Probably not a good idea considering that water is one of easiest ways to transfer radiation and all surface water is contaminated, contact with it is likely deadly. Darker glass reduces light passing trough it and is better for underwater base because it will get warmer than white glass as it absorbs more photons.

After a long long life, you find out that infinity is really not all that long.
this sounds like an awesome challenge, and very few of the many challenges appeal to me. for anyone who wants it to be more realistic or challenging, I would recommend the mystcraft mod. I won't explain the entirety of the mod, but you make books to create new custom or random dimensions. It would be easy to make a downloadable map that starts the player near a portal to a "post apocalyptic" wasteland, using these books. I found several dimensions with a poison sun/poison rain, with varying degrees of constant debuffs when outside (slowness I-III and/or weakness I-III and/or poison I-IV, and rarely nausea). I don't know how to make it safe only at night, as these debuffs are constant in every wasteland dimension I have found, but i'm sure there is a way. (also there is a difference between corrupted dimensions and wasteland dimensions as there are several types of corruption blocks that spread and you must find a wasteland dim. without the corruption. and there are ways to write custom dimension books to guarantee this outcome.) I use regen beacons and health pots to stay on the surface for extended periods. Anyway, just an idea for anyone looking for a bit more of a challenge. sorry if this is off topic.

This was a cool challenge to stumble upon, thought it would be appropriate to prepare for the real world apocalypse with this old school minecraft challenge.
when you use the escape route to beat the challenge I think the minimum should be 1000 block to make it more intresting
For mine I actually made a nuclear crater.

Cool challenge even tough i dont inderstand the part of decontamination since didnt you need to build tye machine???
My guess is that it’s like a 10 min (1 Minecraft day) grace period or at least that’s how I’ve done these things in the past
