Introduction:
This is a Singleplayer Survival Journal for a world I created on April 8th, 2020. I started this world on Infdev (20100618), which is an older version of Minecraft, and plan to slowly upgrade it to the current day version. I will document any bugs or glitches I encounter along the way. I’ve done a world like this twice previously in the past and enjoyed doing a playthrough like this quite a lot. This one will differ from my older series in that I will be taking a far more creative and ambitious approach this time. The difficulty is set on hard. These posts will follow side-by-side with my Let's Play Series.
The Rules:
-Each version will be played strictly on the Hard difficulty
-No mods or duplication or x-ray glitches (Exception: Optifine)
-Each time I make an upgrade in the Minecraft Development Cycle, I will leave behind all blocks, items and tools behind at the old base and start off in new terrain with a clean slate. This will happen when I upgrade from Infdev to Alpha 1.0, Alpha 1.2.6 to Beta 1.0 and Beta 1.8.1 to Release 1.0
-No removing older builds. I can move them, improve on them and add on to them but I cannot remove or destroy them entirely. They are there to stay.
Q&A:
Q: Why did you start on Infdev?
A: I’m addicted to Minecraft and all of its history. I did a lot of research and watched a lot of videos in order to get as much information on these historical versions as possible. Infdev (20100327) is the earliest version of Minecraft you can start a world on that will carry over to the Post-Release 1.0 Minecraft. Any previous versions of Infdev do not have the ability to save the world and the only way you can get an Indev (or Classic) world to modern day Minecraft is through using a third-party program like MCEDIT.
I started on Infdev (20100618) instead mainly because it’s the only version of Infdev in the launcher.
Q: How long will you be staying on each version?
A: One of the reasons I restarted is because I felt like I was updating too quickly and didn’t really get a chance to explore the many updates I played. I also felt like I didn’t build to my heart’s content and a lot of my builds and ideas felt small in scope. Instead, I have a list of goals I will complete for each version before I decide to upgrade and they are all reasonable. However, they will be a lot larger in scale and creativity than my previous worlds.
Q. Why do you skip some updates?
This is not a world I created to play literally every single update of Minecraft. If you look at all the old changelogs for Infdev, Alpha and some of Beta, you will find that many of them have updates that fix bugs or add very little (or only update things for multiplayer). It would be completely pointless and mundane for me to play some of these versions.
I spawned near a beach on a block of sand. Quickly, I collect some wood and create our first wooden tools. I dig a block down in the sand to mark the very first block we ever spawned on in this world. This is something I do for every single world I create as I always like creating statues or monuments that mark our first spawn. I place my first chest and my first crafting table right next to it.
A few dozen blocks away from our spawn, I find a really nice cave that goes down deep. I venture down there and collect some coal and iron ore. I really like how the lake flows into it and I plan on building something here soon. I’m a sucker for these cool naturally generated caves.
I gathered a fair amount of cobblestone from the cave, created my first furnace and placed it down near my first spawn. I built up a cobblestone tower to mark our first spawn and place a sign down to signify it. It’s important to note that the height limit is currently limited to 128 (instead of the 256 limit we have today). The signs are also larger and cannot be placed on the side of blocks yet.

Infdev (20100618) (Entry #2)
The only passive mobs currently in the game are sheep and pigs. Due to this, leather armor is instead called cloth armor in these updates. It is made with wool instead of leather. To get wool in these versions, all you need to do is punch a sheep once. One of my goals this update is to get all tools and armor sets created and placed in our chests at Spawn Tower. I went out and collected enough wool to make our first armor set! This is what our chest looks like so far. We did a lot of mining and got our hands on some stone and iron. We also ran into some spiders and zombies. There are no chickens in this version so the only way to get feather is through zombies. They don't drop rotten flesh and instead drop feathers. We got enough string and feathers to make us a bow and some arrows (Note the recipe for arrows; it uses iron instead of flint)! We also start the beginning of our Infdev Base. I decided to transform the cave into our base as it's a really cool hole in the ground that we can make lead down to bedrock. I got together some iron and stone pickaxes and started mining away! Videos (They go along with the post):
Interesting, I also started playing Minecraft in the same manner as you. I had a dream one night in 2012 about a world I wanted to create, and I asked myself: Huh, now how could I create this? Minecraft. My brother had the Xbox version, so I hopped on that. A month later - this was November 2012 - I hopped on the PC version and have been playing that on and off ever since. Only ever had two main worlds.
Anyway, neat concept here. I've only toyed with old versions in the past (in addition to the Xbox version which at the time was equivalent to beta), but I always like watching them.
LP series? Not my style! Video series? Closer, but not quite. Survival journal, maybe? That's better. Now in Season 4 of the Legends of Quintropolis Journal (<< click to view)!! World download and more can be found there.
I found my first diamonds! Even better, we found five of them! My goal is to get enough to make a diamond block as I've been coming up with cool ideas for Spawn Tower and our base. Less exciting, I ran into some gold as well which will go a long way to getting our Spawn Chest filled with all tools and armor. I expanded on Spawn Tower by adding a nice base area to it with all of our utilities. There's really only four blocks in the game that can feasibility be used as building materials: cobblestone, stone, wood, wooden planks and stone slabs. I'm sure you already noticed the different textures used for the cobblestone in these old versions. Also, stone slabs is the only type of slab in the game as of this update and it is crafted with cobblestone instead; it only yields 3 slabs from the crafting recipe. In between mining and building up Spawn Tower, I've also continued working on our Infdev Base. I dug the hole down all the way to bedrock. Durability of tools in pre-Beta 1.2 Minecraft is terrible so I probably went through dozens of stone and iron tools just to get here. Something interesting to note is that bedrock isn't always spawned at the bottom of the map in this version. There are often gaps where dirt and stone spawn instead, allowing the player easy access to the void. There's also a glitch here that isn't patched for quite some time; if you place a piece of dirt under bedrock and tilt it with a hoe, the game will delete the bedrock. This glitch isn't really harmful nor does it give me an advantage so best believe I'm going to take advantage of this while it is here! I want to avoid copying builds I did more previous similar playthroughs but one thing I absolutely had to do was re-create my Infdev sign. This is something I did on both previous worlds and I really like how it looks. I even improved on the look by adding a border for it as well. This is nothing more than a sign to signify our Infdev base and as something to showcase the terrain. I did even more cave exploring and found 4 more diamonds, giving me just enough to craft a diamond block. I placed it on top of Spawn Tower, as a bit of a flex and as something to make it stand out from the basic cobblestone is it now. Chests in these versions look very different from current day Minecraft. For one, they take up a full block of space compared to today where they are a relatively small size. They don't have an animation or sound for opening and closing the chest and you can see how the texture for the double chest looks like. The furnace also has a stone texture for the top that really doesn't fit in with the rest of it.
I shift every time I've played 24 hours in the previous version, but I don't leave my old builds and items behind.
I also play under "legit survival rules" (no cheats, duping, mods, or creative mode) but I do not limit myself to Hard difficulty
Nice! I hope you're having a blast! I really like doing a world like this as for some reason, I am very addicted to these old versions and the way Minecraft changed over the years.
It's crazy that you've only ever had two main worlds! I've had countless and I really wished I saved a lot of them. The ones on my 360 has long since corrupted.
The Wheat Farm: At first, I was going to build a very plain and simple wheat farm for my Infdev Base. However, I refused to get lazy on this project and decided to widen my scope. I flattened the small hill that was in front of the Infdev Sign to give up more land to work with.
The durability of tools pre-Beta 1.2 is pretty terrible so I ran through quite a few iron shovels just taking down that hill. I then used sand to mark out the area I wanted this wheat farm to take up. There are a few small hills in and around the wheat farm I will need to eventually take down. I built a nice little fountain that will stand tall over my wheat farm. I'm not sure what the monument is supposed to be but it's the coolest thing I could come up considering the blocks I have to use currently.
I dug out trenches for the water and used torches on top of stone slabs as a lighting source. I then planted down some wheat, turned most of the dirt into farmland and placed a door at the entrance in an attempt to keep mobs out. This would prove to be useless as passive mobs in these versions can spawn on almost any block in the game so unfortunately, some have spawned in and trampled some of my crops already. There isn't anything I can do about it sadly. Anyways, here's the final product:
I will need to return to it in the near future as I need to add some nice terrain and possibly trees around it to brighten up the area. However, I want to do another cool build by adding directional markers on my map so I know which way is North, East, South and West. Compasses are not in the game yet and there isn't a true F3/Debug Screen yet. The Compass:
First, I used the sand blocks to mark out how far away I want to build them as they need to be the same distance on each side. I based the center on Spawn Tower. Each sand block marks 10 blocks distance.
It took a bit of work to decide on the size of the letters but I made something I'm decently happy with. I forgot how annoying it is to work underwater in these old versions. I don't quite like how close the South Sign is to my future base but I guess I'll have to deal with it for now.
Overall, they're not too bad. I might work on them again in the future. The original plan was to place these at 0,0 which marks the center of the world. However, cords are not in the game so I am unable to see my XYZ locations. The Tree Farm:
I chose an area quite close to the wheat farm to build up the tree platform. It didn't take nearly as much flattening as the wheat farm required. I placed the trees two blocks away from each and it gives me quite a lot of logs when I harvest it. Nothing special here. Mining Sessions:
My biggest goal this update has been to fill up the Starter Chest. This chest will eventually house all our first tools and armor. So my first leather, wooden, stone, iron, gold and diamond stuff along with our first bow will be stored in here. After spending 9 diamonds on making the block on top of Spawn Tower, it was definitely time for a long mining session.
We did pretty good on our first mining trip. We got enough gold to finish off our tools and nearly enough to finish off the armor set. We didn't find quite as much diamond as I would have liked but you have no idea how many blocks I had to mine just to find this amount. Our first diamond sword, axe and pickaxe are safely stored away. Let's do another session.
Wonderful! I got enough diamond to finish off our tools with the diamond shovel and the AMAZING, REVOLUTIONARY diamond HOE! I cried a little wasting those two precious diamonds on the hoe but oh well. I also managed to make a diamond helmet and I technically had enough gold to complete our gold set. Sadly, I had a dummy moment and accidentally crafted a second gold chest plate. I've done so much mining and I think I've had enough for a while. I'm so excited to get this chest of tools and armor done though.
Finally! I finished my Complete Tools & Armor Chest. Finding those last pieces of diamond took forever! Now I've collected everything I needed to collect here and can check that off my checklist. Here's me looking pimped out:
Indev House:
Indev House was a structure that would spawn in new world during the Indev phase of Minecraft. This house would spawn near spawn and be filled with chests of various items in the game. This structure was removed prior to the release of Minecraft Infdev. So I decided to re-create it in our world. It's a pretty simple process and I decorated the interior with some paintings as well. Terra-forming the Area:Before:After:
Next up, I wanted to start on a project that's going to be worked on more and more as time goes on. I want to make this terrain look a bit more natural as when flattening out the terrain for the wheat farm, I left it looking quite ugly. Here, I replaced all the stone with grass and made a natural-looking hill near Indev House and also around the wheat farm.
Also, small update. I started laying out where I want my house to be at. I haven't started work on it yet as I have other projects to attend to but I already have big plans for it. My Infdev Base:
I planned out the bottom of my Infdev base. I don't want it to be too tall as I don't want it to tower over Spawn Tower. The hole in the center leads down to our mining facility at the bottom, dug all the way to bedrock.
I flirted with a few designs but was left unsatisfied. I decided to burn it down and start over. I'll have to sit on it for a while as I'm still unsure what to put here. Luckily, we have two other projects I can work on in the meantime!
10 Years of Minecraft:
These should be the last of the builds I carry over from my old world. This is a little late as the 10 Year Anniversary of Minecraft was May 17th, 2019 but I figured I'd build this in its honor anyways.
That's not the only build here either. I built a little dirt bridge to lead to where our next projects takes us.
First, I need to outline the letters. It took quite a lot of work, especially since you can't crouch/sneak in these versions so it's very easy to fall off the edge.
And there we go. Ten years (technically 11 now) celebrating Minecraft! I really like how the lava lights up in the night and it really stands out in the ocean. I also removed the North, East, West & South Markers I had previously built. I didn't like how they looked and I came up with a better idea for them anyways. Instead, I'm going to build them at 0,0. Sadly, we don't have cords until Alpha 1.2 so I'm gonna have to wait a while before we do that.
With that being said, it is time for an upgrade. I decided to stay on Infdev for a little while longer (mainly to take advantage of a very interesting glitch) but we are going to upgrade the version. We were on Infdev (20100618) and now I'm gonna upgrade it to Infdev (20100630), which is the last version of Infdev before the Alpha phase starts up. I still have a lot to do like sort my items, finish up the base, Spawn Tower and my house.
As stated in my last post, I upgraded from Infdev (20100618) to Infdev (20100630). There a few updates we skipped in between those but I felt it best to jump straight to the last release of Infdev. Here's some of the in-between patch notes:
Infdev (20100624):
-Rideable Minecarts that can't be opened (Previously, Minecarts were treated more like Minecarts with chests. Also, even though the storage function from the previous update was removed, the Minecarts still hold their inventory function, you just can't access it)
-Removed all cloth (wool) colors except white (Previously, Infdev only offered gray wool)
-Sheep now drop white wool (instead of gray)
Infdev (20100625-2):
-Dungeons are added (with saddles, gunpowder, iron ingots, golden apples, etc. as loot)
-Saddles are added and able to be placed on pigs
-Mob Spawners added (Zombie, Skeleton, Spider) (Currently, until Alpha 1.1, Mob Spawners can be obtained by simply mining them)
Infdev (20100629):
-Cobblestone and Oak/Wooden Stairs added
Infdev (20100630):
-Fixed bugs
Stairs!:
Welcome to Infdev (20100630)! We have stairs! They're glitchy, unreliable and don't exactly face the way you want them but they're here! Base Progress: I did a lot of work on my base. I had to expand the underground portion as I found it to be too small and cramp down in the mining base. Without enchantments or beacons (or even durable tools), this took an ungodly amount of time but it was worth it. I found some diamonds on the way, managed to clear a few caves and gathered more cobblestone than I'll ever need. I've run into more hostile mobs in this update than I ever did before. After that, it was time to make things pretty. The walls of the hole have been annoying me for quite some time so I ran over it with some smooth stone and added some wood. I may or may not have died a few times trying (I miss sneaking so much). I also explored a few caves and lit them up so the area around my base is pretty clean of hostile mobs. I'll take them any day over passive mobs though because pigs and sheep can spawn on almost ANY BLOCK (and they're annoying). I added some wooden planks to make it more digestible and added some lava and a little fountain area that also acts as a quick way down. I may or may not have died collecting the lava. I started off with a decent enough design for how I want this base to be structured. But it ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth so I went back to the drawing board. Oooo, that looks a lot better. I'm really happy with the design. Playing these old versions with so many limitations really gets my creative juices flowing. It's time to add some of the final details. Okay, my base is coming together. I still have a lot of work to do on the bottom of it plus I have some ideas for the walls and the rest of the base. I'm going to focus on the storage room and other such things for the next few weeks and I also need to get started on the exterior. The Wheat Farm Episode 5: The Pigs Strike Back Argh! I hate passive mobs (sheeps and pigs) so much right now! Like I stated, they can pretty much spawn on any block and they finally got to my wheat farm. 80% of it is now gone and wasted because of them. I can't wait for the update where they are changed to only spawn on grass. Look how hideous my farm looks now.
TNT, baby!
I realized I had gunpowder just sitting around that I hadn't really used. I pretty much forgot TNT was a thing to be honest :D. I swiftly crafted one up and went out to some area I didn't care for and blew it up, safely of course! Main differences here is that there is no redstone so the way the detonate TNT is by punching it. This also means once you place TNT down, you can't pick it back up so you better be careful with your placement. Storage Room!
I went back underground in my base and completed my first storage room of this world. Obviously, there are no hoppers or any sort of redstone trickery here. All we have are chests placed down with certain items in each one. You can't place chest directly next to each other either so I had to do some careful placement to get them all to function. The Outside! Finally, some fresh air. I headed outside to work on the exterior of the base and I think I did the best I could considering the options available to me at the time. Mining a Mob Spawner! I left the Infdev Base behind for a little to go hunting for the newly added dungeons in the game. It took me quite a few trips into caves to find my first one, a zombie spawner. I'm happy it was a zombie spawner too because I needed to mine this one and would rather use the spider and skeleton ones for traps. So yes, in these versions, the game allows you to mine and collect a mob spawner! One thing to note is once you place the spawner back down, it reverts to spawning only pigs (food supply source :P). For now, I'll store it in a chest and we'll figure out what to do with it in the future. The dungeon also had a saddle which we can use to ride on pigs and we collected the mossy cobblestone. Dungeons are currently the only way to obtain mossy cobblestone.

I've actually been doing one of these... but I started in 1.0.0, the first official release, and I'm going in intervals of:
