I really miss the pvp that Minecraft had before 1.9
that update killed a lot of big servers. And also made the player base go down. A lot of players played Minecraft because the pvp was too much fun and now it’s gone. I know mojang won’t read and listen but please take back the old pvp system and remove the attack cool down.
Whenever I get the "just revert to 1.8", my eyes roll a full 360 in their sockets... I have to design a system that works well both in PvE and PvP, and well on touch and controller as well as mouse-and-keyboard. It will never be 100% equal for everyone, but I will at least try something that works OK in most scenarios while still giving some design flexibility.
1.9 combat was created with cross-platforms in mind. Spam-clicking like 1.8 not only makes no sense due to invincibility frames, but it puts PC players at an extreme advantage.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
7 Days to Die
Just Cause series
Psychonauts
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Not Mojang's official figures, even when everybody was loudly proclaiming that the game was dead or dying (there isn't even any evidence of a "revival" this year, at least not in terms of how many are playing the game - Google Trends is simply not an accurate measure of how popular a game is based on its player base):
That's almost a tripling of the active player base since 1.9 was released... and before you say that this excludes Java the majority of videos that I see for Minecraft are people playing on Java, which has sold about 1.5 times more copies overall than when 1.9 was released (currently at about 33 million), and as a percentage of overall sales it hasn't changed much (even back in 2012 it was only about 28% of sales, 16% for Christmas Day, while it is currently at about 18% of lifetime sales - this is true of games in general, where PCs are a minority of platforms).
Besides, from what I've heard many PvP servers just use plugins to revert combat, which can also be done with commands built into the game or mods (e.g. make diamond swords deal 8 damage and Sharpness add 1.25 damage per level like before).
Fun fact: while i still play in 1.6.4 my own namesake mod has a "penalty system" for spam-clicking, where you can attack as fast as you like but weapon damage is decreased for a period of time if you either hit a mob while it is damage-immune and the damage is less than the previous player-dealt damage (as with vanilla you can bypass damage immunity by dealing more damage but only the difference is dealt so in the end you can still only deal the maximum damage of a single attack every half second) or miss entirely (the maximum miss rate is about once per second to avoid a penalty and in either case a single "bad" hit won't penalize you). I also did not fix a (very easy to fix) bug in versions before 1.7 that caused weapons to lose durability with every hit, even if no damage was dealt (since IMO this is part of the penalty; "For example a wooden sword with 60 uses SHOULD deal damage 60 times, not having half of them going to waste." - sure, stop spam-clicking).

In other words, other editions still have the pre-1.9 system (over four years after it appeared in 1.9 snapshots), so you can't claim that the 1.9+ system is what all editions use (Bedrock does have shields but there is no weapon cooldown and weapons deal the old damage values).
I really miss the pvp that Minecraft had before 1.9

that update killed a lot of big servers. And also made the player base go down.
Uncited statements
A lot of players played Minecraft because the pvp was too much fun and now it’s gone.
Blanket statement

And the conclusion.
If you're going to make an argument for 1.8 combat, at least make a substantive argument for it as opposed to arguing based on subjective preference.
I won't argue that the 1.9 combat system is perfect, it's not. However, the 1.8 combat system is bland and uninteresting, whereas the 1.9 combat system at least requires accurate timing and remaining calm under stress, which are two actual skills as opposed to being able to press a button quickly. (Personally I wish you didn't have to place your cursor exactly on the thing you're swinging at with Swords since that'd make Baby Zombies and Silverfish far less of a nightmare to deal with.)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python.
I get offtopic a lot, be warned. I also often mention a Minecraft clone called Minetest. The clone is nowhere near playable with it's default game in my opinion, but it's at least the start of a good open-source voxel rendering engine, and maybe one day it might be decently playable.

I'm not. I was saying Mojang's working to create a cross-compatible combat system that will ultimately be added when Java and other editions come together. The console versions currently don't need combat overhauls because they're already limited by joystick and trigger speed.

Actually, Jeb said 1.8 combat will never return. (url)

The player base went down? According to who?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
