As some of you know, 0.9.0 has a new world format that makes even very large infinite worlds quite small, ranging from 3 mb - 7 mb, rather than the old 21 mb chunks.dat file. There's also a new folder called "db" which holds .log files which I don't know what they do. If someone could enlighten me, please, do so.
Second of all, is the problem, which is MCedit no longer works with the new file format (even for infinite worlds.) Since chunks.dat files no longer work, having been replaced by the level.dat file (which when selected by MCedit shows that the world is completely empty, prompts you to create chunks) and any attempts to port or edit worlds are stalled.
So to end off, while we have a new world format that saves space, we won't see any ported maps in a while, at least until someone finds a work around or a different program that can do similar things such as MCedit.

Work on my city map has stalled too, sadly.
That is quite unfortunate, and I was looking forward to Autotaker's Tazader 11...
Well, I guess I better download the ported ones I have now before the update. There's a few I deleted, but I'l want to put them back in now if the format has changed in the 9.0 update.
This is good to know. Knowing the Minecraft community, however, it shouldn't take too terribly long for someone to find a workaround... I guess only time will tell.
Eeek, whatever a workaround might be, I'm thinking that future mapmakers and porters ain't going to be using MCedit, it just doesn't work with the new format, doesn't read the files in the "db" folder, nor does it work with the level.dat file.

Hopefully Mcedit devs find a way to fix this. Tazader 11 will be impossible without it. Industria updates too.
Like seriously, I cant understand why they did this just to save a few mb. Most phones have 16-30gb of space now!
True, but not everyone uses "most phones". They're trying to save the people who are using lower-end devices, such as an iPod 4th-gen, or an iPhone 4.
In any case, hopefully the MCedit devs can find a workaround, otherwise map ports and such will be grinding to a halt once the update is released for iOS and Android (officially).

Apparently, the new world format not only saves space, but also loads quicker. I guess that's a plus for slower phones.

Oh sorry to say this but the working on the exclusive city for all people who really served MCPE is postponed.
But I have a better plan for a nice city for people who really served MCPE!
Its called New Blocksburg!
It's gonna have all this features:
Nice Downtown Area*
MCPE Hall of Fame
Subway stations
sewers
A building similar to space needle but its called Blocksburg 2020**
Airport
Instead of houses i'll replace them with palaces for all people who served MCPE!
Construction will start when 0.9.0 is release!
*The down town will have large skyscrapers like the ones in your city, well it will be the last one to be done!
**I got this idea cuz were moving to seattle on November
-the new format is based on LevelDB by Google.
-we didn't do this to save megabytes, but as the old format was 100% not working with infinite worlds, we needed a new flexible storage. As a plus, it's also fast and compresses better.
-we're planning to release our version of LevelDB as open source (after 0.9 iOS is out) so every tool can read/write maps even easier than before.
-I've already passed our LevelDB version to MCEdit's author so he can update it for 0.9.

Very excited for 0.9 update. Also something that would be cool would be a Realms bundle when it comes out for PE. Have a discount for those who have a PC and PE Realms both. Just a thougt and it would look good in an advertisement.

I wanted to add some new 0.9.0 blocks to a world I created in version 0.8.1. But as you mentioned, it is not possible (yet) to edit a 0.9.0 world in MCedit.
I did however have success in adding 0.9.0 blocks to an older world in MCedit. The blocks imported to the new version successfully. It's not ideal since the new blocks appear as undefined blocks in MCedit. It's difficult to see what you are doing without checking individual block ids. In this case, I used the various colors of stained clay as a test.
software: MCEdit 0.1.8build799 on a Mac
Here are the MCedit and corresponding Minecraft PE v0.9.0 screen shots.

My map, Industria, is even better.
