Kinda new to war multiplayer, so all my theories are purely guesses. Distance... I guess it depends on your fighting style, and if you're attacking or defending. If you're defending, you want to wait for the other team to get close to your castle, but not too close. They should be close enough to you so that you can gather their materials. As Sun Tzu wrote, 1 of the enemy's anything is worth 15 of yours. Ok, so maybe he didn't write that exactly, but you get the picture. Distance from spawn, depends on the server I guess...
Couldn't they just destroy the dirt blocks adjacent to the slowsand to get out?
Also could you make it so that destroying the pillars sends lava as well?

Originally, yes, but not the design shown in the video, I improved that one. The dirt adjacent to the slowsand has pressure plates under it. Unless they pick up the dirt block, it will fall into a pressure plate and detonate the TNT underneath. There were 5 tnt in a cross shape all with pressure plates. Sorry if it was unclear XD.
Optimal distance depends on your gear and your enemy. If you're enemy is full of the best engineers in MC but very little fighters and you have plenty of swords, armor, bows ETC. get in close and smash 'em quick- TNT cannons and hyperdrive (A machine made by Ethos that can cover about 70 blocks a second) are useless at short range, and most little indoors traps can be avoided by good warriors. The likewise is true- If you have few swords and bows, but lots of heavy weapons I.E. Cannons, Hyperdrive, EATS, and other such mechanisms you should back up, because TNT cannons can destroy armies before they're close enough to fight you with arrows, EATS will be a simple and fast way of making you're troops "Fluid" (My term for the ease of which soliders can move to another battlefield/base. Engineers are very solid because they're gear can't move so it has to be rebuilt which takes a lot of time. Archers are very fluid because they can get anywhere very quickly, and bows take almost no setting up- It almost doesn't matter where you keep your archers, with a good travel system A.K.A EATS or a railroad (Which isn't as good for security and ease of use reasons)), and Hyperdrive can send swordsmen behind the battlefield in around a second. These are all long-range boosts, so moving back can give you the advantage.
Every distance is optimal, if you have all the gear and the worst enemies in the world. No distance is optimal, if you have no gear against the best enemies in the world. But you'll always have some gear, but not all kinds, and enemies that are good in same ways, and bad in others. Change distance accordingly.
Tl;dr High tech? Move back. Low tech? Move forward.

@Conundrumer
In terms of Real Time combat techniques, they have NOT been discussed at length in this thread, only for the reason that this thread was originally written before PvP was even possible in Minecraft. I agree that it is indeed high time to start talking in REAL TIME. I dig this idea, and should have thought of it sooner.
It's one of the most practical forms of warfare, besides using basic FPS techniques (taking cover, attacking from behind, etc). Armed with several stacks of sand/dirt and no armor, I took on people equipped with diamond swords and full iron armor.
Unfortunately, I never won ):
I'm pretty surprised I don't see many other people discussing the possibilities of real time building tactics.

Oh, and Conun, the reason why people don't discuss that is...I have no idea.
The reason I specifically don't like it is because it makes no sense. Obviously, that's sort of the gimmick with minecraft, but it seems like there should be some sort of building time...So you can't just run around dumping obsidian blocks everywhere in a battle...

Oh, I get it, like the spoungebob episode that had the box.
The only problem with your mob-spawner logic is that you need a vast amount of grass to gain an industrial amount of seeds in the first place because grown wheat doesn't always yield.
hyperdrive (A machine made by Ethos that can cover about 70 blocks a second)
What's that ? I can't manage to find any videos or posts about it.

this is why you should clear trees around your castle:
While on the topic of optimal distance, why not have a secret subway system that brings your troops from spawn to your base. You could protect your base from enemies using it be creating substations along the way where people have to choose to switch to the right line or else they would end up in some death trap. If any trap where activated, the whole system would blow. Heck, if you time everything right, you could build a subway system right to your enemies base from spawn, basically allowing for infinite troops. Of course, we are talking thing on the scale of 4,000 iron to link a base 10,000 blocks away from spawn in the straight line (curvy tracks are better because the enemy won't know the straight line to your base). But you could set up and remove the system depending on when it is needed.

Good point. IMO practical Minecraft warfare should be implemented realistically, with enforced rules of engagement. Making it so you can't pick through fortress walls (sappers and TNT will do), dirt pillar over them (siege ladders? alright) and doing away with silliness in general would add much more to the overall experience of armed conflict in Minecraft.
This of course requires maturity, for not everyone will honor such limitations.
Touching on travel times, I think having teleportation points in a faction's primary base of operations would be completely feasible. This is assuming that, once again, participants have the maturity to not TP into an enemy's main for some stupid "infiltration attack".
Using boat teleportation is faster than a pig on ice. It's where you lay boats down 3 blocks apart from each other then you sit in one, aim at the next and hold down right click.
If somebody had an autoclicker, they could cover (100 clicks per second x 3 block per click) = 300 blocks per second.
The slow part is digging the ditches to put the boats in and placing the boats.
But hey, 300 blocks per second is worth it, right? (as fast as hyperdrive, but you only need stacks of wood)
Boat = 5 planks
Log = 4 planks
5 Logs = 4 Boats = 12 Blocks in less time than it takes for a golden shovel to dig dirt.
Boat

Sadly, these guys have two disadvantages-
A. Spies (So easy to infiltrate! Gentlemen.)
B. Heavy Weapons (Cannons.)
C. Require setting up. (Then again only Boats and Hyperdrive don't- Hyperdrive only requires a entrance. And it's the stealthiest form of travel possible, assuming your enemies don't have spies or scouts.)
D. Unavailability. (Not everyone has autoclick.)
Also VMaximus, Spies are not Scouts. Scouts hide and observe, using camouflage. Spies have a very different skin- A clan skin. The skin of your enemy. They backstab and sabotage from the inside- Out. They are the second least fluid troops, besides Engineers. (I mean seriously, killing an enemy from behind with a golden sword without being discovered before and after (So you can do it again) slaughtering someone has to be difficult and require some planning. Not even the person being backstabbed can know who backstabbed him. And spies can provide you EXTREME amounts of EXTREMELY reliable intelligence. (Unlike scouts).
Sadly, skilled spies are pretty rare to come by. Every once and a while a good general will pick up one... with some effort. But they must be used wisely, if you want to continue using them. Then again they are the least likely troops to actually LISTEN to your orders, usually, which is another issue.

The same technique can be used for vertical transportation, providing easy access to aerial TNT attacks.
I'm into speed slightly more than stealth, and a lot more than strength.
