I am having problems understanding anvil mechanics based on the wiki post.
The upper and lower half of the attachment show the two different permutation of combining a
Damaged Unbreaking 2, Silk Touch 1, Mending 1
with a
Undamaged Unbreaking 3, Fortune 3, Efficiency 5
pickaxe.
Based on the mechanics explained in the wiki post,
I would expect the Silk Touch is sacrifice permutation to cost 2 * Unbreaking 3 + 8 * Silk Touch 1 + 4 * Mending 1 = 18 levels, but is actually 15.
I would expect the Fortune is sacrifice permutation to cost 2 * Unbreaking 3 + 4 * Forunte 3 + 1 * Efficiency 5 + 2 repair cost = 25 levels levels, but is actually 18.
This also doesn't take into consideration that there was prior work penalty somewhere on these pickaxes (the Mending one for sure). And even considering some linear offset these numbers still don't add up.
So what am I misunderstanding about these Anvil mechanics? Is the information in the wiki obsolete (didn't try it with earlier versions yet)?
I'm not at all well versed in anvil costs but the way I read it, it's:
First one: 6 for the Unbreaking (2 per level times 3 levels (it's called a multiplier after all)) + 1 for the Silk Touch since it was incompatible + 4 for the Mending = 11 leaving 4 for the PWP
Second: 6 for the Unbreaking + 1 for the Fortune (incompatible) + 5 for the Efficiency (1 times 5 levels) + 2 repair =14, again leaving 4 for the PWP

In the "Costs for combining enchantments" section on the Wiki page it says:
"
Add one level for every incompatible enchantment on the target (In Java Edition).
If the enchantment is compatible with the existing enchantments on the target:
For Java Edition, add the final level of the enchantment on the resulting item multiplied by the multiplier from the table below."
So, 1 XP-level for incompatible enchantments and (Enchantment Levels times Multiplier) XP-levels for the compatible ones.

The incompatibility in question is between enchantments, enchantments that can't be applied to the item type don't cost anything.

Just testing.
That is quite right.
Either way, you are paying 6 levels for unbreaking 3 (since both items got unbreaking)
You are paying 1 level for either ST or Fortune - as it can't be applied to target.
And you are paying either 5 for Eff5 or 4 for Mending.
If the target is a damaged item, it adds 2 levels.
Prior work penalty: Anvil uses the higher penalty of the two items used.
Here it appears to be 3 - means one of those picks has been on the anvil twice. (penalties go 1,3,7,15,31)
So that would mean either 11+3 = 14 one way or 12+2+3 = 17 the other way.
No I see in your screenshots you got a cursor in the name box.
Pretty sure once you click in the name box of the target item, that adds another level for renaming. Thus, 15 and 18.
Thanks, that totally makes sense, honestly I cannot reconstruct my own thought process from what I have written.
