Steel Enhancement Mod Update 2.0, The Dark Steel Update, has just been released! This update adds a second type of steel, Dark Steel, to the mod as well as a couple of updates to standard steel as well.
In addition to being able to get Chunks of Steel out of smelted Iron Ingots in the bottom 20 layers of the map, where thousands of years of heat and pressure has been applied to Iron Ore, Steel Ore is now generated and has a chance of dropping 1-2 Chunks of Steel each. Steel Ore is rare and only spawns in layers 1-20 but if your lucky you will find some! Also a new decoration block as been added, Polished Steel. Polished Steel can be crafted by putting two blocks of steel vertically in a crafting bench.
Dark Steel is a type of steel that can be crafted to a sharper edge than Diamond but is not as hard as Diamond. This means that Dark Steel weapons and tools will do slightly more damage and will be a little more efficient but are still not able to break Obsidian and will not last as long as Diamond weapons or tools. Also due to Dark Steel not being as hard as Diamond Dark Steel armor provides slightly less protection than Diamond Armor.
Dark Steel weapons, tools, and armor can be crafted by finding Dark Steel Ore in the Nether! This is the only place that Dark Steel Ore generates and will give you another worthwhile reason to travel to the Nether. Each Dark Steel Ore will give you 1-2 Chunks of Dark Steel. Three Chunks of Dark Steel can be crafted into a Dark Steel Ingot which can then be used to create Dark Steel weapons, tools, and armor. There is also a decorative block or Polished Dark Steel that is crafted using two Blocks of Dark Steel.
**UPDATED 8/15** Version 1.7.10-1.2
Steel Enhancement Mod Update 1.2 has just been released! This updated aims to balance the mod and prevent Iron from being outdated and useless. To complete this Iron Ingots now create Chunk's of Steel when they are smelted in a furnace. It now takes 3 Chunk's of Steel to created 1 Steel Ingot. That comes out to be a much higher Iron consumption rate than previously in the crafting of Steel. Here is a nifty conversion chart for the amount of Iron that is needed to craft Steel tools and armor.
Steel Ingot = 3 Iron Ingots
Steel Shovel = 3 Iron Ingots
Steel Sword = 6 Iron Ingots
Steel Hoe = 6 Iron Ingots
Steel Pickaxe = 9 Iron Ingots
Steel Axe = 9 Iron Ingots
Steel Boots = 12 Iron Ingots
Steel Helmet = 15 Iron Ingots
Steel Leggings = 21 Iron Ingots
Steel Chestplate = 24 Iron Ingots
Have you ever played a game of survival and had a hard time finding enough diamonds to upgrade your weapons, armor, and tools? And then once you've made a few things out of diamond you just can't seem to find more to replace the items that have been used up? If this fits the bill for you or you just want to add some more cool weapons, armor, and tools to your game then the Steel Enhancement Mod is for you. The Steel Enhancement Mod adds a set of Steel armor, weapons, and tools to the game that have strength, damage, and durability greater than Iron but weaker than Diamond. This gives gives your average survival player an edge up on the creepy crawlies of the night and dark caves.

How to Get Steel in Minecraft
The simple method to obtain steel in Minecraft is to simply smelt an Iron Ingot in a Furnace and you will in return receive 1 Chunk of Steel. 3 Chunk's of Steel can then be used in a crafting bench to craft 1 Steel Ingot. A Steel Ingot can then be made to make all of the other Steel Tools, Weapons, and Armor just like you would any other tool.
This method was chosen because Steel is really just a refined product of iron whose creation relied on extreme temperatures. So I thought it fitting to use a furnace to smelt an Iron Ingot and therefore refine it into a Chunk of Steel and then Steel Ingot.

I like the idea of having a tier between iron / diamond, but this basically negates the need for iron as its a 1 for 1 upgrade. No reason to use iron armor / tools at all if all it takes is putting it in a furnace a second time.
If there was something else to it to make steel apart from just putting the iron in a furnace a second time it would fill that role a bit more. For example needing a stronger furnace that takes longer to smelt and burns more fuel (or requires a lava source) or mixing the iron with something else (2x iron + coal = steel chunk, then smelt the chunk for a single steel ingot)
Just something to make it better than iron, but also costs more than iron.
Thanks for the great input. I have actually been thinking about a way to try and balance this mod out so that iron doesn't become worthless. I hope to add some changes in the near future and hopefully accomplish this.
I like this mod i like how it doesn't change game play to much but adds just a little spice to the game and i agree you should make it harder to get steel I hope this mod grows to be very big!
Steel Enhancement Mod Version 1.7.10-1.2 has been released. This version adds Chunk's of Steel to re-balance the mod and prevent Iron from becoming obsolete. This update also comes with a custom creative tab for all of the Steel Enhancement Mod content. I have also added Images and crafting recipes for all of the items as well as updated content.
A very needed mod indeed. Thank you so much for making it. Is the smelt time for steel the same as it is for iron.? If so could you add a config option to change the length of time it takes to smelt the steel? Over all a great mod that I' m sure people will love.
Hikachan - I'm glad you like the mod. Yes the smelting time for steel is the same for iron which is the default Minecraft smelting speed. At this time I don't have a config option to change the length of smelting time but may look into this for future updates. Thanks for the idea.
3040wilson2 - That would be great. If you do a Spanish mod review let me know and I'll link to the video.
cyrusblaze - I hope you like the mod and the re-balancing. Thanks for the idea's previously.

Planning to make a Steel Golem that is a little stronger than an Iron Golem but spawns in certain biomes.
Planning on adding Steel Bars for decoration that are just like Iron Bars.
