I have almost 1000 kelp plantation, partly horizontal and partly vertical.
With 9 smokers, automated for dried kelp, I am not getting good amount of kelp as one assumes with 1000 plantation.
My first assumption is that you need to be around for your plantation to grow. Is it correct? Where am I going wrong and how can I be benefited most from my Kelp farm?
Chunks need to be loaded in order for crops to grow within them, but I can't confirm this is the case for kelp. Feel free to confirm or deny this. Likely the problem is you receiving lower rolls on kelp height.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
You have to be within 128 blocks (circular) of the center of a chunk in order for it to receive random block updates, no matter what your render distance is (unless it is less than 8-10? I know that 1.6.4 always ticks chunks regardless of the view distance but that may have since changed to avoid loading more chunks than intended, though IMO the server-side view distance should not be able to go below 10, which would also avoid other issues):

I'm pretty sure plants only grow with a player nearby.
It's not enough for the chunks to be loaded, spawn chunks for instance aren't supposed to grow crops when players aren't there.
Just testing.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
