So I built a slime farm. The second one actually, the first one (other world) worked like a charm. But no slimes will spawn.
Chunk is a slime chunk according to chunkbase. Levels below 40. Built farm using cobblestone halfslabs with jack-o-lanterns in between, deep ocean biome. 3 blocks empty space between halfslabs. Other monsters spawn in the few caves nearby. Haven't cleared the ocean above, but this shouldn't be required for any slimes to farm, should it? Went to observer mode and waited for a few minutes, maybe 30 blocks away, so I'm not within 24 blocks of the spawn platforms. Java 16.5.
What am I missing? Is there something that blocks slimes from spawning?

Losing patience here. It's a little private server. Copied the world and switched it to vanilla, no change. Cloned the slime spawn area a gazillion times to cover 6x6 chunks or more, and saw a single slime jumping, as if to mock me - near a slime chunk but not in it. (Might have spawned in there and jumped out.) So technically it seems as if slimes _can_ spawn, but something prevents them from doing so.
There is an ocean monument about 80 blocks away. Could this affect slime spawning? Apart from that, nothing but deep ocean in the vicinity.
-Make sure you're using top slabs and not bottom slabs, otherwise the mobs wont spawn.
Yep, that's what I did. Top slabs, went to small afk house over the spawn area (just a few blocks above the ocean surface), switched to survival, waited, nothing. In fact this is a survival world, I only switched to spectator to debug.
I think you need to put in a fair amount of work spawn proofing the surrounding area (within 128 blocks of your position) for a slimefarm to be effective.
As I understand it slimes spawn less frequently than other mobs so it's easy for the mob cap to be filled before they try to spawn.
How many mobs are there in the loaded area?
(Press F3 to get the debug screen and check the second number after "E" (on the fifth line or so))

That's why I chose deep ocean, less area to spawnproof. Not a lot of caves around, almost all filled with water except for a ravine. Seems that for some reason the spawn rate is really low nevertheless. Mobs are usually between 125 and 135 if I'm in my AFK area, shouldn't be too bad, right?
As this is a fairly new survival world, these are just baby steps to get my first slime. Once I have enough I can do a world eater and set up farms in a cleared area... So it doesn't have to be super efficient.
I dug out a bit more and higher, added some slabs outside the slime chunk, raised my afk platform to y=120 and managed to get almost 200 slimeballs in 90 minutes. Pretty bad, but still hurray?

Depends on what the mobs are, the hostile mob cap is 70.
I think that quardians use the hostile mob cap, I'd suggest checking if there is a spot where you could afk that's more than 128 blocks from the monument but still in range of your slime farm. (Unless you're planning on clearing the monument anyway.)
If you need help calculating the distance in 3D you could post the coordinates here, though you may get quicker results from an online site.

Oceans spawn drowned. Drowned are hostile mobs, just like slimes are. Slimes are rarer than drowned (and guardians for that matter). Does a deep-ocean slime farm still sound like a great idea at this point, considering you were using the water to cut down on the spawnproofing work?
Well, the fact that I plan to build a world eater might have given you a clue that I care about spawn rates
But at some point you have to believe somebody. I saw a youtube video claiming that deep ocean is a good place for a slime farm, so I went for it. Needless to say, next time I won't go to that trouble.
If the video was from before mid 2018 the drowned wouldn't have been added yet.
An Ocean Eater would be easier to build than a World Eater.
Just build a wall at eater end and have a flying machine go back and forth between them.
It does of course have to be lowered every time it switches direction but no need to dupe T.N.T.
And of course you'd need to work around islands and seamounts but for open water it should work.
No, the video was 16.x and he mentioned drowned, but that they are not much of a problem. Either he was wrong or the spawn rate was changed. Doesn't matter now
Haven't decided on my world eater yet. Ilmango builds one that has cleaners pushing water and lava out of the way, so you only have to care about obsidian. But maybe I'll go for something simpler. So much to do in a new survival world and so little time Now with the first slime I set up a small XP farm (cactus/bamboo) and sugar cane. May look into an ice farm next for all the blue ice I'll need for my water transports... Then comes a decent storage, and then finally I'll be free to explore new options

Drowneds have high spawnrates in river biomes but low rates in ocean.
Slimes defenetly have higher spawnrates then drowneds in ocean biomes.
Unless the hostile cap is filled and slimes have a chance, they spawn.
Ilmango made a detailed video about drowneds spawning. I think it was about his latest drowned farm.
I would say, that even in river biomes, drowneds don't have higher spawnrates then slimes.
I have been testing drowned farms in a river voidworld and was a bit disappointed.
You can compare both mobs easy on voidworlds, if you give them the same space to spawn.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q

-Mobs don't spawn when you're in spectator mode
-Make sure you're using top slabs and not bottom slabs, otherwise the mobs wont spawn.
Also, are you sure the seed is correct in chunkbase? And the coordinates -/+ correct?
Seed is copy&paste from Minecraft /seed output. Don't see how this could be wrong.
Coordinates are triple checked. That was my first idea, that I messed up my coordinates. Xaeros Minimap agrees that it's a slime chunk, btw.
