I'm playing 1.12, and I just want one skeleton skull. I already tried digging 80 holes, putting one creeper in each hole, and waiting for lightning to hit one of them, but it turns out that pushing 80 creepers into holes without exploding any of them is very difficult and frustrating. Do any of you know any easier or faster ways?
Yes I know that 1.12 is the version right before channeling. No I still refuse to update. I like my item ID numbers.
I acquired my first Zombie / Skeleton and Creeper skulls pre-tridents and channeling, but as you probably surmise, gettting a charged creeper is tricky. I got mine from a large area i flattened with an observation tower in the middle and most of the underground area lit up so i got a lot of surface spawns, and when a thunderstorm happened I raced to the tower to monitor the area. But it took ages to get my first charged creeper.
As for the pit idea, why not have several larger pits. As they fill with mobs, use an invisibility poition to enter the pits and name tag the creepers without them detecting you. Over time you will get the other mobs despawn but the creepers will not. Obviously you'll need quite a few tags, but once you get one a CC in one of the pits, wiat for a skeleton to spawn in it, kill any other mobs so you only have the skelly and the CC and effect the detonation...

If I'm not digging small pits, why do I need pits at all? Maybe I should just fence off a big field, name tag all the creepers in the field, and kill the other monsters. Eventually I should have so many creepers that all monsters stop spawning.

Yeah, a fenced area would be just as good, but having one big area may pose problems, as the Creepers may congregate in a few areas, and be unevenly disperesed. In mutilple smaller areas, this may still occur, but in theory you'll get a better blanket coverage. Plus I imagine after you've named a few in a massive single pen, maye be harder to nametag the unnamed ones as the numbers grow ...

After many hours of name tagging creepers, I finally got a few charged ones. Thanks to everyone who helped me.
