I'm new here and looking for a bit of advice regarding a new survival world. I haven't played much since ocean monuments first came out (1.12?) and was looking to get back into it with the goal of a long-term solo survival world focused on "lore friendly" builds and bases while exploring everything new and learning deeper mechanics with minimal tutorials. I never really advanced too much back when I played previously but I really want to invest the time now.
My question is, what would you recommend for world settings? I have loosely explored several Default-type world seeds and found some cool ones, but find the terrain of an Amplified world to inspire me to build with the landscape much more. To be clear, I'm looking for interesting terrain formations and biome intersections more than generated structure availability.
What are your thoughts, recommendations, or advice? Please share!
Amplified can be fun but, make sure you do not have "overhyped" yourself. Because I know for me I cannot, in my opinion, reach the full potential of an amplified world, the world already looks amazing there isn't a lot I can do with it. But if you can improve an amplified world, even if it's just in your opinion and, feel satisfied with what you've done I say play normal mode with amplified. It's a ton of fun with the wonderful terrain. I also totally suggest having a long-term survival world. It's sort of like a diary. It can record your intentions and actions just like a diary or a journal would. Even though it can be tedious as long as in the end, you feel satisfied I believe it is worth it. Good luck man.

I play both Bedrock and Java editions - they are frequently competed against each other but imo, in a nutshell, Bedrock is better for casual play whilst Java is better for hardcore play.
It sounds like you are just doing Java and you will use the most frequent version. In that case, I just recommend the default settings but use a seed of a word you can remember, and maybe turn on the bonus chest. You can obviously change the difficulty to your liking.
With a new Minecraft version on the way it might be a good idea to hold off on starting a real world for a while and just test different variants so you can start a new world when 1.15 drops and have all the new features close to home. (Not that there is much more than bees being added this time.)
Or, if you're itching to get started, make sure you only explore in one direction, say north, so you get bees and things close to spawn in the other directions after you upgrade.

The Buzzy Bees update released three days ago. Assuming the OP decides to play in 1.15 at all, they won't have to worry about managing their exploration.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

Aha!
I've been long distance moving for 3 days and sleeping most of today to recuperate so so I've been out of the loop for the last 4 days.
(And the news hasn't reached the front page of the forum yet, that still has pre-release 1 at the top?)

Nothing obvious inside the forums either?
If it weren't for your post and my following quick check in the launcher I still wouldn't have a clue.
Thanks everyone for the advice, some good wisdom here!
I do only play Java at this point and plan on keeping the world up to date with the latest releases (no snapshots).
The Amplified world that I was debating using is a seed I found years ago that I fell in love with. There is a Birch Forest mountainous peninsula very close to spawn on the ocean with beautiful terrain and a Swamp on the opposite side which flows out into the ocean and is nestled in a deep valley on its other sides. For years I have been wanting to turn that peninsula into a sprawling fortress base and the swamp into a massive village but never had the time to invest into it.
The Default world will likely be the seed "Gold Experience" which I have explored a bit already. While not as inspiring, I think it would serve well as a main world. I've always wanted to do a dwarven mine type of build in a ravine, and there's a beautiful surface ravine at spawn. I'll probably spend a couple more hours searching through more random seeds just to be sure.
After consideration I think I should start with a default world. My favorite thing to do is explore and despite not being quite as inspiring as amplified, seeing the new content and biomes "as intended" in a default world sounds right for me. Perhaps in the future I'll start a Hardcore world with the Amplified seed so I can have the best of both worlds.
Anyways, thanks again for everyone's opinions and advice!

PS: don't use cheats, it's boring
In my opinion Amplified breaks the wonder of finding an actual Shattered Savanna...

Just testing.
