I'm Vegan, and I enjoy implementing this lifestyle choice into my gameplay. I don't kill animals (if I can help it), and eat only things that don't require me to kill them (I don't mind eating eggs and milk because I don't have to kill to get them).
But, chickens do not drop feathers unless you kill them, and its currently the only way to get feathers, so I request that the feature of chickens occasionally shedding a feather being implemented into the game, this is also realistic as chickens and birds in general do this in the real world. I know this would be a easy thing to implement, a command line here, a timer there. Done.
Currently I have to kill skeletons to get arrows, and book and quills are not available to me, while I choose not to kill them.
I have a similar thing with leather from cows, but there are ways to get books from villagers and some natural bookshelf spawns in villages. Which is the only thing I use leather for.
I know this is just a game, but I do have that miniscule pang of guilt if I kill an animal / non-hostile mob.
I'll say it now, make your jokes about Veganism all you want, but consider this. For each person you can keep fed with steak from a cow, you could keep 17 people fed with the resources it took to produce that steak. So even if a person isn't Vegan because they have compassion for living beings (like me), its the way forward for the enviroment and eliminating hunger and starvation around the world. Also, I don't berate meat eaters either, its your choice, and I respect that. As you ought to respect my and other Vegans choice. And like any group of people, there are the stupid people who take it too far and preach their lifestyle choice onto others, which is wrong.
Peace

If you kill a zombie chicken jockey , most often the chicken dies also and drops feathers. That's the only way I got feathers on an all ocean biome world.
Aye, but they chicken riding baby zombie can be killed without the death of the chicken, which I think is fantastic, I take out my axe to kill the zombie as to avoid the AOE damage that the sword does which would hurt/kill the chicken
Edit: And I don't use mods of any kind, I just like the vanilla game and keep it that way
Edit2: Ok I used a chicken shedding datapack, thank christ its that easy to install them, had a bad experience with Minecraft mods a few years back and never used mods since, but that datapack thing is easy as pie. Thanks
I'd disagree that Chickens should randomly drop feathers. Yes, there should be some other way of getting feathers for books in case chickens aren't an option, but chickens are one of the most useful animals because they can randomly lay eggs that can hatch other chickens. Making them also drop feathers would ruin a lot of functionality by requiring a sorting system just to get rid of feathers. All that just for a resource that only has one or two purposes aside from the already renewable arrows?
if anything, fletchers could also sell feathers. Librarians sell bookshelves and buy books. Masons buy quartz/1.8 stones and sell quartz blocks/polished 1.8 stones. Fletchers even sell gravel and buy it. I don't see why adding feathers to their selling would be bad. Maybe worst-case scenario, librarians could have book-and-quills as purchasable items instead of buying them.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
A strange philosophy? Well sorry if you don't understand self defense against hostile mobs I'm not going to bother explaining it beyond what I just said. And if for no other reason Jan, because its realistic. And not every person spawns nearby a village in a survival world, I for one have nearly a full set of diamond armor in my world and I haven't managed to find a village yet.
Here, I made a short video demonstrating why I accept killing hostile mobs...

Gameplay > Realism. Realism isn't enough of a reason to add something. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a dragon, three-foot-tall beetle wing gloss you can somehow fly with, enchantments, potions, even wooden tools. A thirst bar would only bring downsides so it's a fairly unpopular idea here despite being "realistic".
Chickens are one of the most useful animals due to them producing infinite eggs, allowing them to be used as vital components in machines such as auto chicken cookers. Adding another random drop from them would break these types of machines and/or require complex machines just to filter out the new feathers, and feathers don't have enough valid uses to warrant such a change. I don't want to wait 10 minutes just to get a feather instead of an egg.
I'd support something like shearing chickens for feathers, though, since farmers will actually clip the wings of chickens to keep them from flying away. I'd also support some alternate way of obtaining feathers such as by killing phantoms or trading with villagers. But seeing as how changing random drops like this would cause too many issues with chicken functionality, I can't support this as it stands.

They don't read Minecraft Forums. The Suggestion forum is to polish ideas before putting them on the Minecraft subreddit. Mojang is very active in the Minecraft subreddit.

I would advise you reread the original post. The suggestion is for a way to get feathers without having to kill chickens. The only other ways to get them is to kill parrots (I assume OP would have the same issue there as they do with Chickens), finding them in Villages (rare), or getting them from tamed cats (very rare).

I find it a strange philosophy that allows you to kill pseudo humans ( zombies, skeletons? ) but not a chicken. An apparent irrelevancy?
