Anyone have an idea how often an auto-flush mushroom farm should cycle? I have a rotary clock system set for the 7.5 minute maximum and most times don't have any harvest on the cycles. If I turn off the auto system it builds to the max of 5 per unit eventually but I'm not sure about how I can set timing to max yield.
Already started a multiplier clock for very long cycles, but trial-and-error could take a long time to zero in.
Mushrooms spread quite slowly, with an average of one growth attempt every 28 minutes and a relatively high failure rate per attempt due to not picking a valid location, as described here; it probably takes hours to reach the maximum of 5 mushrooms within an area (this can be tested by setting randomTickSpeed to a higher value (180 would be equivalent to 1 hour per minute of real time) and seeing how long it takes for one mushroom to spread over multiple tests). You'd want to aim for at least several mushrooms per harvest to maximize efficiency since as more grow there will be more chances for spreading (partly offset by attempts at placing mushrooms where there already is one, and eventually, reaching the cap, which will happen earlier than average in some cases).
I like the idea of the daylight sensor and figure I can even tie it into a counter circuit where I can actually set flush after a counted number of days.
I figure tha most reasonable timing would actually be 2 or maybe 3 mushrooms per unit farm area per cycle as max of 4 (5 minus remaining seed) would probably be far past the point of diminished returns.

And do you have a general idea how long it takes to get close to the maximum?
Intuitively 7.5 minutes sounds seldom enough that you wouldn't lose too much grow time to the flushing but it would certainly be some.
How about going with a daylight sensor and flushing once a day?

The Wiki tutorial on mushroom farming uses a daylight sensor to flush for 12 seconds once a day.
If you have a source of bonemeal then farming huge mushrooms is quick and easy, though not automatic.
So autofarming small mushrooms may win out in the long run.
