My 2nd birch tree farm is laid out like this at y=6

L = lantern, S = stone slab, B = birch sapling. The slabs are to prevent slimes from spawning. The lantern is placed on top of another slab at y=6. there is a 6 block gap ABOVE the sapling for half of the farm and infinite gap for the other half. I stopped building the roof after realizing that none of the saplings have grown. Any ideas why?
99% sure its a bug of some kind since my other birch tree farm directly above it is growing properly, although with jack o lanterns instead of lanterns but I doubt it actually affects anything.
EDIT: using bonemeal does cause them to grow however

Birch trees won't grow if they have any blocks next to them, this includes half blocks like stone slabs. They also need at least 6 blocks above to grow.
So you will have to change your model to this: (D = dirt)
If bonemeal works, maybe its just the height limitation. The wiki says:
Both birch and spruce trees require 9 blocks of vertical space above the sapling to grow regularly (10 is more efficient for growth). Both spruce and birch grow with less space, but not as regularly. Like other saplings, they must receive light level 8 or better to grow.
So maybe a tree will grow at six blocks, but its just very slow.
The light level is too low; I read "y=6" as saying that they are 6 blocks off the ground (as opposed to literally being at y=6), which means that the light level at ground level directly below them is 10 if there are 5 air blocks between the ground and lantern and the light level at the sapling is only 4 (the light level decreases by 5 below the lantern and 1 for each step by taxicab distance along a diagonal towards the sapling, or just 2 per block along a diagonal), which is too low (in older versions most plants, including saplings, would uproot in low light levels but for some reason this was removed in 1.7. Bonemeal bypasses the light level check so even back then you could bonemeal a sapling in the dark and it would grow):
A 9 8 7 8 9 A
9 8 7 6 7 8 9
8 7 6 5 6 7 8
7 6 5 4 5 6 7
8 7 6 5 6 7 8
9 8 7 6 7 8 9
A 9 8 7 8 9 A
(A = 10 in hex)
You'll need to move the lanterns down by 4 blocks, or no more than 1 block of air between them and the ground (i.e. at eye level), which will give a light level of 8 at the sapling (I presume that the half-slabs are to prevent mobs from spawning, which is a dead giveaway that it is too dark as they spawn at 7 or less).

this is completely wrong. wiki says they can grow in a hole 1 block high. and I tested my alternate tree farm but covering a particular tree with slabs all around and it still grew

the light at the sapling is 8 or 9. my farm is really at y=6. the lanterns are level with the saplings.

perhaps, but as i said, half of my farm has no height limit since I stopped building the roof halfway the moment I saw that it wasn't growing.
im starting to think that the saplings are bugged if one plants them too near to bedrock.....
Do crops grow? The only other possible explanation for saplings only growing if bonemealed is that the gamerule randomTickSpeed was somehow set to 0, which will disable random ticks and crop/sapling growth; otherwise, if a sapling isn't going to grow by itself it also won't grow if bonemealed, with the exception of a insufficient light level.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
