I found an NPC village near my spawn, not very big, just a few buildings and about four doors. I wanted iron golems, so I spent a few days and nights building new houses for the villagers. Everything seemed fine, they were opening doors and going in and out of the houses sometimes before I even finished building, but then something happened -- one morning I heard a zombie pounding on a door long after the sun had come up. Turns out he was inside the house. I let him out and killed him, then continued on with my building project. The next night I didn't hear any doors -- no zombies pounding, and no villagers shutting themselves in for the night, either. When it was daytime again, I had myself a look around, and all the villagers were gone. I can't say how many there were before, but I know it was at least three, maybe four. Now there's none. Could I have run them off by my presence (building the houses "wrong" somehow)? I did cut holes for some additional doors in the buildings that were already there, could that have done it? Or were they simply killed by the zombies and other hostiles that come out at night? And now that they're gone, and I have this empty village, will it cause more of them to spawn or do I have to find another village and "transplant" two so they'll start breeding?
No I've got it set to normal. This is my first Minecraft world (well, first one I've kept for more than a few minutes, anyway) so I'm not ready for hard yet.
[Edit]: and now that they're gone, however it happened, what do I do about it? Do I have to find another village to transplant (I've filled in an entire map around my spawn area and there were no others) or will they respawn since the village is still there?
No they still bang on the doors in normal, they just don't break them down.
Well the villagers won't respawn they only rebreed if theres 2 left so you would have to transplant some from another village or cheat and spawn some in to repopulate your village but make sure they didn't just fell in a 2 deep hole/cave around and got stuck
I want to keep this world legit, so I guess I'm left with searching for another village.
I would strongly suggest to block atleast 2 villagers in a lit area in so they can't be killed and be the worst case breeding pair
That's a good idea. Maybe I'll dig out a basement in one of the houses. Will they open iron doors if they're button-operated, or would that work to keep them penned in?

No, they either got eaten by zombies, noclipped into the walls and suffocated, somehow despawned upon world reloading, or just ran into a cave and never came back
Unless I don't care about a village I find, one of the first thing I do is run around putting lights in all the houses and fixing up things so the villagers can get inside... Then I'll typically wait for night and once they're all inside, I'll put some blocks in front of the doors so they can't get out and nothing can get in... When I have the time, I'll go back and light up all the area around it and fence it off so mobs can't get to it. At that point you can let them all out and start expanding so they breed... If you don't do all of that, then they'll end up getting killed off by zombies or wander off into the wilderness... There's a limit to how far away they can be before they see a door and head back to the village.
I bet it was the lighting thing. I thought I had that house lit up when I built it but I can't be 100% sure on that and there's no other explanation for the zombie being inside with the doors shut. I also found a skeleton where he didn't belong, but that one was dark. I have everything lit up now, of course, now that it doesn't matter. But however it happened, the villagers are gone, I've checked the surrounding area and there are no pits or anything, except for the open lava pool. I guess there's nothing for it but to level the place and find somewhere else to farm my iron?
I also just got this problem, but I don't think it has with any zombie or other aggressive mob to do. Neither the lighting. I have a local server, but on hard difficulty, that I play on and were living in a medium sized village with around 6-8 villagers. I am very strict with lighting and I rarely had problems with zombie raids, and I lived there for quite some time. But one day I were exploring and found another village not too far away and was very happy about this. So then after I had lighten up that one and felt that I could leave it to get back to my original village, I got back and all of the villagers were gone.
The question is if maybe you can't be away for too long? but it's strange as I've been before..
Maybe you can only have one village with inhabitants per world? But never heard of that and doesn't feel right.
The only conclusion I can think of is that it had to be a bug?
I want to keep this world legit, so I guess I'm left with searching for another village.
I also want to keep it legit, but if this is a bug, it's already not legit cause of that.. So according to me you should use like a spawn egg for two villagers to just get it started again and work your way from there. I mean if you really like your village and if this is a bug, my opinion is that you're allowed to do this.
I have seen this happen before the villagers are just idiots so they walk out the door when the zombies are still out. But im a bit confused with why the zombies are out when the sun is out. Anyway the zombies bite the villagers and they turn into zombies so there you have it. Btw sorry i dont have any advice on how to get them all back.

It's cool, I initially posted this over a year ago. Since then, I've actually become quite the expert on villages and their inhabitants. Plus, repopulating an abandoned village is easier than ever, now that you can just cure zombie villagers and don't actually have to go out and find another village (I did, though. Before there were such things as zombie villagers, I found another village and made a minecart track to cover the 2,000 blocks distance between them, so I could repopulate the first one.)
lol dude he wrote that thread xD but IronMagus u probabaly did not have enough lighting int the village they will respawn.... i think
i dont think alot of people are gonna get that face xD
Wow, people! It was a joke! Do you just not understand the use of smileys? Generally they indicate the mood of the writer which may not be obvious in the text. Of course I know it was written by the author. *sigh* And, unfortunately, my point that it was a joke wound up on the next page so no one can see my response that I get it... Oh, well. *sigh again*

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Umm...who do you think wrote that? Like I said, I've become somewhat of an expert in the year-plus since I first posted this.
