So a few days ago, I started a new world, in which I got some diamond equipment which I'm planning to upgrade to netherite pretty soon. However, I seem to be in quite the dilemma as to which is the most efficient mining method for ancient debris.
My base is located in a plains biome, with a desert nearby, so I have two options: beds, as I have sheep that I could make a farm with, and TNT, as I can find gunpowder/TNT from desert temples, and gather loads of sand for crafting it, and also have better mob spawning rates at night potentially.
However, I've been learning about the pros and cons of both options, as while one is much cheaper to craft, the other seems to be less risky, and so on. I just think that regular strip mining would be quite boring for that matter, especially since my pickaxes could eventually break, as I don't have Mending yet. I also don't wanna bother myself with making a mob farm seeing as I'm kinda early into my world, and I might not have enough resources for that matter too.
So, what are you guys' opinions on these two options, and what would you recommend?
The only time when you may not want to build a mob farm because of lack-of-resources issues is when you have to punch wood. Once you've progressed beyond this stage, you've very definitely gotten enough resources.
I prefer beds over TNT because its way easier to make but it's just so much slower than tnt. You might wanna do a bit of both or make an creeper farm. I definitely reccomend tnt over beds though
I got my Netherite on a server with beds. Gunpowder isn't much of a problem (one of the players there have a mob farm), but it's the sand I'm worried about. I'd rather use it for glass instead.
Hello again guys. Sorry if I haven't been responding lately, as it's been quite some time since I've first made this thread, and I've been quite busy IRL, but either way, thank you all for trying to help.
So, guess I'll just try to make a creeper farm once I have gathered all the resources for it, although the process of collecting them seems like a big pain...For the time being, I could always use beds for debris mining, and obtain fire resistance potions from piglin bartering to keep me safe during that mining session (especially since I have yet to find a Nether fortress in my world and therefore don't have any blaze powder/nether wart...The process of finding one is gonna be painful as well :/)
Little bit of an unrelated question, however: If I were to build my creeper farm in a deep ocean biome since I live next to an ocean as well, should I worry about cave lighting the nearby areas? And should I worry about drowned and phantoms taking up the mob cap at night time, or do they not count towards it? (The 2 creeper farm designs I've watched require AFK-ing at y=100+, by the way.)
For the mobs, build the farm up in the sky and do that so you're 128 blocks above sea level (y=62) while afk'ing (this brings the ideal afk point to y=190). In this way no mobs other than phantoms can spawn except those in the farm.
Beds are overpowered precisely because of their cheap TNT capability which has been used to defeat the Ender Dragon and of course bed mining for ancient debris. I am actually surprised Mojang hasn't nerfed them yet so their blast cannot affect mobs/bosses, or be used for faster than intended mining of ancient debris for netherrite. I don't feel like beds should be used in the nether, but I also do think Mojang should disable their explosive effect in the Nether and instead just have them not work when players attempt to use them in the Nether.
Well they want the beds to blow up if they're used in the nether. It is "intentional game design" afterall.
Beds already provided enough benefits in the game with just their respawn and switch to daytime mechanics. Why do they need to act as cheap TNT inside the End or Nether? it literally makes no sense. You can't make explosives with wool and wood, it doesn't work like that, and it shouldn't.
Auto-wool sheep farm is your free wool right there, and it's just a few planks for the other part of a bed.
Why on earth would you waste resources (especially Sand) on TNT? Think of all the concrete you could of made.
Because sand too is renewable thanks to trades. If you have a reasonably generous trading system setup then you can afford to expend some stacks of sand on TNT without ruining your local desert.
Indeed, sand is renewable since you can trade 8 regular sand and/or 4 red sand with wandering traders. However, those despawn after a while, and I don't think they restock their trades after them being locked. So I don't think a trading system would work on them...On the other hand, if I ever need glass, librarian villagers are a thing.
Besides, I'm not that much of a builder myself, so concrete isn't a priority for me at the moment.
I'll see what I can do as soon as I'll be able to get back on my world since I haven't been able to play on it lately.

it is nice to be able to get glass from trades, but unfortunately trades have a cool-down which is a bad mechanic which I am not in defense of, as it punishes players for actually taking the time to setup a complex trade system, but this is Mojang's game, not mine.
There shouldn't be any cool-down on trades, certain trades should be expensive yes, but having the trades lock up after a certain number of them are done each day per villager is just stupid, and it discourages players from putting in the work to make large farms or crop fields to trade with them, or in the case of stone masions, stone from mining.
It's good that wandering traders sell sand though because it means you can replace what was lost from Creeper explosions or what was stolen by Endermen.
Getting sand from trades isn't efficient - much better to just use a desert as a sand quarry. You can just fill up your inventory in minutes with an Efficiency III shovel or higher. Bring a few shulker boxes with you, and you can get enough sand for all your concrete, TNT, and glass endeavors. The time spent collecting all that sand would still be faster than the time it would take most farms to net the same amount of resources. So I don't see any real "wasteful use" of such a common and easy-to-stockpile item.

I've been terraforming a desert for my town builds in my current survival world on normal difficulty with friends on a custom server, so I have been collecting sand, its abundance doesn't change the fact it isn't renewble (in natural form, excluding wandering traders) though so I wouldn't exactly waste them on TNT where I'd never get them back.
It certainly doesn't make a whole lot of sense to make TNT with them to make tools which would inevitably break either in my honest opinion.
TNT isn't just risky in terms of how much damage it can do to players or passive mobs, it's an outright waste of resources if used inappropriately.
I've not been a big fan of TNT since the beginning when I started playing this game, and this was before wandering traders were available to give you sand for emeralds, back when villager trades were first introduced renewable sand was impossible except for one technicality of it being available in glass form from villagers.

The only time when you may not want to build a mob farm because of lack-of-resources issues is when you have to punch wood. Once you've progressed beyond this stage, you've very definitely gotten enough resources.
1. Build this gunpowder farm:
(I did 2 layers, but you do what is best for you).
2. Afk the farm for 1 hour.
3. Collect sand.
4. Craft TNT.
5. Get a full set of netherite armour, tools, and weapons in under an hour(that's what I did anyway)
Make sure to place the tnt at levels 14-15 for best results
I prefer beds over TNT because its way easier to make but it's just so much slower than tnt. You might wanna do a bit of both or make an creeper farm. I definitely reccomend tnt over beds though

For phantoms, they do not spawn if you do afk with a block which blocks light on top of your head (reference: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Phantom)

I recommend beds because they are easy to craft. Also, it is just more fun than TNT.

Also, exploding beds are one of the main weapons to do speed runs and kill the dragon
TNT is faster, and ends up yielding more ancient debris than beds.

Hey all,
I'm strip mining in the Nether, but have not hit any debris yet.
I'm playing Bedrock 1.17, on an Xbox. My feet at y=14, head at 15.
I've burned through a dozen iron pickaxe easily. Nothing yet. Cutting a swath 10 or 11 wide.
Any thoughts?
