I'm doing the elf challenge (because I love elves and archery) but I have one question, when it says nothing above wood, it means no iron. Does that only include main tools, or shears as well?
Nothing above wood. It means what it says. No cobble, no stone, no iron. Any item, tool, or weapon that requires anything above wood to make, you can't make it.
Also guys, if you want, you don't have to follow EVERY rule! Or just make your own set of rules up! It's a challenge, it has a specific set of rules. That doesn't mean you can't make it harder or easier for you though!

Well, it's been a little while since my last update so here goes:
- Island building takes for... ever... it's a big build, biggest I've ever done, so...
- Plot of land for one noble is ready to be inhabited. Yay.
Castle:
- Keep first floor is finished.
- Dining Hall and Meeting Room needs to be furnished. (Dining Hall has a table, just no chairs. And will get a Torch Candleabra soon.)
- Figured out how I am going to do the towers. Spiral stairs up in the middle of the tower. Why I didn't think of it before...
- Second floor is laid out. I just need to finish putting up the interior walls and light the place up.
- Treasury is built and my gold armor is in it. As well as my redstone, additional gold, diamonds and ender pearl.
- Guard room needs to be furnished as well.
- Wall access from the second floor is built, but the wall is not yet worked on.
- Third floor is started. Alchemy lab is built, though it lacks the brewing stand (Until Stage 4...) It *does* however, have a cobblestone generator. Yay!
To Do:
- Two more plots for nobles.
- Finish second floor.
- Finish third floor including Royal Bedroom as well as the throne room.
- Build wall around keep.
- Build stables.
- Build "Stairway to Heaven" errr... The stairs up to the island for a safer trip up than the existing ladder.
- Wait for grass to start growing on the island. It only has to creep up another 100 blocks to get there...
- ???
- Profit
Awesome job so far guys! Just got back from vacation, sorry I haven't been active
I think lore is a REALLY good idea... One of you can join the team for writing, and the other can join our team for textures! (We don't only do challenges, so you'll have some other things to work on also )

While expanding the area for my kobold city, I found a cave network underneath. Despite some hairy situations dealing with the mob spawns inside, it's something of a mixed blessing as it'll save me some work excavating, since I'd planned on making the city multi-level anyway. Capitalizing on an existing cave network is exactly what I'd expect from those wily kobolds!
Progress on the Stage 1 resources is slow, however - having a hard time finding cows for the leather. Chopping down lots of trees to find apples and replanting every sapling I find. Area should be very densely forested as a result.

Cobblestone generator in my alchemy lab made life tons easier and thus *quite* a bit of work has been finished. Hooray for alchemy!
Given that:
- All three floors are completed. (I figured it'd be easier to do that now rather than have to re-purpose rooms later.)
- Dining room is furnished, meeting room not yet. Bedroom is furnished.
Keep is 35 blocks by 35 blocks by 21 blocks high, currently.
To Do For Keep / Castle:
- Spiral staircase in other three towers.
- Finish towers to full height. Towers - sans roofing - will bring the keep to 35 blocks high. Roofing makes it 41 or 42, if I recall correctly.
- Finish keep roof, including battlement walkway around edge of roof. Put trim work underneath to look cooler. (Very dangerous, sizable drop.)
- Add decorative trim to stairwells from second to third floor.
- Put chandelier over grand stairwell from first to second floor.
- Open third story window from bedroom.
- Throne room and approach.
Issues:
- WHY ARE MOBS SPAWNING IN MY CASTLE!?!? *Ahem* It's rather well lit in there, yet mobs are spawning in rooms with a 9 light level. I thought it had to be 7 or lower to spawn?
- How to reduce the lighting areas without making things too dark at night and allowing mobs to spawn. Creepers will be exceedingly dangerous at the moment. Only two layers of ground cover between me and a 140 meter fall...
- Is there a limit as to how high grass will grow? Grass seems to be stuck at 100 blocks up... Will have to examine more closely.
- Much more stone needed. Cobblestone generator useful. Wish there was an easy charcoal generator aside from sapling + bonemeal, cut and burn... as I am getting perilously low on bonemeal. Might have to take a break and go to surface and continue deforestation in island zone.
Analysis of the keep from MCEdit (did not do anything else with it. Was simply curious how much stone and stone brick I have used...):
4487 Stone
34 Cobblestone
7 Wood Planks
25 Wood
14 Beds
21 Pistons
20 White Wool \ Kitchen
20 Black Wool /
385 Blue Wool Main Floor Carpeting.
10 Stone Slabs (Pedestal for Brewing Stand when I get one...)
6 Wood Slabs (Counter Top in Kitchen)
56 Stone Brick Slab (Stairs both main and spiral in tower.)
6 Bookshelves
358 Torches (Hee...)
10 Wooden Stairs (Or as I prefer to call them, Chairs.)
31 Chests
2 Crafting Tables (Kitchen and Alchemy Lab)
5 Furnaces (Four in Kitchen, One in Lab)
23 Wood Doors
18 Signs (Arms for chairs)
1 Pressure Plate (For treasury)
1 Iron Door (Same)
6388 Stone Bricks
160 Iron Bars
87 Stone Brick Stairs

Minor update: Learned why I wasn't growing grass any further... I had an Enderman or two visit my spiral stairs of dirt and removed some, preventing the grass from growing.
Getting close! I've had to deforest most of the known world, but I've almost got all the apples. Everything else is in the bank (leather caps are those weird gray/black wolf-head-looking things to the right of the apples). As always, I've been eventually replanting every sapling that drops.
Taking it under advisement that we can make the challenge easier/harder on ourselves, I've decided to skip ahead a bit and start my farms. First off, pumpkins!
Cows & cows & cows!
Farming wheat underground as god intended.
Aqueduct tunneling down from the entrance to the wheat farm.
Planning on putting chickens in here. Haven't had any luck with them spawning from eggs yet and the only chickens I've found above ground are a long walk from the city.
Eventually planning on excavating this area more and raising sheep here.
Entrance is now 100% below water and lit by a jack-o'-lantern - no more listening to zombies pound on the door!
Bonus: squids on the front "lawn" and gobs of sugarcane.
I finally manged to collect all the apples; Stage 1 is complete!
Final intruder kill count for Stage 1:
9 skeletons
8 spiders
7 zombies
6 creepers
Continuing with Stage 2!
Made some renovations to the aqueduct. I think it looks much better now.
Of course, shortly after the remodel I got an uninvited guest! Not sure how he managed to squid his way down, since the passage is as narrow as possible.
At this point, seeing him thrashing dangerously close to my wheat crop, I decided his intentions were not honorable and I dealt with the intruder with extreme prejudice.
The invasive squid dealt with, I was able to turn my attention elsewhere. Food storage room complete with ample room for expansion if necessary.
Barracks and training grounds (complete with jack-o'-lantern practice dummies) have been constructed. I still need to gather a good deal of wool for the sleeping quarters, however.
Of course, no barracks is complete without an area for the guards to relax, have a drink, and play a friendly game of cards after a long night of defending the city.
Additional: the chicken enclosure finally has a few residents! Unfortunately, the critters are bugged - got 5 chicks to spawn from 2 eggs. One of them has already despawned. Hopefully they won't all disappear on me.
Intruder kill count so far for Stage 2 (I'm not required to score any kills to complete the stage, but keeping track for sake of completion):
5 Skeletons
2 Spiders
1 Zombie
Unfortunately, I died once in the process of defending the city and lost some of my precious XP. On the positive side, though, I'm never carrying anything irreplaceable so if I lose some items it's a negligible setback.

Nothing new to add today. Spent my Minecraft time yesterday expanding a cave on a friend's server out for a large underground build. :-D
That said:
- Battlements are in place on roof. Trim work still needs to be done.
- Decorative trim added.
- Third story window is open, but I need to put in iron gating to keep it safe to be near.
- Throne room mostly finished. Needs roof.
To Do For Keep / Castle:
- Spiral staircase in other three towers.
- Finish towers to full height. Towers - sans roofing - will bring the keep to 35 blocks high. Roofing makes it 41 or 42, if I recall correctly.
- Finish keep roof. Put trim work underneath to look cooler. (Very dangerous, sizable drop.)
- Put chandelier over grand stairwell from first to second floor.
- Battlement trim.
- Roof throne room.
- Castle walls + bastions and gatehouse.
- Stables.
Once the keep itself (not the *castle* just the keep) is finished, either today or tomorrow, I will likely post pictures on Friday of it and all the stuff inside.
At this point I'm going to be ignoring the "Have x stacks of x." requirements as they are no longer a challenge to acquire. Two stone picks gets me all the cobble I need without any risk to me (Thanks alchemy lab!) and saplings + time (gathering cobble) will get me enough trees to fulfill all the wood stack requirements.
