Hey everyone! A couple of friends and myself started playing on a server lately and started to build a slime farm. Using some of the awesome help already on this forum, we were able to get it up and running and working efficiently. However, we recently noticed that it stopped working. Upon further inspection, the cause was that slimes were no longer spawning in our farm.
Some replies to common issues I've seen on the forum:
Our farm is located below Y:40 with several layers down to bedrock (each 3 block high).
Each layer is lit up, I've personally checked and every spot in the chunk has a light level of at least 8.
We've created a duplicate world in creative and Have checked that there are no caves in the slime chunk above Y:40.
The farm used to work and did spawn slimes, so we do believe we've found a slime chunk.
Some of our thoughts/relative facts:
Slime farm is in a mesa biome.
Design we used:
Seed Number: 307378363095822
Slime chunk includes X:775 Y:1575
We were playing in 20w20b when the farm was working. We recently updated to pre4, but we're fairly confident the farm stopped working before we made the update.
We've built some other farms close by, but none that involve hostile mobs. Only chickens, cows, and villagers.
We created another world on creative with the same seed and were able to spawn slimes on pre4 in the same chunk.
Our base is around 4 chunks away from the slime farm.
We've AFK'd for a while at bedrock within the slime chunk and see no slimes, this used to work.
Is this a public server with lots of people on or just you?
Maybe there are more people online so more mobs elsewhere?
Can you check the numbers of mobs in loaded chunks?
Using F3 or server commands. You'd have to subtract the number of animals since they don't share the same mob cap as hostile mobs.
Have you checked the seed recently?
It's a long shot but I've heard of servers somehow getting messed up and changing seeds.
Checking for caves specifically in the same chunk and AFKing in the same chunk both suggest you might not completely understand spawning.
For maximum spawning in your slime farm you'd have to eliminate hostile mob spawning in a 128 block sphere around all online players, whether in the same chunk or not.
Also, AFKing at the bottom of the slime farm will disable more than half of it, mobs won't spawn within 24 blocks of a player.
Better to AFK at least 25 blocks above or to the side of the farm.
Thanks for your reply. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the F3. I know how to pull up the menu, but don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Here's a screenshot of me on top of the slime chunk.
Ok that makes sense about the multiple players and spawning. However, I've been on the server when no one else is on and still don't have a single slime spawn. My intuition tells me that even if hostile mobs were getting capped out, we would still see a few slimes here and there, but we've had nothing for at least a week now.
We checked the seed recently and /seed spits out [0] which may be an issue.

Just testing.

Thanks so much for all of your advice!
That's very interesting... the /seed spits out [0]? I've never seen that before.
