Do you prefer having a Totem of Undying in your offhand or a shield? If there’s something else you like to have in your offhand, say what it is below. I prefer a Totem.
I prefer to have food am not a pvp player so neither a shield or totem is something i need to have all the times in my offhand. The only time i use shield is when i hund shulkers and the totems i find no use in them.
I think the totem of undying would be more beneficial
the shield has a durability rating, totem of undying does not and when used correctly it will save you from an otherwise lethal attack.
If you're down to half a heart, it's still possible to be killed even with the shield blocking, if splash potions are involved or from environmental attacks.
I've never liked the durability of iron items so why would I use a shield? perhaps in the End against Shulkers it would help,
but in the Overworld? not worth my time. Even against Witches you can just shoot them with a bow from a safe distance
and no harm will come to you.
Having a build playstyle I tend to like investing my iron on more permanent items like lanterns.
On my current world it's mostly PVE, limited PVP in arena sessions only.
I understand the shield was never meant to be permanent without mending,
but durability 336? outside of PVP it doesn't look like this would help much.
I'd choose totems. Shields can protect you, but they have durability. If a shield breaks anytime, it's over, you're dead unless you can switch to a totem in a millisecond. Totems on the other hand, revive you from death, and has regeneration and positive effects.
Shield all the way. With unbreaking and mending of course. A single shield can save your life a hundred times but a totem only once. And how much time do u wanna spend chasing totems? Plus carrying a totem rather than a shield increases the likelihood of dying anyway

Good point, but if you die with a shield, then your dead for good. Plus, with a raid farm you can easily get hundreds of totems. And if something happens like an elytra breaking, then you’ll be able to survive with a totem in circumstances you wouldn’t with a shield. Although early game a shield is better.

But you can farm totems of undying and theoretically end up with as many as you want.
and they can be stored in shulker boxes.
You can get to cover before equipping new ones in your hotbar.
Shields have limited durability points before they need to be repaired, and even with mending it is still possible to take a fatal blow with them.
But if you activate a totem of undying when low on health, you have enough time to escape, you not only defy death temporarily, but you also regenerate all your health as well as that status for 45 seconds upon activation, with 5 seconds absorb status.
The shield will not grant you any status affects or death defying, once you take the fatal hit you're finished.
The shield has its uses against Shulkers as I said before, but I wouldn't say it was a great item, far from it.
Don't even get me started about Creepers, who can ambush you, meaning the shield wouldn't matter.
By the time the Creeper has detonated from behind you it is already too late, which is why the shields suck for this.
Also a shield it's so much more useful in an UHC if your time is limited and your chance of getting a totem is very low. When you can't regenerate hearts, blocking skeleton arrows and creper explosions is so much useful.
Fair enough but with a good xp farm, u can make dying a non issue enough to get by without a raid farm. I suppose if u go to that much effort and have unlimited tokens, everything kinda becomes irrelevant. Especially if u have shulker chests.
I would still prefer a shield personally for blocking arrows and other attacks. Maybe I just like having a bit of challenge left in the game but I rarely die anyway. For me at least, a raid farm would be overkill because there is nothing much to gain from them besides token and I don't really need them.

Same here, but I've got armour with blast protection 4 on my chest plate, so the shield is pointless now. Creepers are still a threat but not enough to justify wasting an off-hand slot on a shield, when I could be carrying arrows for my bow instead.
Also shields will only help against Creeper explosions if you block it from the front and if you do it at the right time.
They don't help if Creepers ambush you from behind, which is the most common reason why people would be damaged or killed by them.

I've never even crafted a shield; I've got a few tokens on my old/"real" world, safely stored in a chest. I *think* there may be one displayed in an item frame, but it's been a couple of years since i've played in that world... If I ever go to the End, I suppose I'll take one with.
Most of the time, I keep a stack of torches in my off-hand. Occaisionally if I'm out hunting at night I'll keep my sword in my main hand and my bow in my off-hand; and of course if I'm fishing/breeding animals/trading with villagers for mending exp my off-hand gets whatever tool I'm repairing.
I hadn't really thought much about creepers. A good bow or a knock back sword is all u need for them. If they are exploding, u are doing it wrong bro. They should be dead before then.
The knockback from skeletons annoys me though. It is mainly because of them that I carry the shield plus ghasts, witches and illagers. And it useful in melee generally. Stops u getting poisoned by husks and cave spiders, gored by hoglins, hacked by Vindicators and so on. I don't get why u wouldn't want the option to block attacks rather than just taking hits and going through totems. I even use my shield if I have to go afk briefly and it has saved me plenty of times
That's why I always keep the Totem inbetween my Bow and Sword. I can use the scroll wheel to go over a single space, then hit F to switch my offhand item. Takes just a moment. All you gotta do is keep an eye on your shield and switch the moment it hits red, just to be safe.
If you're able to obtain a totem of undying, you probably have iron armor at the very least; meaning that shields aren't that useful since the armor will be tanking most of the damage for you anyways. The shield is very useful but once you're able to get a totem of undying, the shield isn't needed until you use the totem.
and as we've established although it isn't the end all be all, the Totem of Undying grants stat boosts, temporary as they may be they are still miles more helpful than the shield could ever hope to be, excluding a few extremes such as Shulkers which can unleash a deadly levitation effect that can deal massive fall damage to the player if they didn't have status of Slow Falling, Elytra or a pool of water to land in.
Shields can repel the projectiles of Shulkers preventing the Levitation effect in the first place,
Totem of Undying could save players from dying this way but it wouldn't be reliable because the Totem of Undying's effects could wear off by the time the player reaches the ground.
In most cases though Totem of Undying is superior,

HMM YES
As far as I know you can enchant a shield with mending and unbreaking if durability is an issue.
Problem here is that totems weren't supposed to be renewable, so they of course are more powerful than shields
Shields are honestly so good for their cost.

I'm a poor melee fighter - so hiding behind a shield while slowly withdrawing that's my usual tactic.
