This thread is ment for those who want to know everything helpfull about how to survive in the minecraft overworld and those who want to share their knowledge about how to survive there.
There is no shame on researching about how to craft things.
I do that nearly daily. No joke, i don't have enough space for every recipe in my brain.
If you are completly new to minecraft stop reading this thread instantly.
You will have lot more fun with minecraft discovering the basics yourself.
Get Started
Well yes, punch a tree.
Craft a wooden pickaxe and farm enough cobblestone for the following things:
-stonepickaxe
-stoneaxe
-furnace
Optional:
-Stoneshovel
(That depends on your playstyle.
There is no block (as far as i know) you can not farm without a shovel unless it requires silktouch)
At this point i suggest to not craft a sword of materials less then iron.
You could make use of those if you have build yourself a mobfarm or if you want to chop down bamboo.
It's also a good tool for farming cobwebs in mineshafts.
For the damage output a stoneaxe is good enough untill you are covered in full iron armory.
The difference of those weapons is that a sword can damage more than 1 enemy at the same time.
The axe is more usefull for singletargets or in pvp becouse it deals slightly more damage to a single target & can disable shields for a short time.
Unless you are farming bamboo or cobwebs you should not need a stone sword at this point.
Shelter
If you are a chicken (just like me) you can craft a bed and skip night time over and over again as a homeless untill you are covered in full iron. The bed is the most powerfull item in the game wich can even be abused to detonate blocks or kill mobs. I won't explain any further about this.
If you don't have a bed by now you should try to hide underground or at least be surrounded by blocks that disable mobs to see you. There are some transparent blocks & (since i'm german & don't know all the words) items that allow you to see the outer world. The best way to have a look might be a trapdoor or a regular door. Made out of oak, acacia or jungle wood. If you managed to smelt sand at this point you can use glass instead.
Food
Please don't kill all animals near your world spawn. You might thank me later for this.
Instead while you are going to punch your first tree and stuff you might as well punch some grass to get wheat seeds as well.
Also you can kill some pigs.
If you want to ride them later, make sure to at least keep 2 of them.
I, for my self don't think pigs are imortant at all.
You can lure chickens with wheat seeds towards you, pushing them into a hole and cover yourself & them up.
If you go afk then, you can get a full inventory of eggs, wich provide you with an unessecarry powerfull foodfarm startup.
Chickenfarms are dangerous, please keep that in mind. If you don't know why jet, you might as well discover that your self.
Sometimes i think it's funny to break minecraft & my pc...
For the following food there are a few thaughts i want to share with you:
-Golden Carrot
-Steak
-Cooked Pork Chop
-Carrot
-Bread
-Baked Potato
-Apple (Golden Apple / Enchanted Golden Apple)
-Melon Slice
-Dried Kelp
Here is what i think about them:
-Golden Carrot
Has by far the most saturation in 1 stack you can craft if you know how to get the ingredients. (Golden Appels have more saturation but...)
-Steak
You won't get along this if you want to enchant your armory or tools. It's the most common and beloved but not the most powerfull food.
-Cooked Porkchop
same saturation as steak, not a bad choice at all.
-Carrot
If you can't upgrade it to a Golden Carrot it's still a good choice, since you don't have to cook it.
-Bread
The most compact food you can carry around. Also my favorit. Harvest as much wheat as you can & craft the wheat into hay bales. If you have the patience you won't starve at all.
(Nothing can top the saturation of a stack of hay bales)
-Baked Potato
It's okay i think. You have to cook it and that gives you exp. That is if you have the fuel for the furnace. Baked on a campfire they are free of cost but don't give you exp. Most players like them, i do not.
-The Apples
If you are smart or smart & lucky you got some apples on your first day chopping oak trees wich crownes didn't connect to other trees. Apples can be upgradet to Golden Apples using Gold Ingots. Such a Golden Apple can be a usefull powerup for dangerous situations & Bossfights. If you don't have a Goldfarm or want to cure Zombievillagers you should try to avoid using/crafting this costy food.
Enchanted Golden Apples can not be craftet. They are rare, i won't tell you where to find them. BUT!: They serve as a Banner Pattern. Don't eat all of them. Keep at last one for Banners.
-Melon Slice
They are something elese. For me they are just ingredients for potions but if you spawn near by or into a jungle you might as well pick them as starters food. I don't think of them as usefull food but they aren't bad as a startup.
(I happen to know of full & of half automatic melon-/pumkin- farms. I just like the way these plants grow. I like the halfautomatic farms more, but this is going offtopic)
;-)
-Dried Kelp
Should be your last resort dish. It is usefull as fuel for furnaces if you know how to automize the harvesting process. Please don't dry it on a campfire. I was desperet once, you should realy try hard to avoid such an embarassing situation. You can follow this guide but please don't follow my foodsteps...
With that beeing said you should try to get all food resources yourself & make your own thoughts about them.
First Iron Ores
What to do?
I have 2 answers:
Bucket or shield
The shield obviously enables you to explore dangerous caves where you can get lots of iron & coal.
The Bucket is for the defensive (chicken like me) players.
You can build youreself a so called endless watersource underground with a vegetable farm.
Or for the explorers of you who want to cross mountains fast without breaking blocks.
Please keep in mind, that water can freeze in cold biomes. I expierienced an embaressing death becouse of this...
Iron / General Mining
If you managed to survive this far there is barely much left i can give you on your way through the Minecraft overworld. But here is what i know about the underground.
Below hight 11 you will enter many lava pools. Please be carefull underground.
Most Players recommand having a waterbucket in the hotbar but i think a stack of cobblestone in the offhand is by far a better solution. BLOCK OFF ANY LAVA IN FRONT OF YOU. Don't even take burn damage! Please don't dig straight down & don't dig any further down then hight 11.
Iron, the most important resource of the overworld can be found anywhere below sea-level.
That is below hight 64. Check the F3 Screen for more details ingame.
Sadly there is no such thing as "best hight" to farm iron. The quickest way to get a few ores is to explore some caves from the overworld. Believe me, i researched this for a long time. If you don't like farming iron check out thoese so called "Iron Farms" on google / youtube. I wont blame you. I like them too.
The best hight to mine "the real stuff" is 11.
-Lapis Lazuli Ore
Are generated at hight 30 or lower & can be mined using a stone pickaxe. That is the one you need to enchant your stuff. The best hight to mine especially this stuff seems to be 14.
following ores require at least iron pickaxe:
-Gold ore (In mesa biomes you can farm nuts of them around hight 63 & below)
can be found below hight 32.
-Redstone Ore
can be found below hight 17.
(Is's not rare at all. I like redstone. I like building redstone machines. The Ore may be a little rare but you will get more of this stuff then iron or coal.)
-Diamond ore
below hight 16
(super rare within mountain biome (Dont mine for diamonds within mountains!!))
-Emerald Ore
below hight 32
(Please be carefull about this ore. If you find this ore to be pritty handle it with silktouch enchantment. You can find about 8 of them in 1 chunk if you mine within a mountain biome, where diamond ore tends to be super rare. Other then mining, the best way to get emeralds (NOT THE ORE) is to simply trade with villagers.)
If it comes to stripmining i can give you nothing usefull. I have seen many tutorials on this. Anyway i think you should mine the way you like, there is nothing esle to know from me.
Offtopic/mods/ect
Aside from mining guides i have a few suggestions of mods wich i think you might find usefull. They do not alter minecraft itself, but the way you expierience it.
I use fabric modloader and following mods:
-Optifabric
-Light Overlay
-durabilityviewer
I am very sure you can find all about fabric and those mods via this forum or using google ect. However they are not necessary to play minecraft at all. I think of them as supportive mods.
If you have any questions or suggestins on this thread or the toppic, or you want to ad anything usefull, feel free to do so.
Alternatively: Instead of worrying about what tools to craft at the beginning, mine 20 cobblestone and use it to craft a full set of stone tools and a furnace with one leftover. You said not to worry about swords until you can craft iron, but I'd argue there are more important items to craft with iron like shields, buckets and armor. Stone tools are easily replaceable yet effective enough, whereas a new player isn't going to understand the intricacies of mining at specific heights to maximize their ore gain, so they should prioritize the important stuff.

Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
