i like your castle! the way you integrated the village into a keep looks really good! i would've torn them down and made a perfectly symmetrical keep but yours is better because it is natural and random.
i will attempt this challenge on hardcore. last time i lasted 3 days, how long will i make it this time?
So I'm gonna try this challenge. I've attempted it in the past and have never gotten past stone. However, I'm going to be doing it with a twist so extreme it almost requires a different challenge: TerraFirmaCraft. I will have add-ons installed that make some things easier and just expand on areas that need expanding. I'll post a list when I come back to show updates.
Of course, TFC has a different tier system. You start with stone and work your way into stronger alloys. Since stone doesn't offer the full tool set and is literally just there so you can actually start, I'm not counting it as an age. If anything I'll just make it stage 0. Copper will be the first stage (weakest toolset), followed by bismuth bronze, wrought iron, bronze, black bronze, and red/blue steel. Obviously I'll change this when I figure out the actual tier system. Some of the treasure/material requirements will also probably be changed because, for example, torches only last two days, making them a waste of time. Jack-o-lanterns, however, last either forever or just a lot longer. I don't remember. When I can make metal lanterns, I will. Requiring 64 logs is a lot for TFC considering that that is 4 log piles. And so on. I'll tell you when I change things.
Hopefully this'll be a lot of fun and my posts will be fun to read.
Just came by to show you how my first week has gone.
Stage 0 -Sticks and stones may break my bones, but they're also very useful.
As indicated, I got way too distracted by the idea of gathering sticks and stones for tools to take time to protect my spawn. I'll probably come back to it later and memorialize it, but I have more important things to do first.
The first job I had to take care of was gather enough straw to make some thatch so I could survive my first night without aggravating the neighbors...
The next day, I worked on tracking down some food and copper so I could melt it down into more useful things like a saw or an axe. I found several deposits of the little nuggets of ore and made markers so I can prospect the area for more minerals later.
Over the next few days, I worked on finding a better spot to sit and made my hiding spot a little more comfortable.
Once I was convinced I was safe, I started looking around for a large enough space for a castle. To the north, I found another island with Douglass Fir trees. To the south, I found just what I had been looking for.
Now I can focus on making more tools and starting construction.
Sorry there wasn't a whole lot to say this time. Hopefully the post makes sense. Imgur kind of messed up the ordering of the screenshots this time.
Next time I hope to update with some pictures of a build!
i started playing hardcore with some mods like tough as nails, realistic torches, streams mod and realistic terrain generation. i didnt last too long when a spider killed me. i could've killed the spider but i encountered a lag spike.
i never heard of terrafirmacraft. i guess i will check it out. i love mods that make survival more challenging and realistic.
the first picture is an awesome mountain i found, the second is a village built on a sand dune, the third is my shelter. beside the shelter you can see where i died.

Sooo, I started up a new world for this challenge and tried using a custom seed. Yeah.... THAT didn't work out too well. So, here's how it all went down:
I ended up spawning on a small island with no trees or animals. All that was there were a few clumps of grass here and there. I spawned right on the edge of the island, which means I have to build out onto the water. I turned on host options and flew around the entire world so you could get a look at the map. There were only six to seven tiny islands in the ENTIRE world. And three of them were mushroom biome islands. There were only two trees in the entire world that spawned, and if they didn't drop any saplings, then... Yeah... There also isn't a singe animal in the world, and there is no way I'll be able to craft a bed due to the fact that none of the regular islands are big enough to have animals spawn on them. I was contemplating
going into creative mode to spawn in two of every animal in a pen but I wasn't sure if that would be against the rules or not. I think I'm just going to start a whole new world...

i looked at TFC and it is exactly the mod i need! and soo much more! thanks so much monarch!
No problem! It's amazing but really really difficult. You'll be in the "wood" age for a long time (probably even your first year in-game).
According to the wiki, this is the tier progression system:
copper | wood age
regular/bismuth/black bronze | stone age
wrought iron | iron age
steel | gold age
black/blue/red steel | diamond age
I'm not including stone, because, again, you can't make a full set of tools with it. You can only make an axe, shovel, javelin, hoe, hammer, and knife. It's just there to get you started and somewhere safe to sleep until you can find some copper.
[edit] This is what I'd consider the full tool list to be (tools you use daily that are worth making in better materials):
Axe
Hammer
Hoe
Shovel
Chisel
Prospector's Pick
Pickaxe
Javelin (or, with mods, arrows)
Mace
Sword
With mods, you'd be able to get around having to use the bow at all. I think it's either TerraMisc or Udary that provides more weapons, namely the long and crossbow. I wouldn't recommend making every weapon, because that's a waste of materials on things you'll never use (a no-no in TFC as it's really unforgiving). Just have a melee and ranged. Note: ranged don't work on skellies. Best used for bears and deer. Maybe the occasional creepface.
Once again, good luck!
[edit edit] Also: pray to God you don't spawn in the southern hemisphere. I've never gotten up the balls to try surviving down there, but I imagine starting in winter with very few food sources is not ideal. On the other hand, though, when growing season starts you'll have enough time to plant crops and be able to expect them to grow.
So, yesterday, I completed the Wooden Age and this morning the Stone Age and I'm ready to post some pics.
Wooden Age
http://m.imgur.com/a/n2Cs1
1) Materials requirements (I got the iron armor from a blacksmith)
2) Treasure Requirements (a birch sapling)
3) The spider proofing for the wall (I thought about using fences but this looked better)
4) My last second wheat farm (because I can't read lol)
5 & 6) My animal pens (there was a crap load of pigs so I decided why the heck not)
7) My store/treasure room (I'll make separate rooms in the iron age)
8) My sleeping area
Right now, I can't post pics for the stone age so I will have to get to posting those pics later or tomorrow.
Plop the wheat farm beside a lake or something. It'll help it grow faster.
I'm slowly getting to a point where I can start the wood age.
I want(ed?) to do a let's play and already recorded a first episode, but due to some lasting damage to my voice from a case of laryngitis I had last year, I can't record for as long as I want to (I used to aim for hour-long vids because it's hard to get things done in 30 minutes). Also, it's the beginning of a TFC world and there's a lot of boring stuff happening with tiny snippets of interesting things in the middle. I think I'll just stick to blogging about it (if that's what this is called).
That's why there aren't so many pictures.
Start the post!
So, I started this like any other world: fists full of rocks and sticks and running around finding things and figuring out trees, rock types, water sources, and clay deposits. I made a little thatch hut (use a knife to break grass) and started working on clay vessels and things.
These are called pit kilns and are the only vanilla TFC way to fire clay items. I have another addon installed, though, that adds the ability to make brick kilns (?) that fire more items for less wood. I'll make one later in the game. For now, I've got 5 pits for 5 kilns. Set these off with a fire starter and they'll go for 8 hours, even through rain.
For those that don't know me, I'm a sucker for sunrises, especially in TFC, since it means I've lived through another day.
About a week in, I managed enough copper for my first tools: a saw, a scythe (makes getting saplings easier than using your fist), and a pick. The blue dots are rain, I think.
And the final pic for this post - a vein of exposed copper in a very nope-y area (rocks and dirt slide down, causing cave-ins, causing death). I made some support beams to see if they'd help me. A little over a stack (16) of ore in, it collapsed, I screamed, and noped the **** right out of there and took my beams with me.
I hope you enjoyed that (and I hope my spacing works. Sometimes the line breaks I put in disappear). Next time there will be loads more pictures and hopefully more story. I'm in an area that's sort of like the climate of Wisconsin or Canada - icy water even in summer. I know I'm in the northern hemisphere, though, which means that I've just got a really short growing season.
At least I had the foresight to drop in the Cellars addon... Without it winter would be impossible here.
Thanks, guys!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I don't mean to be unapproachable. I accept critiques and suggestions well, so please, by all means, make as many suggestions as you would like.
Man, that means that I'll have to go mining for Cobblestone... Again... Mostly because I ended up having to expand the wall 20 blocks and that consumed a LOT of Cobblestone... Oh well...
Well, since I'm assuming you're not playing with TFC and you're in the iron age, you can make an iron bucket and use that to make a cobble generator. TFC doesn't have any metal buckets until blue/red steel (end game). I've allowed myself a wood bucket because it's literally just wooden planks and only allows you to move liquids from container to container. Liquid physics don't let you make water wells or anything, so.
[edit] Also: progress is slow, but progress is still progress, so.
We'll start this post with some aesthetically pleasing trees. Equally spaced and roughly the same height. I think I'll keep them here and incorporate them into the design of the castle.
Around the same area I found the protruding copper vein, I found a mixed vein of weird red and yellow stuff. I'm not sure what it does yet. I'll have to get my researchers to look into it.
While I was roaming (again, same area as the copper), I found some male sheep. Now if only I could find some females...
Furthur proof that this area is crawling in copper:
This is a vein of poor quality, but it's still copper.
This is quite unfair:
On the coast:
...and Nope Cavern after a couple collapses:
While walking around one night I got a bit injured. I've heard stories about the ponds that are warm at night, and decided I'd sit in one myself to see if they were true. Amazingly, my health started rising instantly.
A few days after my initial escapade with copper, I decided it was high time I try to cook something. Five or six campfires later and I managed a simple tomato soup (this will fulfill my bread requirement, as bread requires a quern, requiring stone, which isn't allowed yet).
I also started knocking down some more trees after I made myself a scythe (so I can get saplings to replace trees I knock down with faster). I don't have screens of the scythe or chisel I've made yet, but I'll try to get them before the next update. A full log pile is 16 logs. All except one (containing 11, I think) are full.
And this should fulfill the treasure requirement, yes?
I also managed to lead a Mr. and Mrs. Sheep and a Mrs. Pig over to my camp:
Also: screens of the amount of copper I had from that one trip and venison weighing in at a little over 6 lbs (or 97 oz). That should cover the meat requirement, yes?
And there ya have it. Hopefully I'll be able to show a build one day.
Yes, and, coincidentally, there is a large pit of lava neighboring my lake. But, I didn't want a chance of falling into a stream of lava and getting burnt to a crisp.
And I play on an Xbox 360, so I can't play with mods.
am I allowed to collect diamond if i find it?
Pet me, I'm Fluffy!
not until the diamond age.

I never thought of that. The pictures probably won't be as good as if they were screenshots, but it's worth a try.
As for the mods... I don't even know if I'll survive all the mobs, let alone other ways to die jumping around in my face! :'D

I would've put the farm by my neighboring lake, but I wanted everything to be inside the wall. As soon as I can make a bucket, I will upgrade my farm.
So, for the iron age, the wall has to be TWO blocks thick? Well, crap.
