Best sources of food are bread and melons.
bread is harder to make then melons but restores more chicken nuggets.
melons grow faster and give you a huge amount of food in a short time, sadly they
restore one nugget per *slice* of a melon and its slower to refill your whole hunger bar.
Theoretically, a stack of melons (that's full melons, not melon slices) heals a larger number of food units than anything else you can fit in one stack, except golden apples if they stack, I forget. And a cool thing about melons is that you can always take one of your last slices and start a new farm with it. The big drawbacks are that you need to eat frequently, and if you're carrying complete melons, you need to place and destroy them to get your food. With a Fortune tool, you might be able to get over 440 food out of a stack of melons, compared to the 256 in a stack of beef. Without enchanted tools, you'll average 320 food in a melon stack.
I never really thought about it, but melons are totally feasible for a semi-nomadic lifestyle due to the fact that they can be used to plant new farms and can be grown very quickly with bonemeal.
Cooked porkchops or steak. In the snapshots, pigs drop a TON of meat, the same as cows now. Just breed about 100 of them, and you will get about 4 stacks of meat. Really only takes like 2 real life hours.
Seems to me, for simplicity and efficiency, there are only two ways to go: Vegetarian or Carnivore? For the 'Veggies Only' crowd there is Bread, for the 'That's what food eats' crowd, Steak (and effectively, you will have wheat already if you are breeding cows).
=<Bread>= as a first renewable food source,it is a solid choice: Replaces --> 3 Food Points / 6 Saturation + stackable<--, seeds are easily gathered from tall grass, a flooding field for easy collection of the goods is none too hard (no fancy redstone devices required, though later on they are def flash), one cycle of a standard size field will keep the harvests rolling indefinitely.
=<Steak>= is probably the best choice overall, if you already have wheat for breeding (and can stomach it ): Replaces --> 4 Food Points / 12.8 Saturation + stackable<--, easily corralled into a farm setting (esp with wheat in hand), husbandry is a snap, one trip to the Nether for one block of Netherrack and you be rockin auto-BBQ style (again, nothing fancy required, make a gate, hold some wheat, they will literally cook themselves for you), drops more than pigs and, in fact, more than most other mobs in the game. NEEDED TO MAKE CAKE! Everyone likes cake
I think we can all agree, a food source must be renewable. You need wheat for all forms of breeding, so there it is. You then want most bang for buck, so Steak it is.
The best source of food is undeniably melons. They grow quickly and drop lots of edible slices. But because they only restore 1 bar of food per use, they take up a lot of room and take a long time to eat.
Also don't forget that the saturation on melons is extremely low.

If you live in a place with few animals that drop food, you may want to make yourself a fishing rod and try your luck at the nearest pond, or even make your own pond with a bucket. It works, for me. Wheat farms are also a fairly good source of food as well. Also, rotten flesh is actually fairly good at replenishing your food bar, but if you have other foods, its not the best choice, because it increases the depletion rate of your food bar. Still, rotten flesh is very plentiful and a good last resort.
Either melons or steak, if you get melon seeds, use them, their a quick source of food. If there's some cows, kill them, they always drop at least 1 beef
In the minecraft coding, pork and steak have the most hunger and saturation values. This makes steak the best as you get more of it from one animal. Hope this helps.

You did a much better job at explaining why steak is the best food then I did. +1 to you.
Make some big mushroms, then harvest them till you get around 40. Then make 40 bowls, bring a crafting table with you but only make them when you're hungry.
if you make the stew as you go then you only need to make 3 bowls
Everyone, I think you're missing the point. The most important part about the OP's question is portability.
Personally, I eat Mushroom Stew from a Mooshroom when I'm in town and Bread or Melons when away. There isn't really one right answer for this. It depends on preparation time. If you have time to prepare, definitely Steak (or Porkchop) since it stacks to 64, has the highest saturation, and gives you 4 food bars. If you are in a rush, melons because they are quick to harvest, stack to 64, but the downfalls are they only give you 1 food bar and have very low saturation. Most people forget about saturation; this means that you don't need to eat 4x as many Melons as Steak to keep your hunger bar up, you need to eat like 10x more often because you get hungry faster so you'll need to carry over 5 stacks of Melons to get the same result as carrying one stack of Steak.
COOKIES?!
I think you might have meant bread, cookies require cocoa beans and those are pretty hard to find. They also restore just half a heart.
Cookies require cocoa beans which are much easier to get in 1.3. They heal one food bar but have a lower saturation, so they're just about as good as melons (faster to farm but lower saturation).

you dont need a crafting table to make mushroom stew. noob, lol jk
