I know this topic is likely several months old from the last post, but I'm gonna be redoing this challenge after I finish my LAN server world. Pictures will be posted. Modded world used. Also, I'm betting iron bars means ingots. Just so I know, please confirm.
Edit: steelfeathers, if I find iron ingots in chests in a dragon's roost (Ice and Fire mod installed), would that technically count as dungeon loot, since it's loot table design is similar? I'm gonna limit myself anyways and keep it unused until the iron age. Same with gold, but until gold age except for iron age treasure.

Same here, since I took a break for a half a year...again. Don't get mad at me
I'm almost done with the stone age but I have a couple questions if there is anyone who still looks at this thread. First off, did anyone else count a roof on top of their wall as part of their wall's actual height? And second, did anyone put structures outside of their main wall, and if so did you wall them off too? Just wondering, I've already built a big stone quarry outside my walls so I'm somewhat resigned to changing it, but I still could shift my wall around it. As for the first question, I'm just really not sure if I should count the wall's height as the height from the ground to the very top of the roof I'm putting above it.
If anyone happens to be on this thread still and replies, thanks!

I believe height is the height of the entire wall, from bottom to top, so it should count the roof as well. So if you built a 3-block high wall, and the third block up is where the roof is, that'd work.
Edit: Started a new challenge world, and considering the slightly harder start given to me by PrimalCore, I had to break a rule(requirement) for the beginning, though this is only for the terraforming part and will be rectified once I begin on the actual challenge itself. Also, since PrimalCore makes flint tools replace wood/stone in a way (can still craft and use vanilla tools), it'll be a replacement for my early tools, though I'll be using Forgecraft iron tools once I hit the Iron Age. Screenshots will come once I make some decent progress, and a bonus screenie when I finish the terraforming and finish clearing the scorched bits of the top layer (a dragon had fun in my building area while I was terraforming).
Edit2: What do you mean "flag always visible from outside the wall"? Inner or outer? If inner, that'll be easy, since the inner wall will be shorter than the keep yet taller than the minimum height (5 in the gold and diamond ages).
Long time lurker. I have actually tried this a few times and it always gets lost as I clear room or lose interest. I updated to 1.13.2 and booted up the Chromahills pack for this run. Since screenshots are limited to 5 Megs I ended up uploading everything to imgur, sorry if this is bad practice but I didn't want to resize everything.
The seed was a great start, its plains between Savannah's and a medium sized ocean. The first day I built a super bad cover over my start point to meet the starting criteria. Luckily there were a fair amount of sheep and I was able to craft a bed, and copious trees for a boat. From there I raided a village near me for a few loafs of bread, carrots and potatoes, no black smith though. I set sail from my starting point only to instantly find a shipwreck, it can be seen in the first photo in the background. After looting the ship I spent some time following treasure maps, I found 9 in all, 5 of which were unique. While looting treasure maps I found a decent sized set of underwater ruins. The chest in them were all duplicates that netted 8 stone axes. I also managed to loot a ton of iron, gold and emeralds from various maps/shipwrecks/ruins as seen in one of the screen shots. While out I was able to find spruce trees and collect saplings, this would be the foundation for this base. I returned to my starting spot and began farming 4 sapling spruce trees. I will tell you what, had it not been for the stone axes I may have gave up, trying to mow down a 30 meter tall 4 wide spruce with a wood axe is just soul crushing, especially when you have 60 bars of iron.
1: Overview with ship wreck. Outside consist of minimum 3 high tall spruce logs backed with spruce planks and upside down stairs on the outside wall. The wall is 4 high everywhere and 3 thick at the top. There is an entrance on the left and in the back.
2: Overview with farm(wheat, potato, carrot and pumpkin) 2 animal pens.
3: From the wall, its all over 3 high with stairs on the edge and lit up.
4: Keep/House front with storage.
5: Different angle of keep and house.
6: Inside shot of the bedroom and ladder to the loft. Nothing is in the loft, I wanted to use the 60+ books I found to make a reading room but did not get around to it.
7: Farm, wheat, potatoes, carrots and pumpkins. I think there are 15 bales of hay.
8: Starting point to the left. I will do something better eventually. The lowest block in the center is my start. The column is all the different woods I have found. I forgot to remove a chest before the shot.
9: Leather armor I found and horse armor/saddle.
10: Food Stuffs, cooked meat in this challenge can be easy with the chest on the ships full of fish. I cooked all my other meat though. Saplings for quest.
11: Loot, Gold, Iron, Emeralds and 1 Diamond.
12 Tool use, 8 stone axes and zero crafted, 16 wood axes. 1300 spruce logs, Never want to do that again.
Highlights:
Found a mending villager for 20 emeralds. I am probably going to put mending on a stone pick........
All of the coal was found in chest or converted form logs, none of it was mined.
Aside from ruins I never broke stone or ores.
Found a iron sword, full leather armor and iron pants.
Edit: I made a bucket from Iron I found because anyone can carry water in a leather hat, and I made a set of shears as I found flint and flint can be used to remove wool/leaves. These were the two items I felt were available with wood technology.
Just a quick post: Since the City Construction Challenge topic didn't make it through the fandom acquisition, I have linked it below in the Web Archive/Wayback Machine if anyone wants to take a look before they begin the challenge:
How much of a roof is needed for animal pens post Wood Age? Does it need to completely cover the pen or just somewhere the animals can escape the rain? Either way, for my challenge (and possibly as an update to my attempt at this challenge, which I have completed), I'm putting my cows in a nice looking barn.
I've been thinking about trying this challenge for several years now, and I finally started a world for it back in December. About four and a half months of intermittent play later, I have completed the wood age.
man, its been a long time, like 4 years since I last attempted this challenge, I have to admit younger me really tried to outdo themselves on this challenge. I have at last managed to beat vanilla minecraft on hardcore and now I want to get back into building, thought this would be a good place to start. unlike my previous attempts I am going to take a more relaxed approach to this challenge, hard difficulty vanilla minecraft, no hardcore mode and no insane projects in the wood age. lets see how this goes
ok so it's been a little over a week, I have been making steady progress though I am still in the wood age. most of my time has been spent building the wall which is almost done, it just needs another tower and gate, then I can start working on the keep, but man this is one helluva wall! I'm quite happy with it.
I have included some pictures of my progress in the link below, enjoy!

I had been thinking about trying this challenge again, don't think I got past the stone age before. I am almost done with the wood age now. Playing on a 1.7.10 Life in the Woods type mod pack, also with Copious Dogs, so I am calling it "Dogs in the Courtyard". I haven't tamed any dogs yet, though, waiting for at least stone tools first. The little wooden pavillion with the fence around it is my spawn point, protected. The chests will have all my "treasures". Need to find cows to get the leather. My bedroom is in the keep, 2nd floor, and I will be creating a kitchen in the basement eventually. My castle is also going to run into a ravine, so not sure how I will deal with that yet.
Nyscole, your wall is really nice, very fancy! Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see more of your castle.
sorry, it's been a while since my last post, there's been a lot of stuff I needed to sort out irl which has reduced how much time I could play, but I have not been idle.
Nice start on your castle btw sdreamer!
I'm still in the wood age and I still have a ways to go but thought I would post screenshots to show my journey as I make this castle, but also, this thing is looking amazing!
Edit: remember when I said no crazy projects in the wood age? I guess I couldn't help myself XD
second edit: yesterday I spent the whole day finishing off the wall, I am now excited to say that it is finally complete! here are the pics. I will be taking a week or so off from this world before I return and start working on the keep.
since I am new to posting screenshots on imgur, let me know if there is anything that needs improving or anything you enjoyed, I will be happy to take your advice and improve how I share my progress
At last after a lot of work the keep has been completed! All requirements have been met and I can advance to the stone age, below is a link to my progress with building the keep, upgrading the farm area and decorating the spawn. and the first villager has happily joined my empire, the empire of Eriador!
Found a mistake in the Stone age: "redstone can be collected, but cannot be used in circuitry."
It looks like you updated the rules to not allow iron tools in the Stone age, which means we can't gather redstone until the iron age.
Also, it would be nice to update this challenge a bit for the current version of the game. For instance, we don't need to build a stone furnace in the wooden age, because we can make camp fires to cook meat! So furnaces can be saved for the Stone age now. Still Loving this challenge, thanks for creating it!

I'm glad to see you're enjoying the challenge, do you have screenshots of the wood age? campfires in the wood age would be a cool implementation, I didn't think of that

I had taken a slight break from my castle, but I am back at it! Finished my cobblestone wall, and going to start working on the first guard tower soon.
Wow, Nyscole, your castle is terrific, even in wood! Mine is so small and basic compared to yours, but its neat seeing what you are doing.
Tunareth, nice to see someone else joining in! Can't wait to see your pics. I will post pictures again soon. Right now its just a very basic cobblestone wall, but I have enclosed a small pond, and will work on making gardens around it.

I finally finished the Stone Age! Took me the longest time to get the leather to make my armor. A few pics, and onward to iron! My guard tower. (Idea borrowed from Greg Builds) My treasure chest. The castle area, courtyard in the background. (Courtyard idea from TheBlackBeltPanda).
Nice work sdreamer!
not gonna lie I haven't been working on the stone age, replacing the wooden walls and keep with stone just seems really boring and monotonous.
I will need to spice things up a little to get my creative juices flowing again, I want this castle to be the biggest grandest thing I have ever made on minecraft and I have lots of great ideas, so I may end up deviating from the challenge a bit, I really want to get this thing looking amazing! Between that and the recent curve balls life has been throwing my way it will definitely take some time but I just want you to know that I am still continuing this challenge. I hope to get back into my survival world shortly
lol, I guess it has been a while. I'm just gonna call it builder's block for lack of a better term. I started work on the wall today, decided I was just gonna put a stone wall in the existing wood wall instead of building a whole new outer wall or replacing the entire wooden wall with stone, I think I am happy with the results so far, but still working on it. I've also made a bigger storage and dedicated entrance to the keep
Doesn't look like it, but you can always employ the rule of cool.
I don't mean to be unapproachable. I accept critiques and suggestions well, so please, by all means, make as many suggestions as you would like.

unfortunately some core files on my computer got corrupted, so I had to reboot it and lost my minecraft world in the process
the question is if I want to restart the challenge or not, it's a lot of work and commitment to build something of such scale
