right. Even on devices with less-than-9 hotbar squares, it keeps a memory of the last 9 items used. The damage value of each 255 points to the slot of whatever item is in the bar.
I started a new world from scratch, then immediately opened it in your inv-editor. All the 255s had a "-1" damage value, indicating null. I opened a frequently-played world, and changed all the 255 damages to -1, and when I opened the game, my hotbar was empty. So I tapped 3 things into it, then went back to the inv-editor. Slots 1-3 had damage values that perfectly matched the slot numbers of the 3 items I put in, and the rest were still -1.
Yay for mystery solving!
You can't see it, but I'm doing a happydance right now over this discovery!
EDIT: I meant slots 0-8, not 1-8. There are 9 of them total.
I will feature this app mod tool in an episode of my Let's Play MineCraft: Pocket Edition Series! This actually looks amazing and I have went through the source code/files on GitHub! Looks pretty good!

/me dances with joy
So I'll hide the first 8 slots in the inventory editor.
For your discovery, you win an internet.
Jsyk this works to edit in 0.3.0 just tested it. Water doesn't have a texture but tnt does.
Thanks. The major version of Minecraft PE is actually stored in level.dat, under the tag StorageVersion (e.g. 0.2.0 has 2 in that tag, 0.3.0 has 3), so the next version will print out a warning if the version is higher.

I still see the first 8 slots in the newest version too. And no browse button.
I did notice the list stays where it was after editing an item now...thanks!!
We used to have 45 slots in 0.2, but now we only get 36. PE has over 70 blocks and items now, and given the limited nature of resources in PE survival, throwing things away to make room for other things is never a desirable option.
I'm going to try adding more entries to the end of a level.dat in a hex editor; it might just be that simple......if we're lucky.
EDIT: Well, no dice. Adding more slots screws with the game's ability to read the player's position data, which is stored after the inventory. Every time I tried, I appeared in the void & died twice, then spawned on top of the invisible bedrock outside the world. Checking my inventory before death, I still had only 36 slots, instead of the 48 I was hoping for.

The editor reads in the full NBT structure, so I can actually add more slot data. I just don't know if the game would read the extra slots. I'll leave that experiment until the next version.
This beta is pretty much what I'm going to upload to Google Play tomorrow, and no more functionality would be added except a back up function.

I fear that if more slots are merely added to level.dat, that the game will simply remove them when the world is loaded, and throw their contents on the ground, much like the behavior I observed in my more item slots exploit thread. It seems to be hard-coded that survival worlds ONLY get 36 slots, unless the "creative world glitch" is utilized before the world is loaded. The inv-editor will recognize all the slots if the world has 55 of them, but the game realizes that the extras shouldn't be there, and "fixes" it.
I think more slots will require a mod to the game itself.
Either way, keep up the awesome work! This is by far the handiest tool MCPE has ever had.

Circumference over diameter!
What Android version are you using and which version of Minecraft Pocket Edition do you have?
I've uploaded a new beta that hides the first 8 slots.

Although the 8 slots are still there and there is no Browse.
It sounds like I somehow uploaded an old version of Beta 1. I think either time travel just happened or I really screwed up. Please re-download.

See the link in my last post. There's a glitch that makes that happen temporarily.
