Hello, I am new here so idk if I'm posting in the right section or if we're allowed to link videos. I however need some tips on how to improve my house, It isn't 100% finished as I've been concentrating on the basement. My house currently is quite boring, small and plain. I don't know what to do with the rooms, what to put on the outside and just how to make it look more homely.
Here is a quick 1 minute tour of my home as i thought a video would be better than an image:
Also ignore the random piles of dirt. Two villagers spawned near my home so I'm trying to keep them safe.
1)Use smaller room-sized shapes when planning your house. Just drawing a square/rectangle around the outside and then filling in the rooms will end up being quite limiting because you are more likely to end up with too little space than too much and making adjustments after the house is built is a lot harder to work with.
2)flat walls are ugly walls. That doesn't mean you can't have flat walls, but when placing rooms consider shifting them in and out relative to your base footprint. This will create bump-outs and bump-ins that you can place decorations in later. How far in our out you shift them will be something you can decide on a case-by-case basis as it will largely come down to personal taste and your vision of what your house would look like. Additionally, this can apply to just certain parts of a room...for example, your living room window could be a bay window that bumps out from the generally flat wall.
3)don't be shy about using real-world inspirations for concepts. You most likely live in a house in a neighborhood full of other houses, and your neighborhood in turn is crammed into a whole city/county of neighborhoods. Take a walk/drive around some of them and note the different little features of the walls (best to do this in situations you won't raise any suspicions, or else ask for permission to do so first...people are generally nice and accommodating but usually not to complete strangers or people who have bad reputations associated with them). Even in a major city/downtown area full of skyscrapers will probably have all sorts of concept ideas for you to take notice of even though the buildings might look flatter.
4)Try to account for decorational space as well as functional (ie, redstone) space. Lots of times, your mode of thinking will be more along the lines of where the "furniture" would go and the building could very well look quite nice in this undecorated state but then when you go to add decoration you realize there's not really any room for it. This goes hand in hand with #2. A nice rule of thumb is to include 2-3 extra blocks of space since everything has to take up at least 1 block space.
5)keep an open mind regarding block/color palette. Feel free to really like or dislike something, but if you're unsure of a particular combo try building a small section and let it sit a while. Sometimes you will realize that you were only liking/disliking it because it was too new for you.
Anyway, I copied part of your house's exterior and tried improve it by adding some outside decoration (Only using resources that I know you have at hand),
I'm not sure this is any better but I tried my best.
I'd like to have added another floor just so I could fit in a triangular roof, but that would've been a huge change to the house.
AstralMagic, your version looks fantastic! You are very talented. The recommendation to watch the video by Grian is great advice. Grian has very many great videos on how to build interesting homes. The advice by DuhDerp is spot on as well.
Of course I will keep you updated. Right now, i'm in the middle of building a small barn and then I will get back to my house. I'm currently thinking of extending it but I'm not quite sure where/how.

Here's a YouTube video that might help.

That looks amazing!! I love the natural look to it. I'd also look into adding another floor into my house
Thanks, you two. I kept thinking maybe it wasn't very good.
Keep us updated bru_no! I'd really like to see what you end up doing with your house.
