True, but its certainly not the only item like that.
Feathers are only useful for making arrows, and there is more than one way to make them! If you think of it that way, feathers are far more useless than slimeballs.
Leather is only useful for making the worst armor in the game.
Milk is only one of many ingredients for cake, and has no other purpose. Eggs is the same way.
Even gunpowder!
Actually, the egg thing isn't entirely true. Eggs will rarely spawn chickens when thrown, thus being excellent for creating a chicken farm. But then you just get eggs, so its kind of a giant circle of cake.
Since slimes tend to gather in the corners for some reason, you could also just put the plates in the corners only.
Is this a confirmed and reliable behavior? I have seen them in the corners a couple times, but can anyone back this up with proof, preferably some code, or something that shows that they go in corners?
It's just an observed behavior. Every time I go into my slime farm, most of the slimes are in the corners of the room and all but 1 or 2 are up against the walls on the short ends.

Trunkz, the guy who made the slime chunk program, said that when they aren't tracking an enemy, they don't change direction, so they end up in a wall, and eventually slide into a corner. I can't prove it, and I certainly don't have code, but my observations showed this to be the case many dozens of times.
First of all, great post, thank you so much for the details put here. I’ve found myself a three chunk of slime spawning too on my MSP server, and spent pretty much the whole day yesterday digging it up, with an extra fourth block on the side.
Currently this is following all the rules that I have found – in a slime spawning zone (according to the mod), below lvl 16 (currently 6 block high room), completely lit up with glowstone, and I have even blocked up nearby caves to increase spawn chances within my farm.
During the whole time mining the farm up, not a single slime spawned. Now I see on the forum that other members have had up to 100 slimeballs just during the farming, so this is worrying me. And now I am waiting (longuest thus far has been around 15 minutes) at about 30 blocks away, and no spawns. I am currently on Normal difficulty and have been the whole time. (I tried switching to passive and then back to normal in case that played around with spawn rate but being on an MSP server I doubt this has any effect ?).
So far I have not done multiple floors – I would be happy with just one floor as long as they start spawning, and I appreciate being patient, however reading about some of you who have had so many slimes appear just during the construction of the farm, I am a little worried.
I will post pictures tonight, maybe I am missing something, but so far I do not seem to have a lot of luck. Will need to make a proper long test of waiting further away and leaving it on for an hour or something to make sure.
Any hints and tips would be great :smile.gif:
Make multiple 2 high floors like his blueprints, I made a 16x32x6 room at bedrock in elligible chunks and never got a single spawn, but I added a bunch of 2 high rooms and now i have 4 stacks, in addition to the 2 stacks of sticky pistons I have used in my piston elevators
OK, wait. So you find slime-eligible chunks just by digging out random tunnels near bedrock? Thats it? Won't that be really annoying? And what if they spawn? How will you know that slimes can only spawn on this block to this block? The farm part I can do, but the finding of slime chucks, not so easily.
