Our double spawner gens XP really fast. We lit up almost all the mineshafts around the spawner (I think there are a few tunnels left that we missed), so zombies and skeletons spawn pretty quickly. I stink at fighting mobs, so a grinder is faster for me. My son on the other hand, jumps around and attacks mobs like crazy at night, so he gets XP fast at night.
The good thing about a mob spawner, especially zombie or skeleton, is getting the drops, including the enchanted ones.
Spawners suck as source of xp. A spawner will produce 4 mobs then pause for 10-40 seconds. So on average 25 sec. Means average rate of mob delivery is roughly one per 6 seconds. Out and about at night, mobs spawn rapidly. Can kill way fster
A farm based on a spawner block. A large multilevel darkroom spawner is way faster than field killing. But if using version 14+, I hear it messes up this design.
I just noticed something that is weird, I'm getting XP faster when I kill mobs away from the spawner, especially at night time.
In the other side, why is it taking too long?

So, in conclusion, killing mobs in the battlefield is better than a mob spawner farm.
