I've built a house on top of a mountain, and created a spawning room on the floor immediately beneath. So the floor level of my house is on level 85, the floor of the spawning room is level 81 and it's three blocks high by 7 by 13. The reason is I have a redstone circuit to flood the floor of the room and push all the mobs into a 2x2 hole where they fall 29 blocks onto 4 hoppers that collect all their goodies and then a minecart circuit runs them back up to my house...
Even though the room is pitch dark, nothing ever spawns in there. Not even on "hard" difficulty. I've checked and the rest of the mountain is pretty much solid - no caves or dungeons or anything, so does anyone have any idea why stuff might not be spawning?
Also, is there a way to bring up the F3 screen these days? Nothing happens when I press F3 on my keyboard...
How big is the area you have checked in terms of the rest of the mountain? As i recall you have to light up all caves and other spawnable areas (such as outside at night) within a 128 block radius of your spwn area) to maximiase the spawning chances only taking place in the area you want. Also, you area of 7 x 13 is rather small, so thats probably even more true.
Also, you havent stated what version you are playing. I play 1.13 and F3 works fine.
Plus you need to be at least 24 blocks away for anything to spawn, so nothing is going to spawn in your basement as long as you are directly overhead.
Specifically mobs will only spawn between 24 and 128 blocks away from your position.
(And that's the 3D Euclidean distance (a straight line as measured with a ruler) not Taxicab distance (counting block edges)).
That'll be it then. I assumed the same spawning rules applied as when you're near a dungeon - i.e. if you're not near it they won't spawn-which is why I built it directly underneath my house, so whenever I'm there they would be spawning like crazy. Ho-hum.
Don't have the console switched on right now (regarding version) but I play whatever is the latest update of the Better Together edition on the Xbox. I'm a bit confused as some people refer to this as Bedrock and some as Java, unless I'm completely barking. Anyway, thanks for the replies. I'll investigate plugging a direct keyboard in for the F3 thing as I normally use a wireless keyboard/mouse via dongle combo, and see if that fixes that.

Ah, no, cage spawners work in the opposite way to normal spawning.
Anybody calling anything on Xbox the Java edition is either a master hacker or confused themselves.
Java MC only works on PC (Windows or Linux) and Mac.
The confusion is probably largely caused by the Windows 10 edition which is Bedrock/Better Together (also referred to as just "Minecraft" now days) for Windows 10 PCs (and possibly Win 10 phones if they still exist).
So, we, the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race
get to play either Java or Bedrock (at least those of us running Windows 10)

Mintutor now works in 1.13!
MrKite & Mc_Etlam ... I salute you!
What he said.

Just testing.
